Nicholas Smith, bestselling author of the Extinction Cycle series, has hit a home run with the “Trackers” series of four books.“Trackers” is a refreshingly new and realistic series in the post-apocalyptic genre in that it does not rely on zombies or a worldwide plague to drive the story line and in doing so, it exposes the vulnerabilities of modern America to an EMP attack. Given recent events, this attack by North Korea is plausible and should give our elected officials cause for concern. Trackers also exposes the dark, underbelly of violence in America. The renown Dr. Arthur Bradley, author of many survivalist books, provides a sober scene-setter in his foreword.Much of the action takes place in Colorado after a highly plausible North Korean EMP attack that paralyzes most of the continental United States followed by a nuclear attack on Washington, D.C. “Trackers” includes the chaotic and savage scene of a struggle for survival in small towns and large cities. The characters are complex and fully-developed with personal strengths and weaknesses, warts and all, of the sort you expect to find in people at all levels. The theme of “leave no man behind” is prevalent always, sometimes to the detriment of the greater good. The action is fast-paced but totally believable with several unexpected plot twists. The author employs great foreshadowing on several occasions. Nicholas Smith shows intimate knowledge as to what essential services are required in times of crisis, and the main characters demonstrate that public safety continues to be the prime mission of government no matter what the circumstances. Not only must the local law enforcement officers deal with the chaos caused by the EMP attack, they also must deal with militias, organized crime, and street gangs.Nick absolutely nails the intensity of combat. As a Vietnam veteran, reading Trackers caused a flashback to a terrible dark night in Vietnam when I was the only America for miles around with about 100 Montagnards fighting off an enemy bent on our destruction. Although the fighting was not hand-to-hand, it was close enough, and I was thankful to be alive when the smoke cleared the next morning. I still have a VC flag we pulled off the wire, but that is another story.Unlike some novels, “Trackers” leaves the reader with a sense of completion. The Epilogue is an awesome wrap-up to the series. As Raven, one of the main characters, reflects on his fallen comrades, “He wasn’t thinking about how they had died - he was thinking about how they had lived: Honorable, brave, and selfless.” I think about my classmates who died in Vietnam every day. I mourn their loss but give praise and thanks for their example of selfless service to our country. I have pledged myself to live my life in such a way to honor their sacrifice.Although a work of fiction, the threat from North Korea is real. The “Tracker” series serves to inform and prepare us for the unthinkable. The “Trackers” series is destined to become the jewel in the crown of post-apocalyptic mystery-thrillers.

When I find a product I believe in, I shill like there's no tomorrow. It's a good day when I stumble across a new good writer. On a whim, I purchased Nicholas Sansbury Smith's collected bundle of his Trackers series, which was available for download on the cheap. If your jam is grid-down, post-apocalyptic reads, you should be all over this.Me, I've been on a months-long rag, binge-reading post-apocalyptic survival novels. I've read some great ones, some okay ones, some crap ones. The Trackers series, all four books, falls in the top shelf category. Crazy thing is, when written as well as this, you're filled with the sense that this stuff could actually happen. And, sometimes, the writing's so convincing that you start thinking in terms of not "actually could happen" but, rather, "it's a matter of when." Like the best post-apocalyptic survival reads, Trackers makes me want to go out and start stocking up and buy generators and look into homesteading and read up on canning and building Faraday cages and such.Story's set in the quaint tourist mountain town of Estes Park, Colorado, of which claim to fame is its notorious Stanley Hotel, inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in The Shining and the location shoot as Hotel Danbury in Dumb and Dumber. And what I've figured out is if a massive EMP takes out the nation's electrical grid, it's best to not be in the city. Would rather be in a rural area.It helps that the author not only seems to know what he's talking about with these doomsday scenarios, he's savvy with character writing. The folks he introduces are easy to root for, whether it's the police chief or the nurse or the senator lady who used to be a combat pilot. The most showy character is Sam "Raven" Spears, the troubled half-breed and ex-marine who sometimes reluctantly helps out the police chief when a tracker is required. It's thru Raven that the author incorporates these pretty neat elements of Native American folklore, of which my favorites are the myths of Shunka Sapa and the creepy water cannibals. The dope thing about binge-reading is that you can just go from one book to the next. With Trackers, there isn't a weak link. All four books are hard-hitting, well-paced, and character driven. Not everyone makes it out alive, so be careful who you get invested in.Extreme saber rattling. A battered America. A government nearly obliterated. No power. Supplies dwindling. Estes Park - with its 10,000 inhabitants, including tourists - becomes a microcosm of the unspeakable horrors taking place across the nation. I got caught up in the pulse-pounding action, and the last ditch heroics, and in a town's struggle to survive as the townspeople are theatened with street gangs, neo-Nazis, serial killers, and cowards and politicos from within. I love it that the author finds spots to weave in the occasional plot swerve. To me, the most surprising turn is the help that comes from an unexpected ally - that most of us would assume is an enemy - and how that turns out. Very well done. There's only one thing that really bugged me in this series. In the second book, Colton was demoted as police chief. Yet, in the third book, he's back to being police chief. I went thru much of that third book feeling salty about such an egregious lapse in continuity, and, when it finally does get addressed, it's only this passing mention. Grrr. But, hey, that's my only nag.I wouldn't at all mind a movie treatment. Or a mini-series if it's on cable or Netflix. I'd love Colton, Detective Lindsey Plymouth, Charlize, and Nathan breathed life by good actors. Mostly, I want to see Raven onscreen, with his swagger and bad attitude and his twin hatchets and his loyal white Akita dog, Creek. Anyway, Trackers was such a great read, it's convinced me to dive into the author's Extinction Cycle series. Bar's set high.

