In The Gates of Damascus author Lieve Joris presents an intimate portrait of modern Syria. Joris went to Syria in the wake of the Gulf War and stayed with a Syrian woman, Hala, whom she'd met many years before at a conference in Baghdad. Lonely Planet has chosen to launch a new line of travel literature books with this well-written reminiscence of a stay in Syria. Belgium-born Joris visited her Muslim friend Hala and Hala's 11-year-old daughter in Damascus, and she recounts their life in a fundamentalist society. Hala's husband was jailed as a political prisoner when their child was an infant, and her fear of the dreaded mukhabarat or secret police is pervasive. The women spend evenings at home, where they relax in their nightgowns and endlessly discuss Hala's relationship with her husband. She is allowed to visit him, bring changes of clothing as the seasons change and take home trinkets he crafts in jail, but she has fallen in love with someone else and is unsure what she would do when and if he is released. Anxious to see more of Syria, the author goes on a desert walking trip with a group of Syrian Christians, whose sympathy for President Assad is markedly different from Hala's views. The author, who remains a shadowy presence, keeps her own politics largely hidden, although she objects to Hala's rabid anti-Semitism. More about Joris, how she met Hala, or even when this trip took place would have been helpful. This is a lovely book on daily life in Syria, dated but still insightful. A pity it is out of print. Hopefully, it will republished soon.

This author is so sensitive towards her subjects. I really love this writer. She tackles difficult questions and situations. This is an inside story where Joris looks at situations (Syrian 'common' life) from her own perspective and she tries to do this from the country's/peoples perspective. Joris also examines herself along this perspective. Like a real journalist on one hand and like a real novelist on the other hand, in my opinion.

I am very interested in the material that Ms. Joris covers in her book. The most lasting impression however is how well she portrays the psychological weight of being a woman in the middle east. I sort of felt like I had spent 4 months in Syria after reading it. It rings true -- based on my travel experiences and lives of friends.If you liked this (or are interested in Middle Eastern women's issues) you'll probably like Nine Parts of Desire, The Price of Honor, and Memoirs from the Women's Prison (Saadawi). Generally more academic, Fatima Mernissi is a good writer.

Riveting travel memoir. Book in excellent condition.

Worthy ending to the Sparrow.I resisted this book for years. How could anything live up to The Sparrow? Oh, me, of little faith, the circle is so beautifully completed.Read The Sparrow first, and then this wonderful book takes you on the same journey as the crew of the Stella Maris, because what you think you understand, what seems obvious to you, is utterly wrong. The villains of the first piece have agendas so different from your assumptions that, after surviving the shock of the first book, you will have to rethink everything. Ms. Russell didn't lie to us, she just let us make all the wrong conclusions. Of all the ideas these books present, this feels the truest - As Fr. Sandoz says of Voelker in The Sparrow, "...It's human nature. He wanted it to be some mistake I made that he wouldn't have made." We all made exactly the same mistake at the end of The Sparrow. We thought we'd sorted it out.That the characters I so loved could come back into my life and make me cry all over again is a testament to Ms. Russell's amazing skill with a story. And her depth of knowledge in so many fields weaves a tapestry of ideas, emotions and people. Philosophy and physics, theology and revolution, genetics and music, an amazing, emotional roller coaster of sentient life and intelligent reading.Impossible to classify, these two books together cover the whole spectrum of fiction, should have their own wall at the book store. Courtroom style drama, space travel, religion, love story, communication failure and success, personal drama, time travel, cosmic misunderstandings and even an invented botany lesson or two. What a feast!In a lifetime of hungry reading, The Sparrow is my favorite book. This is the end of The Sparrow.

4 1/2 stars actually! This 2 volume set is, imo, exceptionally well thought out; and, for this reader, another crack in the cosmic egg of my world. For anyone who is in any manner committed to honest self examination, expansion, or continued personal growth, so to speak, this book (as well as "The Sparrow") accomplishes just that, and more. Aside from the story of the revolutionary, cultural, upheaval on the planet Rakhat (which is interesting enough in and of itself) the reader is almost forced to go beyond the confines of our ordinary way of looking at our own civilization. Some of us will even come to face the notion that many of us are not much more than meat or food for the ruling class.Thank you Mary Doria Russell for a most thoughtful, useful, and interesting excursion!

