the only prior experience i brought to this reading of a graphic novel was 'jimmy corrigan: the smartest boy in the world,' which is why amazon recommended it to me. ultimately, i think that the genre is all that connects them. this book is much more intimate, personal, passionate, and chilling. all things 'smartest' wanted to be but only got 4/5's of the way there.i myself am an epileptic and there are fewer diseases that this book relates to than just ones that are 'out of control.' the effects of epilepsy are far more psychological than physical. where a cancer victim is at the mercy of the disease and body, the epileptic, like many schizophrenics is affronted by dark and sinister shadows, lurking demons. however, it's one thing for an epileptic to be able to voice this. i find it amazing that David B., the brother and author, found so many ways of accurately depicting the demons' influence and sympathetically already fighting in his own way to overcome them with the tools of a child. both graphically and through the course of the story you learn of the ways the family and David B. adapt to confront the shadow, though the epilepsy ultimately remains intractable.another thing about this book that opened my eyes, is that for the epileptic, the story is told in first, second, and third person. for the family member, where it may always seems superficially to be a disease to which the family remains a third party, one may realize the struggles endured that were ignored. if i were to ask my mother how it felt for her to go through many of the struggles faced in this book, she might not think much of them. but upon reading and seeing the struggles afresh, she might realize that she had much more at stake than anyone, even herself, gave her credit.this book is so moving and deep because of David B.s ability to so comprehensively annotate each of five family members struggle. the autobiographical aspect takes a backseat to the chronicling of a dark disease that is never cured, much like alcoholism, but only ever treated and hoped against. the ending is particularly potent on this point: it is a tenuous grasp that is held to consciousness, and a varying relationship any of us have to reality, but when we hold together we arent scattered below. .mfg

None of the individuals portrayed in this story emerge intact, including the author David B. I was left with the impression that either David B. is so fully aware of this that he purposely (and perhaps brilliantly) avoided communicating how messed up everyone in his family is, or that they are so messed up that he has no idea how messed up they are. Clearly he is angry at his family for spending his entire childhood revolving around his brother and his illness, but that's perfectly normal for someone who has grown up with a seriously ill family member. But David B's self awareness seems to end there. The damage is more extreme and disturbing because his family's approach to illness and guilt is more extreme and disturbing. This book is not "light reading" in any sense - There were times when I was only able to take in a page or two in a sitting. The art is so rich and complex and the story is so complicated, I needed to take breaks or I wouldn't know what I was reading anymore. The book is brilliant, beautifully translated from French, and like nothing I've ever read.

Excellent graphic novel. The visual style looks almost like a relief or cave painting. Unlike superhero comics it doesn't make excessive use of perspective, and instead flattens everything into a very 2D feel. The story is moving and very frank about how siblings can mistreat each other, even (or especially) in the face of illness.

A bit hard to read. Lettering is too small and pictures are too packed in.

I'm not usually a reader of graphic novels, but this book does a great job using illustrations to help tell the story. This book is a heartbreaking story about a young boy with schizophrenia and his family's unrelenting pursuit to find treatment. This book gives great insight to the social aspect of disease, how it can affect not only the person with it, but also their friends and family.

Not as interesting as I expected.

A wonderfully rich tapestry memoir story filled with Magical Realism, family feud, and wonder. The characters are interesting, and the scenes are gorgeous. Only, one thing prevents this work from reaching legendary status. The author simply doesn't give you time to breathe. David B. serves up such wonderful imagery. Course after course of incredible moments, and intriguing anecdotes. But it feels like more of an onslaught than a feast. Beautiful? Sure. Would I read it again? Doubtful.

This was a challenge to read because it took a reasonable personal struggle and dragged it through a rather dull account of the author's life. The black and white art is phenomenal.