I purchased all four of these books when they were released and I loved reading all of them. They are an intense series of stories about a post apocalyptic United States after an EMP attack from North Korea. Americans find out that sometimes your worst enemies may even be your next door neighbors and domestic terrorists. The series features a great set of characters and villains and the story just keeps you turning the pages with intense action and disaster. You root for your heroes to survive and to try to recoup some of the sanity that America had before the war.Nicholas Sansbury Smith is an outstanding author and I like all of his books. He has a good writing style and a practical experience in the ability to use his past work experience to bring the story alive. It is the great detail that he writes with as well as the ability to imagine all of the possibilities of such a war that makes these stories great!I highly recommend this series and the price for all four books is a real steal.

I use this book (actually the older version) for a class I teach on laboratory management. Each week the students read a chapter, write 2 pages on their thoughts about what it means to them (not a book report) and then we discuss in class and work through the exercises in small groups. Negotiations, we do a couple of cases back and forth. The results are very good, with multiple students realizing the importance of self awareness etc. It helps to actually work in small groups and use this book with each other, using the feeling words etc. Then when the real life scenario comes up, they are more prepared with a better response.

Innovators are great at innovating. But, in business or academics they are also often expected to be managers, teachers, mentors or even leaders. These are not areas of natural interest to many innovators and, as a consequence, they do not succeed and their organizations suffer as a result. Carl Cohen leads the reader through the challenges often faced by these innovators and provides wonderful insights into how to help them and their organizations be more successful. This is essential reading for any enterprise where innovation matters.

Great item! 10/10

The authors did a good job compiling ideas that are helpful for scientists at all levels. It has several techniques for effectively managing meetings, dealing with one's research group, etc. The book provides proven management techniques to be used in different situations. There are few points that I found disagreeable. Throughout the book, the authors portrayed researchers with Asian names as bad examples or victims. In addition, the book is not gender-neutral. Finally, some of the ideas such as to ignore abusive comments and put-downs by others in a meeting and instead focus on the task to accomplish may work in many professions, but I doubt how many scientists will buy that.

