How much do you know about the woman who was most famous for having written Frankenstein? I was surprised to learn just how much I didn’t know about her life. She was raised to be highly intelligent and questioned pretty much everything. All of her life she was surrounded by a great number of authors, poets, and other highly educated people. She was a free thinker and while is most famous as the author of “Frankensteinâ€, she wrote a great number of other books, poems and essays as well.I found her life fascinating, and at times quite heartbreaking. She didn’t always follow conventional standards, and while she did wind up married to the man who was the love of her life, when she first met him he was already married to someone else. Mary Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley possessed what can be described as an epic love for each other, though at times their lives together were also quite tragic.Much of their lives together could be considered scandalous. They ran the complete gambit of emotions, from happy and exciting to lonely and heartbreaking. I won’t spoil their story for you. It is something you really should read for yourself. But I will give you one interesting fact that I had not previously been aware of… you’ll just need to read the book yourself if you want to know the rest of the story behind it…. When Mary Shelley had been dead for a year, her son unlocked her portable desk to discover the remains of her husband’s heart inside. I know that after reading that fact, I couldn’t put the book down until I learned the rest of the story behind it!
Not until I got this book, did I realize it was a YA one. That was okay, though, since I doubt I could have made it through an adult biography about Mary Shelley. Reading about her obviously makes one also have to read a lot about Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron--two poets who bore me to tears. Author Catherine Reef unfortunately seemed to give them more attention, too, while they were alive, than she did Mary Shelley. What motivated Mary Shelley to write and how she wrote seemed to be skimmed over, in my opinion. Most of this YA book just seemed like a never-ending description of the Shelleys moving from one place to another, losing children to one thing or another, and always having money concerns about one thing or another. While it's a highly readable book with lots of information, it's probably not going to inspire many to write like or to want to be like Mary Shelley.
This review is for the book, “The Strange True Tale Of Frankenstein’s Creator, Mary Shelleyâ€. Catherine Reef is the award winning author and she is noted for her more than fifty books for young people and adults. The book is directed at ages 12 and up. I happen to be a lot older than twelve and have grandchildren in their teens. I enjoyed the book even though the writing was directed at the younger reader. The book contains themes that include adultery, parental arguments that cause distress for children, disputes about religion and other topics for the more mature reader who would have enough experience and judgement to understand the implications of some of the actions, words and thoughts expressed in this story. The young adult orientation causes the author to not explore in great depth the critical thinking and internal conflicts that attend decisions made by the people in this book. A version for mature adults might explore for many pages of dialogue how a character comes to a decision to commit adultery or attempt forced sex. But, in the final analysis, the book works and I enjoyed how quickly each action comes to the point.Of great importance to the reader experience, the book is replete with engravings of its people at various stages of life. There are also engravings of countries, locations, and portraits. The action takes place in England, Paris, Geneva and there are travels in Europe and other places. The story is set against the backdrop of the late 1700s and continues to the mid 1800s. The newly independent United States of America provides the impetus for the French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon. The politics of the times and their effect on the homelands of the characters in England are often a topic of discussion among the characters. Many famous people and events happen during the course of the narrative including wars, slavery, and smallpox. Shakespeare’s literary influence, Lord Byron's free lifestyle, Aaron Burr's time in Europe, and many famous people touch this tale and impact psychology and actions of the characters in this book. Photography comes into play during the course of events and so there are photos as well as portraits of the characters on top of the many engravings. There are also copies of pages from letters and notes kept by Mary Shelley. Her life was not an easy one. Her mother died eleven days after she was born. Her mother had been a writer, a feminist and an adventurer. Her father was an author although neither famous nor profitable. His life was a struggle. He remarried and Mary had to adjust to a stepmother and children brought into the marriage. It was a bustling, contentious, pushy family environment. Home schooling and boarding schools formed part of Mary’s education.Percy Byshhe Shelley, a romantic poet of some fame, enters the story and intersects the lives of the family members and one thing leads to another until he and Mary, at age 16, become romantically involved. Eventually she bore him a son. Further along, his father, Percy Bysshe Shelley passes away. Next, Mary’s son inherits his grandfather’s estate. As with some of today’s family squabbles over estates, the relatives come around to seek a share and things get interesting.The travel and movement of Mary Shelley and those around her during a time of horses, carriages, and boats would do credit to a traveler of today who gets to use airplanes, vehicles and trains. In fact, the author often introduces today’s movies, books, media and financial results that the people in this story have impacted a century and a half ago. The creation of the Frankenstein novel and its grotesque, man-made monster and the characters in the novel was not given enough detail in this book. I wish there had been more insight provided as to how the famous monster came to be. The explanations were adequate, but I would like to have learned more about the bringing to life of this enduring horror story. It was an enjoyable read and an education in literature and period lifestyles. The book also serves as a study in literary history of some of the authors and poets of the times. But, be advised that some younger teens may not be mature enough or sufficiently well read to appreciate this story.
Author Catherine Reef has good material to work with here and for the most part makes good use of it. I really enjoyed that the book is amply illustrated and often found myself flipping back to a picture to help me better visualize a character. She paints a very good picture of the times in which Mary Shelley lived, which in many ways were more similar to today than we usually think. For example, unmarried cohabitation and unwed motherhood weren’t at all uncommon, although the laws pertaining to them were very different.The writing itself is sometimes a bit jerky and disjointed. There are times a chapter ends on what seems to be a gasping cliffhanger of a question, only to have the question answered in the very first sentence of the next chapter. Reef also uses that irritating convention where all of the female characters are consistently referred to by their first names and all of the men by their last names; not a big deal, but irksome.Mary Shelley’s story was much more than simply “the girl who imagined Frankenstein’s monster,†and Reef covers it well. It’s also very interesting to learn how this young woman and her friends set themselves the task of writing scary stories one night, much as we might come up with campfire stories, and created one that is still part of our culture today. Every year at Halloween, at least one Frankenstein monster and one Bride of Frankenstein still visit my house.