I too felt that the Sparrow was a good standalone book and did not need a sequel, however, the sequel did turn out to be a fine book of its own.There are many underlying moral issues to be pondered. The ethics of population control, the difficulty of avoiding negligent harm arising from sex, the tendency of intercultural contact to lead to serious harm to one or both cultures, etc.I did think more could have been done with the Earthen characters. I was waiting for a discussion as to the theology of evangelizing an alien race in the first place, but no real discussion of that ever occurred. I do believe there is indeed quite a bit to be learned of the theology of suffering and forgiveness from this story, however, I was left feeling that the ending in which Sandoz has his moment with Isaac's music was a little forced and was only there to make the ending a happier one, which isn't always the case.A great story, not quite as emotion-wrenching as the Sparrow, but a great read for anyone into sci-fi or intercultural fiction.

I just finished reading this book (after already reading the other one) then I sobbed for 15 minutes straight. Not because I disliked the book. Not so much because of sadness that it was over but more for relief... & for my own happiness at the end.I so loved reading this book as well as it's predecessor. The writing is superb, the characters so vivid & real that I felt like I could reach out & touch them. The story is so unique & well developed...I can't say enough. Why didn't I know about these 2 books before now? If you enjoy sci-fi you'll enjoy this. If you aren't into sci-fi don't worry, chances are you'll like this anyway...it's just a great story.This 2 book series has already won many accolades and so you don't need to hear me go on and on about how wonderful it is. Also I'm sure many other reviewers before me have given a detailed synopses of what the story is about. I'm sure many people have even told you who the characters are and what the plot is. So I don't need to do that.I will say this, yes the book has deep religious and spiritual themes through-out. All the main characters seem to go through real tests of the human spirit - dark night of the soul type of stuff. So it's a heavy book that makes you think just because so many topics are brought up. If you 'hate' this type of book then it may not be for you. However, I'd recommend that you get out of your comfort zone and try this. It'll be good for you to put yourself in the place of some of these characters and think about what you'd do if you were them.Wishing you the best if you choose to try out these books. They are going to the top of my Top 10 list.

I don't want to use the word outdated to explain what this book is like. I'd rather use the word old fashioned because it's the same math we had when we were kids, and I think my math skills turned out okay. I am a math teacher after all. I've used this as our main text book in the classroom for the first time this year. Our students loved this book because they felt it was easier to understand than the common core book we were using. Case in point, they were able to do their homework on their own with this book, as opposed to needing extra help when we did the common core stuff.In some cases tho, I'll admit that this book was below grade level. The explanations and examples are a lot gentler than the ones I've seen in those common core books. When you're first learning a concept, you shouldn't start out with incredibly hard examples, and teach them ten different ways to solve a problem because that confuses students and causes them to hate math. Like in this book, examples should start out gently until you've mastered the concepts. What I would like to see though are more practice problems. The extra problems also should be a little more "meaty" than the ones that are found in the book. This can be done very easily on the Mastering Essentials website (hint hint Mr. Fisher).I believe you will find that this book is pretty good, but only if you want to take the express train to algebra. Like an express train bypasses many stations and gets you to the same destination much faster, this is an essentials book. It does not cover many of the obscure topics and tricky word problems that are found on the common core state exams. The bulk of which are not needed in order to learn higher math. For that reason, if your intent is to get your child ready for the common core exam, you will need to supplement this book with a common core aligned math book. On the other hand, if your intent is for your child to actually learn the fundamentals and like math, and not just study to the test, then you should buy this book. Finally, I like the fact that this book has videos that go along with each lesson. And I also love the price!Oh, and one last thing. Although this book says middle and high school, IMHO this book is more for 6th and 7th graders. Once they finish this one, they should be ready for the No Nonsense Algebra book. The only way I'd recommend this be used in high school is as a remedial review for those students who took common core math and didn't learn the basics.