This is a quite remarkable bio of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. One remarkable aspect is the mere size of the book--nearly 700 pages of text and notes. And this is important, because the author can go into very extensive detail on whatever facet of RBG's life is under examination. So often books on the Justice zip through her important cases as a litigator in an almost superficial manner. Not here; the author analyzes what gave rise to each case, what Ginsburg's strategy was, how she designed her briefs and oral arguments, and how the Justices reacted to her presentations. It is almost like looking over her shoulder as the cases unfold. In addition the book is remarkable because it also constitutes a feminist legal history of the 1970's to the present. This is because RBG made so much of that history herself before she became a judge on the D.C. Circuit and Justice on the Supreme Court. The author is a distinguished emerita professor of history at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she concentrates on feminist legal history, Gender Issues, and Women's History. So the reader really gets a very helpful dose of these subjects as the biography unfolds. Finally, the book is somewhat unique in emphasizing the key role in Ginsburg's development of values and perspectives from her growing up Jewish in Brooklyn, which shaped her entire life.Several other aspects also stand out. The author's treatment of RBG's period as head of the ACLU's Women's Rights Project, while a Columbia law professor, demonstrates Ginsburg as the master strategist, figuring in what order test cases should be litigated to develop the most impact. Unlike Thurgood Marshall when he was litigating for the NAACP, and was the big kahuna who directed most of the cases, RGB had a range of other groups and litigators whom she had to try and coordinate into a meaningful strategy. The book also demonstrates how campaigns are organized to secure Court of Appeals and Supreme Court nominations. This discussion highlights the happy relationship Ginsburg had with her tax-expert spouse Marty (as we in DC referred to him), who participated in gaining particularly the Clinton Supreme Court nomination for her.The author (a non-lawyer) does a solid job on looking at Ginsburg's work as a judge. I must say though that RBG's 13 years on the DC Circuit are not in my opinion sufficiently developed, with the exception of the role she played in bringing both the liberal and republican factions together despite their deep divisions. The author does a much grander job on her Supreme Court decisions. Particularly outstanding is her discussion of the Virginia Military Institute case which probes every aspect. Intra-court dynamics are also examined during both the Rehnquist and Roberts courts. A number of key cases are examined, including the Violence Against Women Act case, Bush v. Gore, the Voting Rights Act litigation, and the impact of the Ledbetter dissent which produced Congressional legislation. The important interplay between affirmative action and Ginsburg's perpetual unsuccessful efforts to get the Court to adopt a strict standard under the equal protection clause in sex discrimination cases was something the author illuminates which I had not been aware of.The author wraps up with the 2016 term, by which point Ginsburg is the senior associate justice and the leader of the opposition to the conservative majority on the Court. The challenges posed by the Trump administration as regards immigration, as well as the Gorsuch appointment mean that RBG can never relax her vigilance to do what she feels is right. At 84, it is apparent her many years of service have at times been exhausting, but she always bounces back. Let's hope that continues. An outstanding effort and essential resource for anyone interested in Ginsburg or the Supreme Court. 110 pages of notes support the text and are extremely detailed; read them along with the discussion to which they refer. Also, 93 excellent photos are sprinkled throughout the text adding insight. The bibliography contains references to author interviews, archival sources, case summaries and journal articles and books. And once again Knopf has turned to Berryville Graphics in Virginia to do their usual outstanding job in printing the book. A winning achievement all around.

I should have researched this biography enough to learn that it is "Unauthorized" . The author has minimal insight into her subject -- Ruth Nader Ginsburg -- and gives to the reader a work more akin to hero worship than serious analysis of the private person; instead it reads like one list of admirable accomplishment. Yes, RBG is admirable; a legend of of the best in American jurisprudence, rendering and writing thoughtful, measured, decisions and dissents without "legislating from the bench." Her intelligence, education, common sense, political impartiality, and wisdom are the traits I would hope to find in every Supreme Court Justice. Sadly, we are living in a new and very different era than when she came of age. That being said, no one is perfect. And the author paints a picture of a perfect person. Surely, at some point in her life, Ginsburg disappointed her parents, fought with her husband, embarrassed or hurt the feelings of children, had an argument with a friend, lost her temper? She is, after all, a human being. But we get no information of that kind which would help to draw a picture of Ginsburg as full person. A good biographer explores her subject's flaws as well as her merits. The author does an admirable job of detailing the chronology of Ginsburg's life and accomplishments, though too often using over long and complicated sentence structure; sometimes a single sentence may include five or six indepent and dependent clauses; she rarely makes use of a semi-colon. Reading this work was slog for me. I finished the book for the information it contained, not because I derived any pleasure from its prose. Three Stars

An excellent book! Beginning with her childhood and the tragic death of her mother, this book traces the development of RBG's pursuit of equality and justice. Her early experiences and the guidance of her mother to be more than what was expected of a young Jewish girl established the precedents that would lead the future Justice to a life dedicated to seeing that all people, regardless of race, class, or gender, received equal treatment under the law. This book takes us through her early years, the challenges she faced in college and her pursuit of a career, through her days with the ACLU, and, eventually, to the Supreme Court. Detailed, well-researched, and worth your time.

