LOVE this book. I had been looking for a feminist book that opened my eyes about patriarchy and the effects that it had on society and the themes that played out in male/female interactions because of it..and this book is it! The Gender Knot is extremely informative (my book is mostly highlighted because of it..defeats the purpose of highlighting, I know) and extremely up-to-date in terms of how we need to understand and address patriarchy (systems over blaming the individual). I'm about half way through, so I'll update this post once I'm finished (if I can remember), but if any of this interests you, I definitely recommend that you buy this book!!

As a minister I've been looking for a single book that explains well the patriarchal disfunctional society in which we find ourselves. As the author points out, we are so immersed in patriarchy that we don't recognize when we are unconscious participants in it. I find much in this book that is useful in working with groups and my church in turning away from patriarchy and making our small part of the world a better more open and equal place for everyone. Gotta start somewhere!

This book gave me the tools to address how sexism and patriarchy affected my own upbringing, and recognize how it has continued to affect me. It's also given me the tools to talk to other men about it and be a strong ally to women. Johnson repeatedly focuses in on an *institution* being the core of the problem, without losing sight of responsibility of individuals to try to change that institution by avoiding the paths of least resistance that reinforce it. Johnson understands that the existence of patriarchy is only the fault of men if they choose to do nothing about it. This book is a must-have for everyone, particularly men, who are interested in understanding feminism and gender.

This is a great book to help explain the hows and whys of patriarchy and its implications to both men and women from a male perspective. It's clear, concise, and straightforward approach neither blames nor apologizes but instead examines the issues and then continues forward to propose simple methods for combating the problems facing our nation and all human beings in it.

When I bought this book I read - like I always do - the low ratings...I was a bit concerned when I read two people claiming that this guy *hates men* but I bought the book anyways. I got a great deal. NOw, I seriously wonder how those reviews came to pass since this author's writing shows such a deep underlying compassion for humans in the text.This is a great book. It is the kind of book you want as madatory reading in social studies in school. Yes, it is a bit repetetive (especially if you are not reading your first book in this area) but never really redundant. but it gives you deep insights not just in the system but it sheds light on issues almost every heterosexual couple seems to be struggling with on some front. and it doesn't do what most book about couple's issues these days suggest (which is baiscally for the lady to either *make* him see the light or walk) it rats out the real culprit without blaming one side but at the same time squary placing the responsibilty for change on the side which benefits most from tha system.not a small feat IMO.At some point, if you are woman, you will get angry as a number of your suspicions get confirmed. YOu will become angry as you see your father and husband colluding to keep you in your place. BUt you will also be able to see past that behaviour wnd not truly BLAME them for it.If you are a man, I suppose this isn't a comfortable read either. BUt while Mr. Johnson is telling you to change he manages to never blame you for teh history.I was really amazed by his *proposition* on how we need to adress the issue. He gives a couple of very specific suggestions on what to do. He assures us that the big leaps come over generations and that they are coming. But in teh end he dares us to REALLY look. To see what this system is, how it objectivies humans and devalues your mothers, wifes, sisters and friends and he dares you to see and NOT change, because That is what you will do, once you have seen how this works

a must read for all the people, women, walking around, spouting off about 'patriarchy' and having no real idea what this is, what it means and how comprehensive it is. READ THIS!! I am doing it on Audible. The narrator is slow so spend it up a touch. :)

A five star book of drawings, but copied from a German text. It could have been excellent, but lacks anything to make it suitable for a non-German speaker. No descriptions or suitable identification in English. Just high quality line drawings from a foreign book.

Sure, it'd be nice if more of the drawings were printed a bit darker. And I'm always a fan of having his books be as big as possible. Good news is, they didn't clutter up the pages with a bunch of words. They let the drawings speak for themselves. There's whole bits of worlds here that will never exist. His drawings are a hint of what else he could have accompished. If only more folks could turn these into real buildings. Heck, I've always wanted to just make some models from some of the best of his drawings. Now that's something I would buy. Anyone game for creating some? I rarely say, "America's best" anything but there's no question, even 50 years after his death he's still America's best architect. Like Jimi is still America's best guitarist 36 years on. I love fine books with big pictures of his various homes and other buildings. To me, this is something else altogether, a journey into a world that exists something like worlds that come into existance in paintings or novels. Heck, he even does nice drawings of people in some of these. His brilliant knack for designing buildings into the context of its setting is one of his great strengths and it's even more clear in a number of these drawings. Who cares if this book was published in 1962. That is not a factor. I am unaware of a better book of his drawings, at least one that I can buy on amazon.com for under $10. Sure, there's some over $100. but I'm a workin' man, I can't afford that. I bring this into the home and my wife even admires it even though she's not the FLW fan that I am. Quality will tell folks. Get this if you have any inclinations for his drawings. A very satisfying walk through the spirits of what could have been. chrisbct@hotmail.com

The labels on all the plans are in German. The product description says English. I got it for my husband for Father’s Day and of course he noticed it right away. It is a bit of a misrepresentation.

