I was so sad when the book ended. Grace made me feel like I knew her for ages. She's funny and certainly not afraid to tell it like it is! I read this simultaneously with "A Beautiful Fall" so sometimes the "characters" overlapped. Truly, fact is greater than fiction!

A lot of the world was introduce to Grace Coddington when the movie, The September Issue, came out about how Vogue puts the greatest issue of the year together. But, if you are a Vogue fanatic (like me) and have access to the internet (like me), you know who the woman behind the vision of the fashion editorials at Vogue is. This is her story.I started out by listening to it as she read and had to buy the book. This woman...this ICON of fashion has been everywhere, done everything and met everyone. She is so humble and it comes through in this book. I've been amazed by her fashion editorial spreads for years but to hear how she decides what to do, how to dress the models, how she wants them to stand, etc. is fascinating. Her early years as a model and the things she's been through in her life make her even more down to earth.I so admire her and all she's done. Keep on keeping on, Grace. I hope you have many more years to make your magic at Vogue.

Sweet, charming, funny and engrossing book - by the time I reached the end, I felt like Grace and I had become good friends. This is a fascinating journey into the powerful world of high fashion and its global community of talented, eccentric people. Grace Coddington is an inspiration, especially for baby-boomer women, giving us insights into her aging process and how she's dealt with it in a world where looks are everything. The book has some excellent photos and wonderful illustrations. Coddington's squiggly little ink drawings will wiggle their way into your heart!

Grace's memoir is a little like movies that can't figure out what they want to be and the tone flip flops around, never sticking to one.Coddington clearly has had an amazing life and she shows us a slice of cultural history from the inside and if you are interested in the fashion/modeling world during the early days, you will enjoy the book. However, her personal life is woven in and out of her professional life in a very uneven fashion. She glosses over the most painful parts of her life, but then delves a tiny bit deeper into other parts so you think you're going to get a juicy memoir sometimes, but you never do.Her reporting of the early days is extensive and interesting, as we move into the current day, she gets less detailed and less interesting. We don't anything about how she really felt about almost anything. It's very detached except when she's talking about how she drew her eyeliner and her cats. In fact, her most passionate and bizarre chapter is all about her cats and to what lengths she goes to in order to take care of them. We get more info on the cats than on her infertility or feelings about it.I did enjoy the parts about the early days of modern modeling, but overall it's just ok. I think the rating system is jacked for making three stars "it's ok" and one star "i hated it" so i'm giving it two stars because it's not that great and it left me with a little sour taste in my mouth. If she really didn't want her personal life in the book, then she should have and could have taken it out and focused on the professional side and made it a stronger book.

Grace Coddington is Anna Wintour 's right hand woman. She has managed to garner great press while Her Anna-ness is portrayed as the Editor from Hell. In this memoir it is clear why the two women can and have worked so well together for so many years. They have a symbiosis that has helped elevate the public's interest in all things FASHION. Both have managed to navigate the avenues of female personalities to achieve success. I don't think there could be an Anna without a Grace. Coddington started out as a model and quickly became a darling of the 60's Mod scene. She appears to have controlled her ego and vanity in order to make a successful transition to Creative Director. It is a particular trait of some successful people that you feel you know them (or would like to know them) even though it would never happen. Grace Coddington is one of those people. You applaud her achievements, feel sad for her troubles and end up liking the whole person.A great book for anyone but particularly for women.

Grace: A Memoir was a relaxing, fun read. No tension, no struggles just a wonderful narrative of her life first as a model during the hip 1960's London and Carnaby Street. Then her story evolves into her life as a fashion editor for high fashion magazines. She started in London and then finally ends up at the American Vogue as the second in command to Anna Wintour. Along the way she describes events and photo shoots with lots of famous models, photographers and gives the reader a very intimate personal entry into the world of high fashion, such as the distant photo shots on mountain tops and secluded private beaches around the world. She herself is a very interesting woman and she has a very strong and positive working relationship with Anna Wintour at American Vogue, which you may know is not known for her warm fuzzy personality. But, Grace can handle her without lots of drama and she does. Anyone who is fascinated by fashion and the way it is communicated to the world will find this an absolute wonderful read. It is well over 400 pages but I zipped through it in two settings because of it's ease with the reader. Worth every penny I paid for it. I would love to meet Grace sometime, I know I would like her, actually I do already. She lives with a interesting man in NYC who was a former hairdresser, someone whose path crossed with hers as they did shoots all over the world.