This definitive work about a truly great woman was the highlight of my weekend. It is a well-researched, well-written book about a pioneer of women's law and a great asset to the Supreme Court.

Compelling page turner would not be the usual description of a biography of a Supreme Court Justice. The description fits this one. This comprehensive biography of Justice Ginsburg is a perfect blending of social history and constitutional law. Jane Sherron De Hart's writing is as eloquent as the Justice's opinions and her riveting background narratives of several of the justice's cases and opinions are a treasure chest of "fly on the wall" history that the average person could never know without months of arduous, adroit research. This is the perfect book to read with so much at stake in the upcoming elections.

This is a captivating biography of one of the greatest women of our time. De Hart’s meticulous research sheds light on the many experiences of RBGs life and work, which helped to shape her into the national treasure she is today. While the books is long, the subject is beyond fascinating and well researched. Mostly importantly, the writing is beautifully crafted and well thought out. It is honestly hard to put down.

I first heard about Undone from my wife. She is a friend of the author, Michele Cushatt, having attended college with her and now being Facebook friends. I wasn’t planning to read the book because I put it in the category of a “chick book.” I know there are movies that guys refer to as “chick flicks” so I kind of put this memoir into that category – a book for women written by a women. My wife started reading it and kept talking about how much she enjoyed it, so I decided to get a copy. I’m glad I did.The subtitle of the book is “a story of making peace with an unexpected life.” Not only is Cushatt a gifted writer (she has a way with words), but part of her story had similarities to where my wife and I have been. She writes about the pain of divorce, an ongoing battle with cancer and managing a family with a biological child, two step-sons and three foster children. While I have never struggled with cancer, I related to enduring divorce and experiencing blended families and adoption.Cushatt writes with an honesty that keeps the reader turning the pages. She shares the lessons she’s learned, the struggles she has add and how she handled adversity – including the good, bad and ugly.I appreciated her humor that is sprinkled throughout her book. In discussing her diagnosis of cancer and the responses she received from people. This example reveals her sense of humor and she related this response from one person – “And my personal favorite: ‘My friend was diagnosed with the same kind of cancer as you. He died a few months ago.’ Thank you. Super helpful.” Now that’s funny! This is potentially my favorite quote of the book from a powerful chapter. In chapter 16 she tells about going to Christmas Eve service with her three “littles.” You have to read the chapter to appreciate all that is going on, but as she brings the story to an end, she writes these words that she shared with a friend: “Just because something is hard doesn’t mean we’re not called to it. And just because it’s hard doesn’t mean it’s not good.”Undone was a compelling read and as I read it, I know the Cushatt’s story is not over. If your life has ever taken an unexpected twist, you will appreciate the words this book contains.

An unexpected life. Isn’t that what all of us live? As a young girl I had many dreams and even more plans. Unexpected is the perfect description of what my life has been and something tells me you would probably say the same thing. As we grow up we dream of the perfect husband, house and number of kids the key is what we do when life turns out nothing like or even only partly like our dream. Michele Cushatt’s latest book Undone is an amazingly written memoir of her unexpected life.I am an avid reader but I have to say I cannot remember the last time I read a book which impacted my heart and mind as much as Undone.Michele’s vulnerability and transparency is an amazing blessing. She not only tells of the events of her unexpected life but shares her heart of both struggle and expectance through it. Her ability to show God’s hand and will in the middle of the mess is just what my heart needed. It was a blessing to hear of how Michele struggled through an unwanted divorce, the blessing of a remarriage at the same to the challenges of step parenting, blending a family, battling cancer and adopting 3 high needs children. None of these events were her dream but through the journey of her life she sees how they were God’s plan for her.Michele reminds us that in the thick of life we have to remember that God is good. He is there with us. He can see what we can not and He calls us to trust Him. Learning to take a step back and see the big picture is an awesome gift which will encourage our heart like so few other things will.In the final pages of her book I find one of my favorite quotes:“I’m undone. Hungry, questioning, searching, struggling. Not even close to polished and pristine. But I’m breathing. And believing. And loving this crazy, unexpected, and imperfect life.”Is not this the words of all of our hearts?Undone is a MUST read! I know it will bless, encourage, challenge and infuse hope in your heart as it did mine.Rayna NeisesHeart CoachTake Heart Coachingwww.TakeHeartTransitions.com