The book explains the connections we all have. However, this book is really about love: the author’s love for her family, especially her husband, Rob. However, her love spreads out to encompass the reader. As you read the book, you feel her invitation to the reader to live more fulfilling lives by tapping into the reader’s soul. She wants the reader to reach his or her potential in love, work, and parenting. She wants us to find our calling. This book is not mere New Age theology; rather Rabbi Levy taps into ancient Jewish texts and thought to illuminate how the soul can be tapped into to create a more meaningful and successful life. Furthermore, she wants us to tap into our pain to find our path. Her story about the biologist is a great example. Some stories will make you cringe. It was painful to read about the woman who killed a man while she was reaching for her phone. Other stories will make you laugh. I could not help laughing at the story about how she and her husband forgot that they left her car at her in-laws. The book is an easy read. I read the book over three evenings before going to bed. So, if you read the book quickly to find out what prompted Einstein to write a letter to Rabbi Marcus; I would recommend that you keep the book at your bedside. Much of the book were Rabbi Levy’s sermons to her congregation. I am fortunate to attend her services. I can tell you that each sermon caused the congregation to think and reflect. In fact, one sermon caused me to change my life. You can read it in “Pregnant Forever.” Each chapter is a world in itself, and I would recommend you picking up the book and read or reread a chapter that reflects your concerns at the moment. Highly recommended.

I love this book. I agree it was about the impact of Einstein's words to a man the author searched to find only to be further inspired by his story is the point of the title. The author's story is truly one of great challenge and inspiration. When she speaks of the soul it touched my heart. I often forget to hear what the soul wants by going within or in a small miracles I forget to be grateful for each day. Her words are a reminder that there is purpose in searching for our souls. Like her other books, I am again inspired.

Before I was through the first chapter of Rabbi Levy's Einstein and the Rabbi, the book became my traveling companion. It went with me on every errand, doctor's appointment and church. I completed reading the book in three days. I plan on having a women's reading group when the paperback becomes available in September.Rabbi Levy has touched the core of what it means to be human and made in the image and likeness of God in language "others can understand." Bless her for sharing her story and helping others to enter into the mystery of the Soul. It is a book I will use as a resource in classes at St Thomas University. I am currently reading Levy's To Start Again and just finished reading Hope Will Find You. I found a contemporary author who shines light in the darkness in a world that is full of chaos and dualism.

I do botanical painting and don't always have fresh flowers for reference-- or my specimens die before I finish my representation. Thus, this book provides a handy reference. It also informs the artist as to what is typical of a various flower forms. It is always in my painting bag.

The books are out of print and I know there are sources on line to find pictures that artists can copy. The thing I like is having a book. I like to flip from page to page pulling together my own combination. The pictures give clear shots of different types of flowers. It's a great resource for my library and I am completely sure the photos are all free to use.

some of the flower pics are truncated and doesn't show the entire bloom and nearest leaves

The used copy of this book I purchased had more sun fading than I expected. The pictures appear a strange color, not vibrant at all. If I were purchasing it again I would choose a better quality if it was available. I feel I paid too much for a poor quality of the used book.

This is an excellent reference book. Beautifully done. highly recommend this.

I really felt that this is NOT a prep for an exam. At the end there are only 100 questions and answers. The exam has over 400 possible questions and I feel slighted. That's also forgetting about the rambling in the main text that never really calls out important information, relative to preparing for the exam.

My 15 year old has developed a passionate interest in amateur radio and I'm so thankful to have found this prep book. He found it to be a great intro to the overall topic. Based on what I've read of it, I'm sure the pointers are enough to make sure he'll successfully pass his written test. I found the flow of the book easy enough to follow and it answered all the questions I had.

The author uses a different way studying for the exam and this book was the best aid I have used and i took paid online courses but things just didn't click and seeing the wrong answer over and over makes no sense and the way this book is written really works well for me and the exam questions and answers are clearly written in book form and your learning as you go along and i found it a very enjoyable read that flowed well and it's not filled with tons of useless data but just enough to enjoy "the story" After you read the book form of the answers you then reinforce your knowledge with the correct answers only section and i highly recommend it, and for reasons you'll learn when you read the book, I recommend it as your only study guide.