Lovely read... an amazing life... one might say allot of name dropping, but hey, she worked hard and got to meet amazing prople and go to amazing places.... and at a time when life had allot more class, style and mystery then it does now........ amazing Grace, you were blessed... the best to you...

High quality notebook. Kids at school really liked them. They also have a index for easy reference. No bulk pricing. And they are a bit pricey compared to other books.

I once read that you should never put anything on your skin that you wouldn't also put into your mouth. Well, this book is nothing but mouth-watering skin care recipes that are quick and easy (often only two or three ingredients), and many of the ingredients are already in your kitchen. They require a little more effort than store-bought beauty products, however, since they have to be kept refrigerated and made frequently. Personally, I find this a small price to pay for the benefit of natural skin care--chemical-free and nutrient-rich.And, although I can't state with scientific certainty that the recipes actually reduce lines or make my skin healthier, I can say that I feel so much better making and using my own beauty potions that my inner radiance comes through and this is what people notice. Yes, I understand that beauty is more than skin deep, but we women know that if we feel good, we look good.Return to Beauty is nicely presented and easy to use. It includes step-by-step directions for giving yourself a facial, as well as recipes specific to the seasons, skin types, and sun signs; simple solutions for skin, hair, and nail care; pregnancy skin care--there is even a short section on skin care for men. If you're ready to invest a few extra minutes of your time and energy into feeling and looking good, try some of the recipes and see the results for yourself. You're worth it.

Return To Beauty is a excellent book to create your own beauty recipes! The book is divided up into 6 parts.Part 1) Seasons Part 2) Sun SignsPart 3) Simple SolutionsPart 4) PregnancyPart 5) How To Give Yourself A FacialPart 6) No Frills For MenNarine Nikogosian starts her book out with a wonderful although quick introduction, allowing the readers a peek into her philosophy about natural skin care. The photos in the book are just lovely! I have two other beauty recipe books (see bottom of review) and neither of those books have a single photo! The beautiful photographs are definetly a bonus treat, as well as the way the recipes are displayed, using larger print than the other two books that I own (and love). The most important aspect that makes Return To Beauty a excellent book has to be how EASY the recipes are! I have had to buy sticky notes to add to so many of the recipes so I can find them again quickly. The recipes use everyday items you probably already have in your kitchen.MayonnaiseLemonsYougurtCottage cheeseHoneyButterMilkSaltTea bagsOlive oilEggsFlourVinegarJuicesTo just name a few...and some of the ingredients I didn't have and had to purchase are:VodkaCognacAlmond oilShredded coconutSparkling mineral waterRose oilCornstarchCherriesHeavy creamFigsThere are so many recipes that just use two or three simple ingredients and not one of the recipes requires very much effort at all! The alcohol recipes center on facial toners and masks and require very little alcohol so I just bought the tiny travel bottles and they last a long time. It's a wonderful book that I have loved using and I highly recommend it to others of all ages!!The other two books that I own and love are:The Beauty Cookbook: 200 Recipes to Make Your Kitchen Your Spa -- for Your Face, Your Body and Your HairAndBabushka's Beauty Secrets

I bought this book and tried many recipes.And....I mean, they work, but it's a little bit of a hassle, you need to have all this produce ingredients ready, have the time to mix them up,etcetera...The book is beautiful and the pictures inside are gorgeous, but the recipes are a little impractical. It looks like it was written for women who have a lot of time on their hands.I'll give it three stars because some of the recipes actually work, and if you don't have money to buy a cream, and you happen to have the ingredients at home to do youself a facial, it's good to go...But I don't have the time to make this recipes or treatments on a daily basis.