This book was recommended to me by a friend. And, if I'm being honest, I bought it and it sat on my kindle for a while. Until the middle of an ordinary day, when I had one of those "parenting adolescents" breakdowns. You know, the ones the Michelle perfectly describes in this book? I don't know if Michelle reads these reviews, but I have to say, THANK YOU. For writing what was in my heart, and in my head. For redirecting me back to what God wants me to remember, and where my faith lies anchored. Since I read this book, I believe I've re-read it about 5 times by reading various chapters to remind me that I'm not alone in this journey of trying to control situations, step family blending (I especially love the analogy of screws and nails in a blender- just right). I might have worn out the kindle reading the "UnMother's Day" chapter more than 5 times.Anyway, the writing is great - witty, serious, straight forward. The message, just the same. I love that Michelle is not afraid to reveal the truth of things - especially in a world where we all value the appearance of a perfect family, perfect life. I highly recommend buying this book, and reading it at least twice!

The book "Made To Stick" is well-researched and the Heaths' have obviously does their homework; I like the concept of how ideas can be sold and delivered as persuasive opinions and, when powerful enough, change the course of a company's business. I was hoping for something more practical that a reader could put into practice but a lot of the examples were made to demonstrate how some companies thrived and others didn't. All in all, it's a good read but more for information than practical use.

Brothers Chip and Dan Heath in their New York Time’s best-selling book, “Made to Stick,” explore the stickiness of an idea. Those of us who spend time in the start-up world marvel at why one idea gains traction and other, seemingly better ideas, fall to wayside. The Heath brothers provide insights on this phenomenon and provide help for those bent on creating ideas that are “sticky.”“Sticky” ideas are understandable, memorable, and effective in changing thought or behavior. The six underlying SUCCESs principles for making things “stick” are:• Simplicity – Simple=core+compact. Find and share your core idea; make it simple and profound. “It’s the economy, stupid” (Clinton campaign, 1992) is a great example. The inverted pyramid approach which is used in journalism is a good tool to get your headline.• Unexpectedness - We need to violate people’s expectations to get them to pay attention. Break existing patterns to get people’s attention. Southwest flight attendants use humor (there are two doors on either side if you need to jump!) to hold attention when giving the pre-flight safety announcement. Humans adapt incredibly quickly to patterns. Consistent sensory stimulation makes us tune out.• Concreteness – You must help people understand and remember. Don’t use abstractions. Make your core idea concrete. Use common knowledge to make your idea stick. Our greatest villain is the Curse of Knowledge or when we assume everyone knows what we know or shares our unique perspective. We have to see it from the “others” point of view. We forget what other people do not know and slip into “abstractspeak.” Boeing’s criteria for a new plane was not “the best passenger plane in the world” but one that can seat 131 passengers and land on Runway 2-22 at LaGuardia. No ambiguity here.• Credibility – Help people believe by making sure your idea carries its own credentials. Pass the “Sinatra Test.” Examples offered include “Where’s the Beef?” and Reagan’s “Are you better off today?” Both were credible and resonated as they were based on common shared knowledge.• Emotional– Make people care by using the power of association, appealing to self-interest, or identity. “People donate to Rokia more than a wide swath of Africa”; “Honoring the Game” versus the use of the word ‘sportsmanship’; “I’m in charge of morale” as stated by a US military cook in Iraq. We must make people feel something to get them to care. We are wired to feel things, not abstractions.• Stories – Stories get people to act on our ideas. Stories act as a kind of mental flight simulator, preparing us to respond more quickly and effectively. Stories are told and retold because they contain wisdom. The Healths provide what they view are the three basic story plots – the Challenge Plot, The Connection Plot, and the Creativity Plot. Stories can almost single-handedly defeat “The Curse of Knowledge.” I have been involved in a ministry for people in career-transition for over fifteen years. We consistently advise those in-transitions to create stories to highlight their skills and experience when interviewing. It is well understood that interviewers will mostly remember your comportment and more importantly, your stories.A chapter is devoted to each principle with the authors providing context for clarity and understanding, examples, and tools to guide the development of a “sticky” idea. The Curse of Knowledge is what escapes most when trying to pitch an idea. It is the natural psychological tendency that consistently gets in the way of our ability to successfully create “sticky ideas” using these principles. Once we know something, we find it hard to imagine what it was like not to know. This knowledge has “cursed” us and makes it difficult to share our knowledge with others. It is because we cannot readily re-create our listeners state of mind. When a CEO discusses “unlocking shareholder value,” there is a tune playing in his head that the employees can’t hear. On the other hand, President John F. Kennedy knew that opaque, abstract missions don’t captivate and inspire people so he concretely challenged the country with “landing on the moon by the end of the decade.”Throughout the book, the authors present “Idea Clinics” which illustrate how an idea can be made stickier. Example: ”Do smokers really need to understand the workings of the lungs in order to appreciate the dangers of smoking?”The book itself is “sticky’ filled with stories of normal people facing normal problems who did an amazing thing simply by applying these principles, even if they were not aware that they were doing this. They distinguish themselves by crafting ideas that made a difference.Do your ideas gain traction and “Stick” or are they cast aside for less important ideas? “Made to Stick” was written for you.