Ignore all of the reviews that say you need to look up concepts, or there are no instructions!! Free, online videos are included for every lesson, you just need to understand how to use the book correctly! Make sure to read the first several pages of the workbook BEFORE you try to actually use it or teach it.We homeschool and this is the best math book we have used. There are daily drills, followed by daily review and, finally, a few problems covering new material. The format is simple and follows a very clear progression. The videos cover each new concept and the author has you follow along and write down concepts and problems. Mr. Fisher speaks and instructs in an easy to understand, slow-paced way. You can pause and go back if you don't understand. This book is not only appropriate for the middle grades, but also for anyone who needs to brush up on their basic skills (adults included). There are no cutesy or child-like illustrations in the book and the videos are taught as if he is speaking to an adult, not condescending at all. Perfect for my 7th grader! I wish I had found this series earlier. We will definitely be purchasing his math books for the next several years!

My son has ADHD as well as a pretty serious math anxiety that he developed thanks to his teacher in the public school he attended berating and belittling him in front of the class when he couldn't keep up. I have since started homeschooling him using this book and he is doing very well.

I bought this book thinking it was actually "middle school/high school" level of math. Unfortunately, there is a lot missing from this book. It is mostly addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The level I would say is more fourth/fifth grade, at least according to the curriculum in our county in South Florida. If you want anything related to the following, this is not the book for you. It DOES NOT HAVE: ratios, proportions, percents, three-dimensional geometry, coordinate plane and functions, types of numbers (whole vs. natural vs. integers, etc), algebra, etc. {And this is just the middle school math stuff.}

I wrote to the author to get his opinion on what books I should purchase to get ready for a math placement test. He wrote back very promptly with advice and words of encouragement. I'll probably purchase a few more of his books when I finish this one!

I received this book, paperback binding in tact, the book unharmed, no bent pages. Everything looked great. After review a few chapters in, I decided to review the “test taking hints” and the pages located after chapter 11 only to find that they do not exist. The “Table of Contents” states the book should have a minimum of 793 pages, “References” located on page 793. Unfortunately for me, my book ends at page 768! My chapter 11 starts at page 759-786, so my chapter 11 is even incomplete - (have not gotten to this chapter yet for studying to notice this sooner than at this time.)None the less the product, the education I am receiving is great, and I am learning from this.

Great review book

As a person that loves all things organized, I couldn't have loved the layout of this book any more! Even the little touches with the tabs being easy to ready in the shape of crayons was too cute and made it easy when looking for the answers. The rationales were anything but boring. For a review book, this one was not only educational, but actually very funny at times. Thank you Mr. DeBoer for writing something people can actually use and will remember for every day practice!

Good questions with explanations. Good refresher and new learning for me

This book is the reason for my passing the CPEN! Scott De Boer combined humor with a thorough explanation of Pediatric ER concepts. He presented cases in such a way that they're easy to remember and understand - both for the test and nursing practice. Wonderful book! Can't recommend it enough!

My feedback to the Author:Sir, much like many law enforcement professionals, you’ve fallen victim to your own ego. I’m confident you read these reviews so I wanted to give you some helpful feedback.You start the book with your qualifications and generally badassery. This is ok and expected. As a reader, I appreciate your qualifications.Yet, as the book goes on you simply overdue it. Chapter after chapter you recite your: education, martial arts expertise and physical prowess. My god man! We get it!As a reader, I’m skipping over these sections constantly. I think, ok, he is that guy in law enforcement (we all know that guy). It takes away from the gem of a book you have created.To reiterate, we get it man! You’re Chuck Norris times two. You created Giraffes by uppercutting a horse. You can hear sign language. You are so bad ass, you make onions cry. You don’t shake hands, you make them tremble. You play Russian roulette with a fully loaded gun and win!For the love of all that is holy, please have a serving of humble pie! Whew....rant over. Excuse my candor.Hopefully this sufficiently illustrates my point. One smart ass cop to another. Otherwise, this is a great book. Godspeed.