I'm really glad I purchased this book. I have a lot of make your own beauty product books that promised to have recipes for skin care with ingredients right out of the kitchen, and they did but failed to mention all the other exotic ingredients that I'd never even heard of that had to be added in with it. This book however made that promise and didn't fail. I got the book and made a mask the same night and have bookmarked others I want to try, and guess what? I already have everything I need right in my kitchen! This is the first book of this kind that I'll really get a lot of use out of.

I tried several recipes and I have to say that some are good and others don't work with the machine suggested and some are awful. For example the good one recipe is yogurt as a moisturizer and as acne facial cleanser (lemon juice and baking soda and water) and the ones that don't work with the machine suggested, most of the moisturizers suggest blending very small amount in a blender too small to even work in that case I used a small food processor for the purpose. And for the awful, I tried the shampoo for normal hair and it left my hair greasy and smelling literally like sour milk!! the masks are ok and the cleansers are ok as long as you use it without sunscreen and makeup on. Great read and interesting recipes but keep in mind they are a hit or miss.

This book, for the most part, is very practical in its approach to making various creams, cleansers and toners. It doesn't require exotic ingredients that wouldn't normally be available in the local organic food store. Some of the recipes are a little over the top (use of rose petals or raspberries-a little expensive). I also really like the explanations of how each ingredient works on the skin and why. This really is an informative book and I highly recommend it.

#23,044 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Ray comes across someone down on their luck one night and takes her to ER to be checked out. Sylvia is actually a doctor whose brand new ex just left her, without ID, money or extra clothing. This story has the suspense element and starts up pretty quickly. Much of the story is between these two, and her getting over her brother’s death years ago, or the guilt thereof and the suspense angle of who could be after her. We get to see the other Macalister siblings and spouses in this one too, though a minor part. Easy to get into and keep the pages turning.

Ray rescues Sylvia thinking shes a drunk rather than a women who slipped in puddle of beer and was stranded by her ex boyfriend . Sylvia carries immense guilt for her brother's death and can' t believe someone as wonderful as Ray wants her. Alexa weaves a love story filled with our need to rely on the Lord and accept His forgiveness and trust He will guide us if we listen. Can't wait for Elizabeth's story.

After reading the first 2 books in the series, I couldn't wait for this one to come out. It was incredible! I am not normally a big fan of suspense, but I do like how Alexa handles it in her stories.

All the books in this series were wonderful. After the first one on Melinda, I had to read the others and I must admit that the books were all interesting. I wish they were longer though with a little more suspense.

A great book that kept me wondering what was coming next. DR. Sylvia Barron was stranded at a gas stop by her boyfriend and she doesn't have her purse or clothing. Then she falls in front of store and gets hurt plus lands in beer.Ray Macalister a nurse that was there came to her rescue and took her to the hospital. He took her back to his place because she had no where to go. His sisters who was in the last two books were not happy. They didn't trust her because of the way she looked. The story goes on with them becoming friends and Sylvia opening up to Ray about her past which she hasn't done before to anyone. Mean while someone is out to hurt her. Sylvia is sad about her past and trying to work through it an Ray is trying to help her. Showing that there is a person who cares and helping her to get back to trusting God and seeing He was with her all along. It gets very interesting when they keep seeing a black car and she gets threats on her life. I am not going to tell you more for I don't want to tell the wonderful story. All I can say is only always trust in God.Enjoy your read for this is a wonderful book.

Alexa Verde’s book Seasons Of Amor:Ray is a amazing man who is always helping people in need. When he leaves the gas station he is shocked to see the lady on the ground moaning. Sylvia can’t believe that Kent would just take off and leave her stranded. When she falls in a muddy pool of beer she can’t get up. Sylvia can’t believe the way Ray just picks her up out of the mud to help her. The characters in this book are all very special people who feel like your family. You won’t be able to stop reading this book. This book is truly a wonderful inspirational story. I had the honor to review this book for the author for a honest review. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.

Both elements combine in this story of God's amazing gift of second chances. I have enjoyed reading the continuing saga of the four Macalisters as each finds their forever love. I can't wait for Elizabeth's story! Did we get a hint that it might be the P.I.?

Faith filled suspense story by a super author. Great addition to the series. The meeting of Sylvia and Ray was a surprise, but sure works for this story. Clean and spiritual. Highly recommend. I received a copy from the author. Opinions are my own.