I love almost all business and marketing books - I inhale them in a few days.I can’t read this book for more than 10 minutes at a time. It actually makes me angry how boring it is.One chapter per letter of SUCCES (intentional). Each chapter is drawn out like no other. The basic premise is revealed, then come in some random stories loosely based on studies. It’s really a terrible book. The idea is cool, will look for a summary.

Some ideas are very “sticky” meaning they are lasting, generative, and convey an important message. A classic example is: “Do onto others as you would have them do onto you.” In Made to Stick, Chip and Dan Heath explain why ideas stick, and provide the reader with a “sticky blueprint.”Essentially, sticky ideas are never a matter of happenstance, but all share six common traits. With a keen understanding of all six traits, you will be able to produce stickier ideas and subsequently revitalize the way you express yourself and transform those whom you lead with positive results.Made to Stick empowers anyone with the right insights and the right message to make any idea “stick.”The book proceeds linearly through the sticky blueprint: the acronym S.U.C.C.E.S. Hence, in order to make an idea sticky it has to be simple, unexpected, concrete, credible, emotional, and tell a story. The peculiars of each trait are explored in comprehensive detail within each chapter. Generally speaking even though this book is 250+ pages, it is a very quick read.Made to Stick is one of three books written on transformative change by the Heath brothers. The other two books are Switch: How to change things when change is hard and Decisive: How to make better choices in life and work. There are many areas of cross-over between the three selections, and I have derived the most value from each book after considering it in context of all three. Hence, Made to Stick helps you to start your journey with a bold idea that anyone can latch onto. Switch reveals how to materialize that idea into tough environments. Finally, Decisive equips you with the tools to navigate fuzzy terrain in the midst of your path to something revolutionary.

I hate reading. I had to read this book for a sales class I'm taking and it is actually very interesting and easy to read! It was enjoyable, kept me reading on and I was learning with every chapter! It very well lays out how to create interest and make concrete images that "stick" with your customer. It was extremely easy for me to think of my own ideas after reading this book. I wowed my instructor in my class with my ideas. Defiantly recommend even if you hate reading, this one is a very easy read. I even highlighted certain things and I would go back and look at it or read it again.

It's an interesting book. I was hoping for more actual technique, but there are a lot of books out there on Kindle Unlimited that do this, and I'm glad to have a little background (which is mainly what this book provides.)