First of all, this isn't a terrible read. The book gives basic pointers on how to calm situations. That's all the good to it. The first few chapters are the author explaining why it's great that you're reading his book. Mixed in with that, he ensures that you know all about his personal achievements. Sure that makes him sound like an expert, but after the 5th time of being reminded that he's a PHd it gets a little old. I'm sure you could find better books on this topic, but if you want to hear how awesome the author of this one is, just read the first few pages.

The book is only about a quarter of an inch thick, but five chapters in they're still introducing the concept and telling you about all the things you're GOING to learn. There's a foreword and an introduction. None of the chapters should be telling me what this book is going to teach me, it should already be teaching me by that point. The method is a good one, but this book is padded out beyond all reason.

Okay book. Has some good advice, some of the most useful stuff are related to samurai mindset. My main criticism comes from the fact the like many other books, this one could be written in 50 pages or less, although I concur that a book with 50 pages or less raises a suspiscious eyebrow from potencial customers about being thorough and/or comprehensive so if you buy it keep in mind you will read the same stuff many times throughout the book.

The concepts in the book make quite a bit of sense and the techniques will certainly help me at home and at work. I like that the book focuses on a principle and gives specific examples and techniques to use that principle in real life. Sure, the evidence is anecdotal, but that's what makes the principle stick.I had two small annoyances with the book. First, the first few chapters are a sales pitch for why you should read the book. Spoiler alert: I already bought the book; no need to sell it to me. Second, the book can be a bit more repetitive than I like. I understand that the author is driving home a point but it seems that, sometimes, he goes too far.Overall, I'd use it again as reference and recommend it to others (it went to my personal library at work and was immediately borrowed). Worth your time.

My thoughts on this book in a couple of words: Informative and casual.Thoughts on this book:Fun stories paired with great advice.It's like taking a class, and is best read with a notebook on the side.I have improved personally from reading this book.Read if:Want to learn how to speak better.You have a open mind.Willing to re-read several times.Do not read if:You do not like repetition.

There are some good pointers here and I can see how these tips will help deflect in the law enforcement field; yet, not quite applicable to the general workforce. The author seems to try to hard to prove his credibility. I got tired of that. Outcomes are proof enough. His most important point was the approach and attitude.

My main issue with this book is how the author spent about 3/4 of the text saying that verbal judo works and how he learned it through his years as a police officer and so on, and talks about how he has two belts in two different styles of martial arts and yada yada yada, but when it comes down to tips/advice/execution, its only about three sentences throughout the entire book that benefited me. I was expecting more on how to deescalate a situation and turn it around and have the other person comply through smooth talking and such, but its mostly an entire book about this guy talking about how hes such a smart experienced person, high education, police officer, martial arts ninja, and verbal judo master, which he never even explains. Everything you need to know is on the back cover.

I like most post-apocalyptic books and this one started out pretty good. However, by the middle of the second book, I quit reading it because it was boring and repetitive.

I haven’t been able to put this series down. I’m on book five will update when I finish the remaining books!!!

When I finished the first 4 novels...ordered 5,6 &7.....can't wait for the next ....

Repetitive cowboy story line

Pretty standard dystopian storyline. It seems in a lot of these novels that whatever the catastrophe is, bikers, gangs, outlaws, convicts, and low-lifes in general always seem to survive the catastrophe at a much higher rate than the general population. I would think that the catastrophe in this series, a mutated virulent flu, would kill all demographics of the population equally. Also, none of these people can figure out how to convert a diesel engine to burn almost any kind of oil, something that is common today? One guy can figure out how to burn ethanol in an airplane engine, but nobody can seem to figure that one out for any other gas motor? After one suspends a little knowledge and takes the books at face value, it is a good story. After all I did read all 7.

I've read all the books in the Day After Never series. Highly recommend. FYI - there are no zombies in these books, just people trying to survive after the unthinkable happens.