Hope it's true that Tom Hanks is developing something for HBO based on this book as it's a tale well told of how a man with deep family roots in the furniture manufacturing industry didn't cash in his chips as cheap imports flooded the US market. He fought back to keep factories going and save US jobs. The author doesn't paint him as a saint or someone with all the answers. If you don't know someone who has lost a manufacturing job because it went overseas or if you don't think those jobs matter to you personally, read this book. Millions of people have lost their jobs as US plants have closed. And those job losses affect everyone in this country one way or another. Reading about international trade agreements may sound like a cure for insomnia. But the author simplifies what happens when unfair trade practices by other countries leave people in this country with no way to feed their families. The book traces the history of the good, bad and ugly of furniture making in the South from its beginnings to the current day when some people question whether it can survive. If everyone doesn't support US manufacturing, lots of other jobs will keep going with it. This book isn't dry statistics about imports and exports. It's about real people struggling to survive and how US industry has to get creative to make that happen.

Having had John Bassett my boss at National Mtn Airy as I had the Northwest territory I was interested in what happened to him in keeping a bedroom furniture co. going with overseas factory competition. Also what has happened in furniture mfg. industry in the 2000's after I retired. I only hope he can keep the co. going. JAY BURMESTER EAST WENATCHEE, WASH.

Speaking as a life long furniture professional, this book captures the times and challenges of not only the furniture industry, but many American industries during this period. And John Bassett was, in real life, just as depicted in his book. A strong leader, and determined to stand fast against the tides of globalization. What you read is, literally, what you get with JB.

Great book!! All should read especially those in their 20's and 30's!! Business 101!

After reading Factory Man, the book about written about JBIII by Beth Macy, he said he liked the book, but complained to the author that there wasn't enough "how to" in the book, which was by design. So what did he do? He set about writing his own book, part "Who Moved My Cheese" and part General Patton.Kudos to John Bassett and Ellis Henican for articulating his business principles and sharing his view of what it will take to bring manufacturing jobs back to the US, as well as providing a primer for any entrepreneur who wants to be successful in a tough market. If you are looking for a simple, patriotic plan for America, this book is for you. It's not complicated, but makes for a good read.

For any business person who has faced the ever-changing global market, "Making It In America" is a must read. For the person who is trying to start a business in America, "Making It In America" is a must read. While many American businesses sold out to overseas owners, John Bassett remained strong in his vision to keep jobs in America. His 12-point plan for successful leadership, which is the focal point of this book, can be applied to any business or organization. After reading this book, it is easy to understand why John Bassett is a great leader in the furniture industry. Thank you, Mr. Bassett, for showing the Hong Kong factory owner that not all Americans are "the greediest people he ever met."

A great common sense approach to the basics of business, that somehow many in this country have forgotten. If you build it in America, they will come. Written by one of the best from "the greatest generation" who would be happy to pass the title of "greatest" to the next generation.

Great new read about the "Do" & Don'ts" in operating a business and surviving in today's difficult economic environment.

#28,119 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is an astonishing book. Including the glossary and notes, it tops 600 pages. I am not a fast reader, and I read it in a week. I should say at the outset that I had a personal interest in the material, having lost a partner to AIDS in Boston in 1984 and many friends in the subsequent years. This book has frequently been compared to Randy Shilts' "And the Band Played On" but is more tightly focussed on the formation of ACT UP and its impact on the ultimate development of life-saving drugs. Despite a staggering amount of detail, I was never bored and rarely confused, a testament to Mr. France's meticulous presentation of material. While it often reads as a chronicle of failures, both by government officials and pharmaceutical companies, the author never lets the reader move away from a connection to real people doing deeply committed work under the worst possible circumstances. I cared about them personally and ached for their suffering as year after year passed with only AZT, a drug toxic for most patients and with terrible side effects, to turn to. I hope that there is a special place in Hell for Burroughs-Wellcome executives, Ronald Reagan, Archbishop John O'Conner and Senator Jesse Helms, people who intentionally held back progress on finding a cure for AIDS for their own financial benefit or out of some perverted religious belief.I bought a copy of the documentary of the same name last year and was deeply moved. There is a visceral difference between reading about Peter Staley scaling the entrance to buildings at the FDA and the NIH and seeing a video taken of the event. I watched the dvd again after finishing the book and felt devastated all over again. Reading the book had deepened my understanding of what happened and my love for the people involved, and seeing them on film, so many of whom died, broke my heart. It's worth having your heart broken to read this book.