I bought this book after watching a youtube presentation by Joshua Foer regarding his research for the book. I read through this book impatiently, because the reason for buying it was to learn the memory techniques he described in his Youtube video. I found his accounts of the eccentric contestants in the US and world memory tournaments to be overly detailed. Nonetheless, his writing skill are strong.I do wish to warn you that if you try out the book's memory techniques, practicing them can be addicting, as they must have been for the author. Within six weeks, I passed all three of the FCC Amateur Radio license tests. Once starting to practice memorizing the concepts and answers behind the large question pools (1,450), I couldn't stop. Now, having reined in my compulsiveness, I just use the techniques learned from this book to give presentations without using notes and to study for exams. So if you are at all manic when it comes to learning, you may find that this book will magnify those learning habits. This book is excellent journalism rather than a memory technique book. He states that fact and points you towards actual memory technique books. I have purchased and read some of them. Those books do not compare with the motivational aspects of this book to actually try out memory techniques to see if they can enhance your life. This book is a fun read and it may motivate you to learn something new - something that requires lots of memorization. Read it and go take a bar exam, like the one for US Tax Court.

This is a great book. It's engaging and well-written. However, I bought it to learn the memory techniques, not so much for the anecdotes. But, the anecdotes are rich and provide an entertaining trail to go down through the book. You can learn some memory techniques here, but the author does not focus on them so I would not call this a step-by-step guide to improving your memory so much as it's a journalistic tome on the history and current event surrounding memory and subtopics therein. I do recommend the book just for the sheer entertainment of reading how people have done what they've done but as far as a guide goes, you have to get the tips throughout the stories. I would have preferred an upfront discussion of all techniques you can use to improve your memory and then the stories to follow. However, reading the stories the the author reports on and his conclusion regarding how he came to view these memory tools and techniques, I can understand why he went the direction he did with his book (which is a great one).

I just finished Moonwalking with Einstein and found it to be an interesting story about a journalist's self congratulatory pursuit of memory athletics but very, very little on actual techniques. The best part (for me) was two pages on Deliberate Practice. If you want some history on memory competitions - fun read. If you want memory techniques - The Memory Book by Lorayne and Lucas is far superior.

As a history of the author's quest for a memory-challenge championship, the book is mildly entertaining. As a compendium of memory-improving techniques and practices, this book is absolutely USELESS. Perhaps the book's description has changed since I wrote this review, but at the time I purchased it, it was advertised as "cutting-edge science" for improving your memory. Instead, it's basically a 274-page-long "selfie" about what Josh did on his summer vacation, which really wasn't what I was hoping for.

Would’ve preferred a book that goes into detail about mnemonic techniques and strategies. Not a book that briefly mentions 5 or 6 techniques with no detail and rambles on about the memory olympics...

Entertaining, humorous, and surprisingly philosophical. Foer turned a seemingly insignificant brush with mnemonics into an investigation of its history and then, on a more personal level, into a passion that led him to become the US memory champion. From Greek antiquity, through the middle ages, and into the modern era, he charts the meaning and use of human memory. What you learn is surprising and thought-provoking as Foer plumbs the purposes of memory and the influences of reading, the written word, and the ubiquitous external memory devices (e.g, smartphones) we all use today. Aren’t these, after all, crutches for our frail cognitive abilities? Yes, and no, as Foer ably demonstrates. Along the way, we meet the colorful characters, self-promoters, savants, and geeks who populate this fascinating sphere of human activity. My only quibble is that Foer tantalizes us with memory techniques without delivering more details on the specifics of all aspects and applications of the technique. His memory palace is filled with mental images of a moonwalking Einstein (whence the title of the book), but the mechanics of how he associates these person-object-activity groupings with the number, card, or object they represent is beyond my limited creative capacity. Nevertheless, this is highly recommended.

Looking for specific tips and instructions on how to improve my memory, I was quite disappointed. The author gives a history of leaders in the field, rubbing shoulders with memory giants, and even his experience of entering into a contest, but this is not the How To book I was looking for. Maybe that was his point, but it was a waste of time for me.