This book is a very good collection of F.LL. Wright's earlier drawings of various sites and plans. It would be great to have one in hard cover if there were any that were published.

The fact that this novel often shows up on the AP reading list piqued my interest. Once I downloaded this and realized it was a behemoth of a read, I doubted I'd be able to use it in my classroom, but I read on regardless. Despite its length, this novel is fluid and never tiresome. Its beauty is reflected on every page. The main character, Johnny Wheelwright, spends a lot of time talking about his best friend Owen Meany, the book's titular character, but through this narrative we learn a tremendous amount about the Johnny as well. Even alluding to the content of the story gives away too much, and this is a book you must experience for yourself.As an avid reader, many books fade with time. This one will always stay with me.

for this book. I am a fair to middling fan of John Irving and I had to give Owen a couple of tries but, in the end, he got me. This book remains magical after literally a dozen or more readings. I laugh and I cry at exactly the same parts where I always laugh and always cry but the story and its miracle never grows old. It is a story of love. Love between friends, between a mother and her son, within families we are born into and within families we create. It is so hard to reduce the story to a simple rehash in a review. Owen came from a poor and depressed home where both of his parents were mentally handicapped. John came from a fatherless but loving home, where he lived with his mother and grandmother. Often, imperfect people, are used by God, to influence and teach others, life lessons. Owen was such a person, and he knew what his purpose was.A Prayer For Owen Meany is a book that will grip your heart, trigger your anger, make you think, laugh out loud and cry. It’s a fascinating book that will leave an imprint on your heart.

John Irving is a thoughtful, detailed writer. He creates amazing and surprising characters, and his stories have many twists and turns, so that even when he suggests an outcome, you don't know when or how you are going to get there, so it is very surprising when it arrives. This book is a coming of age story about two boyhood friends and the things that happen to them as children and as young adults. The story is told first person by Owen Meany's best friend, and Owen Meany is the true hero of the book. Irving's awarenesses of life, of religion, of politics, and of human relationships are deep and complex. All these are reflected in his writing. Ultimately, this is a satisfying book. Personally, however, I found as a Kindle book, it was hard to stay involved with it. I ended up reading it over a long period of months, when usually I finish a book in days. The pacing is slow, the detail is great. Ultimately satisfying but a long, long journey for the reader (at least for me, in this format). But it's a good book, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes John Irving's work.

I think this book is unforgettable.It's long and requires some patience.There is quite a bit of political meandering, but I lived through the Viet Nam thing with my friends (and my husband) deciding to go or trying to get a deferment..The character of Owen Meany was unlike any character I've ever met before. and the relationship between him and the narrator was wonderful.For me to call a book unforgettable is saying a lot since I read or listen to audio books on a daily basis. A lot of books run through your mind and are gone. This is not one of them... at least not for me.But then I have always been a fan of John Irving and I think this is one of his best.

And now he is a part of mine, too.John Irving is one of my all-time favorite authors. I love his descriptions and his in-depth involvement in his characters. The time he invests in his stories, not just a period but a life, carries his readers along an entirety of experiences. Yet this story was difficult to get into. It took a long time to see the thread that brought it all together. After a while, I was involved enough to feel a commitment, to be curious. Then it all came together. Like John Wheelwright, I needed time to see the big picture, to become a believer.

St. Paul is the great fund raiser and dogma developer for the Christian church. While fighting off St. Paul's homosexual advances, St. Timothy experiences the charismatic St. Paul and his miraculous stage show from up close. The business interests from the future, namely NBC and its parent company General Electric, plan to utilize their time travel technology to allow them to transport a television crew back to the time of the Crucifixion at Golgotha. With the intent of sweeping the TV ratings, studio executives are transported to 96 AD in the form of holograms. St. Timothy is their main contact; the executives spare no expense to help St. Timothy prepare his Gospel. Apparently, a mysterious hacker has accessed history at its core and is erasing all other historical documentations of Jesus and his early church. So, St. Timothy must negotiate with self-serving holograms from the future. At times, he will have two holograms of the same person in his room, sent back from the future, but from ten years apart, so their holograms will be of varying quality.Gore Vidal takes a cynical and heretical view of religion and emphasizes Christianity's objectives as self-promotion in pursuit of the all mighty dollar. St. Paul is a charismatic marketer who rolls into a town with his dog-and-pony show. Sometimes, he is taken in and provided large sums of money, other times; he is nearly stoned to death. Vidal makes references to Saint Paul's Holy Rolodex of names used for fundraising and of Jesus' attempt to lower the Prime Rate as the real reason for Jesus' ousting of the money-lenders from the temple.With the aid of worldly knowledge he gains from a television that is transported back through time, St. Timothy transforms from an innocent apostle's assistant to an aggressive deal maker.