Just finished this book. It was so good. I've read "and the band played on" and loved it but this was much better researched especially because it was done with 20/20 hindsight and not when AIDS was still killing tens of thousands of people per year. The book was mostly focused on what happened in NYC and Act-up (Vs. SF based.) What ACT UP! did was truly astounding. They changed the way drug trials were done, the speed of them, how people were found for them, got companies to do parallel studies without placebos for those who didn't meet the stiff criteria of official studies, and most importantly, broke down the secretive doors of pharmaceutical companies and got them to involve People with AIDS in all sort of ways, to the benefit of the companies and the people who needed the drugs. It's hard to believe what it was like back then PWA's when it was basically a death sentence for everyone.... Hard to fathom what they went through-the utter despair when dozens and dozens of friends and lovers would die a year. And the way gay people were treated and discriminated against-it is so unbelievable. And the horrible way Reagan and the Republicans (and to a large extent, Democrats too) in congress ignore AIDS for 9 years because they disliked gayness and thought that AIDS was god's retribution. It was an enthralling and horrifying book. Very well researched, a little slow in the beginning but it really gets interesting about 1/3 of the way through.

David France has been involved in the New York gay scene since, by coincidence, almost precisely the time that the AIDS epidemic was first noted in the press in July 1981. So, aside from the previous decade following the 1969 Stonewall Riots, as a journalist he saw the plague and the gay community’s devastation by it and fight against it first hand. In 2012, he wrote, produced and directed a film documentary by the same name that was so outstanding it was nominated for an Academy Award. For me, that documentary remains, even since this book, uniquely incredible and a hard act to follow. It is a brilliantly compelling and moving account, with a lot of archival footage, of the ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) movement composed of mostly AIDS sufferers from its March 1987 founding. By that point, tens of thousands of mostly homosexual men in the U.S. had already died horrible deaths, everyone infected was doomed to the same fate, and there was no effective cure or treatment in sight. But ACT UP’s highly publicized civil disobedience actions at the White House gates, the National Institutes of Health and elsewhere and its success in gaining inclusion on official boards evaluating experimental treatment options, is widely credited, including by the nation’s foremost public health official Dr. Anthony Fauci, with playing a critical and indispensable role the discovery of an effective treatment by 1996.In late 1996 when, having been an early post-Stonewall gay activist myself, I learned that Time magazine had named Dr. David Ho, a long-time AIDS researcher, its ‘Person of the Year,’ I breathed a deeper sigh of relief than for any time in the previous 15 years. It was an affirmation that, indeed, a life-saving treatment for the hideous AIDS had been found. Dr. Ho is not even mentioned in France’s documentary or book because to France’s mind, and undoubtedly in reality, it was the ACT UP activists and the researchers willing to work with and learn from them who finally came up with the right combination of protease inhibitor treatments that produced an immediately efficacious and enduring life-saving treatment. From France’s work it is shown how without the input of a faction of ACT UP that formed itself as the Treatment Action Group (TAG) to work on technical research issues the existing efforts whether by the National Institutes of Health or private pharmaceutical companies were fragmented and out of touch with one another.Despite annual world conferences on AIDS research, “there was no global strategy,” so TAG members had to devise a “National AIDS Treatment Agenda” to put the disparate research efforts into one comprehensive strategy. It was in 1995, after the first discovery of the “protease inhibitor” that an “activist- proposed drug design” combining therapies was introduced, and almost immediately began to work wonders. Within 30 days, very ill patients became symptom free, Fauci said, calling it “a Lazarus effect.”The treatment was provided to hundreds of thousands of AIDS patients in the U.S. and then overseas, especially in Africa, and began saving literally millions of lives. As with his film documentary, France does an excellent job of telling the story in his book, including with some key information the documentary didn’t include, such as exactly how ACT UP came to be formed in 1987. Earlier activist split offs from existing gay organizations, like the Lavender Hill Mob and the Swift and Terrible Retribution Committee, had begun “zaps,” spontaneous street theater and office takeover demonstrations, following a solemn but massive, 200,000-strong June 1986 Gay Pride parade that was greeted with newspaper headlines reporting that a Supreme Court decision had ruled 5-4 to uphold a Georgia gay sex ban. That December, an anonymous effort pasted lower Manhattan with three thousand black posters with an inverted pink triangle and the words “Silence = Death.”Larry Kramer, having been on a hiatus after the highly-successful production of his hard-hitting AIDS-themed play, “The Normal Heart,” decided it was time to spark something new.Ah yes, Larry Kramer! This man had enraged the official gay community in 1978 with the publication of his best selling novel, Faggots, because it exposed the depths of sexual promiscuity and depravity that much of the New York and other urban gay scenes had descended to by then. He was subjected to a massive display of denial and angry insistence on keeping such “secrets” away from the outside world. The leadership, such as it was, of the so-called gay movement then was composed mostly of gay sex club, bathhouse and bar owners, many with ties to the Mob, in an alliance with the sex-addicted often-nightly patrons of their establishments insisting that gay liberation was synonymous with massive amounts of anonymous sex.Kramer was like an Old Testament prophet sounding an alarm. Many never forgave him from that time forward, but the evidence is clear from the wider corpus of his work that he was motivated not out of hate, anger or personal repression, but out of a deep love and compassion for gay people. (It is relevant that science learned just this year that the HIV virus that causes AIDS was present in the blood of many gay men collected in the early 1970s, at the time the “sexual revolution” first broke out. The HIV did not enter the picture in the mid-1970s, as previously thought, by introduction to the U.S. probably from Africa. It had been here much earlier, and sexually-active gay men were playing Russian roulette since 1970 not only with all the other STDs of the day, but unbeknownst to them, also a virus that would wind up killing at least 600,000 of them.)This was shown when the first public reports of a gay “cancer” was first reported in July 1981. It was Kramer to leaped into action to organize a grass roots political response, the formation of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis. But in a subculture swimming with petty jealousies and fear, Kramer’s insistence on strident action was too much, and he became marginalized.Still, that only led to his authorship and production of a quasi-autobiographical “The Normal Heart,” the powerful play that exposed the plight of sick and dying gay men, and a pathetic lack of government response, to a much wider audience. Then, in 1987, when the effort against AIDS was going absolutely nowhere, it was Kramer, again, who provided the spark for the formation of ACT UP that ultimately got the gay community activated to get the results it needed.Due to a last-minute cancellation, Kramer got to fill the program for the March 1987 meeting of a monthly speaker series at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center. This was the opportunity he needed, and he didn’t miss it. He organized an array of activists to show up. “I’m going to try to organize a civil disobedience group,” Kramer said to a friend, as France quoted him. “I’m putting friends in the audience as plants. When I call for people to help me organize a demonstration, I need you to stand up and join in and rabble rouse.”Some 250 gay men showed up. As France wrote, “Kramer’s savage oratory power, honed over his years of screed writing, swelled as he read his prepared remarks. ‘If my speech tonight doesn’t scare the s*** out of you, we’re in trouble,’ he told them. ‘I sometimes think we have a death wish. I think we must want to die. I have never been able to understand why we have sat back and let ourselves literally be knocked off man by man without fighting back. I have heard of denial, but this is more than denial – it is a death wish!”France wrote that the presentation morphed the group into a “Capraesque town hall meeting” full of energy and animated talk. He wrote, “The fuse caught fire…Kramer’s strategy had worked. Something brand new was afoot.”Still, people accused Kramer of wanting to become famous for this effort. It is a sad thing, but a reality that people who can only think in terms of such things, or in terms of hate or vengefulness, can only assign similar motives to others. To an observer like me, it is clear that everything Kramer did, including his stridency, was done more out of love than anything else. The world still won’t acknowledge that, in the context of how bad the AIDS plague was, he was right from the start and almost all the others were wrong.France is ambiguous about Kramer in his book. On the one hand, he wrote in his introduction, “No individual was more responsible for galvanizing the AIDS movement than Kramer. His plays, books and essays over the years pushed the gay community to demand that the world take notice.”But in another place he claimed that Kramer did almost more harm than good, although not with the viciousness of gay blogger Andrew Sullivan in his review of France’s book in the New York Times Book Review of Nov. 27. Sullivan wrote, “There was the despised Larry Kramer, fresh off excoriating gay men’s sex lives in his novel, Faggots, who bravely confronted the core problem of transmission, but who also displayed a personal viciousness that derailed the movement as much as galvanized it.”In his book, France underscored his ambiguity about Kramer by quoting a gay leader who wrote a highly critical letter to Kramer, saying, “You should beg the forgiveness of every gay man who you have caused pain,” but then credited Kramer “with raising the visibility of the epidemic like no one else by working to become, ‘like Goethe, the personification of an era much linked with sadness and death.’”The most serious shortcoming of France’s work is in his effort at applying pop psychology to Kramer and others in the struggle, saying Kramer owed his stridency to a “stern father,” and his tendency “to see the world as a battle between aloof parent figures and rejected children.”How about the fact that an entire generation of gay men were being wiped out by the most heinous of incurable diseases being his motivator? The pop psychology is just so much BS and really a terrible take-down of Kramer’s motives. There is a valid point to the charge of “tone policing” that feminists are increasingly talk about. It is a silencing tactic that protects privilege and silences people who are hurting, often targeting women. (In Keith Bybee’s book, How Civility Works, he notes that feminists, Black Lives Matter protesters, and anti-war protesters have been told to “calm down and try to be more polite.” He argues that tone policing is a means to deflect attention from injustice and relocate the problem in the style of the complaint, rather than to address the complaint.”) Kramer continues to be a huge target of this kind of “tone policing.”Surely, the heroic role of many in the ACT UP struggle cannot be ignored, the work of Peter Staley, Bob Rafsky, Mike Harrington, Greg Consalves, Spencer Cox, Jim Eigo, Ann Northrup, Iris Long, David Barr, Derek Link, Gregg Bordowitz, Bill Bahlman, and of course, their predecessors like Joe Sonnabend, Michael Callen, Richard Berkowitz, Mathilda Krim and many others.Something that France’s book does not include is the added level of pain above the medical and physical pain of AIDS victims, worst of all being the brutal and complete rejection of young AIDS victims by their own parents and families throughout that period.France tells the stories of a couple AIDS victims who were being cared for by their parents as they expired. But there were many, many more cases of total rejection of AIDS victims by their own parents, and left to die with an emptiness in their hearts even more painful than their physical illness.Even today, the rejection of young gay men and women by their families is heartbreaking, with an estimated full 25 percent of homeless persons being young gays. The story of ACT UP is not so much about glorified heroism as about a resolve to live. Staley said when he and others were about to toss the ashes of loved ones over the White House fence in 1992 that, “Some are making something beautiful out of the epidemic, but there’s nothing beautiful about a box of ashes and bone chips. There’s no beauty in that.”When France wrote of the real breakthrough being found in 1996, he confessed, “It had been many years since I had cried – maybe I hadn’t shed a tear since Doug’s memorial service – but now tears rolled down my cheeks. When I caught my breath again, it came in sobs. Was it over? Was the long nightmare passed?”“Tears filled Spencer Cox’s eyes,” he wrote. “’We did it,’ he whispered to the person sitting beside him. ‘We did it. We’re going to live.’” I knew the feeling, as every gay man in the nation must have that day.Final point, I suggest that France’s work be examined from the standpoint of what he doesn’t say about how a new plague might be avoided.

This is a very fine attempt by the author to pen about the personality on whom little has been written by Western authors.Overall this is a compelling read and a fairly comprehensive socio-political analysis of the Middle East region. I would highly recommend this biography.

Excellent Reading. One of the greatest kings that ever lived. The information is enticing and like the author states himself, he tried to make everything exact as he could.I recommend purchasing this book for your own library and research. I myself wish King Faisal was amongst us today. You won't be disappointed with the literature.

truely great book