This book will help you learn and understand more about Amateur Radio. Be able to know Ham Radio and as a beginner I will definitely recommend this book as guide because the book was written in a very simple way for better and easier understanding.

One of the late Carl Sagan’s hallmark qualities was to engage in speculation to a degree that was unusual for a rigorous scientist. While this sometimes resulted in largely unnecessary scorn and mockery from his fellow scientists, his honest skepticism combined with his open-mindedness also led to some of the most memorable popular science writing of our times. These qualities are on full display in this fascinating book, written in 1977 . Sagan tackles a topic that is far from his expertise – the evolution of human intelligence – and largely succeeds in presenting highly thought-provoking theses for us to ponder. Much of the book discusses what was then frontier research in neuroscience, but what makes it different are Sagan’s regular speculations.The book tries to make sense of two important facts about the human brain: our strikingly different cognitive abilities relative to other animals and the interplay between emotion and reason. Sagan is quite upbeat about chimp intelligence and he spends a sizable part of the book talking about experiments that reveal chimps’ prowess in using sign language. He also talks about the mysterious communication used by whales and dolphins that still defies comprehension. Clearly apes can come quite close to using the kind of simple vocabulary that humans do, so why are humans the only ones which actually crossed the language barrier, profiting from breakthrough linguistic inventions like recursive embedding and complex sentence construction? Sagan advances a chilling and all too likely hypothesis, that humans killed off apes who they thought came dangerously close to mimicking their linguistic capabilities. Given how closely language is tied to human intelligence, it then ensured that humans would be the dominant species on the planet; chimps, gorillas and orangutans were presumably saved because they lived deep inside the inaccessible jungle. Sagan’s discussion of animal intelligence hems uncomfortably close to ethical discussions about the killing of animals that are still so pertinent; what gives us the right to clearly assign personhood to a one-month-old fetus but not to a two-year-old chimpanzee, to have serious qualms about terminating the life of the former while cheerfully ending the life of the latter? Coming on the heels of this comparison is Sagan’s commonsense (in my opinion) take on abortion: he tries to reach a compromise by arguing that it should be unethical to kill a human fetus after it develops the first rudiments of a cerebral cortex, presumably the one thing that distinguished humanity from other species. Later work would probably cast some doubt on this assertion, since reptiles have also now been found to possess cortical cells.This part provides a good segue into the even more interesting part of the book which deals with some fascinating speculations on the reptilian origins of human intelligence. Sagan’s fulcrum for this discussion is a theory by psychiatrist Paul McLean who divided the brain into three parts (the “triune brain”). At the top is the uniquely human cerebral cortex which controls thought, reason and language. The second layer is the limbic system containing structures like the amygdala which modulate emotions like anxiety. The limbic system also includes the basal ganglia and the R complex, an ancient, inherited assembly responsible for instinctive behavior, including responding to reward and punishment. Finally you have the “neural chassis” which just like a car’s chassis includes structures like the brain stem responsible for basic and primitive functions: breathing, blood flow and balance for instance.Sagan’s focus is the R complex, part of the “reptilian brain”. It is quite clear that parts of this brain structure are found in reptiles. Reptiles and mammals have an ancient relationship; reptiles originated 500 million years before human beings, so we came into a world that was full of hissing, crawling, terrestrial, arboreal and aquatic reptiles. As Sagan describes, it’s no surprise that many of the world’s foremost civilizations and religions used reptiles as key symbols; from the snake in Eden to the worship of snakes in ancient Egypt to snake symbolism in modern day India, reptiles and human have shared an indelible bond. Reptiles have also often featured as omens in dreams dictating the fates of empires and societies. Some of our reptilian connections raise mundane but fascinating questions; for instance, Sagan wonders whether the shushing sound we make for communicating silence or disapproval is a leftover of the hissing sound of reptiles.But how does this relationship contribute to our behavior? It is here that the book takes off from firm ground and starts gently gliding on speculation.Sagan’s main springboard for investigating the R complex is Roger Sperry’s seminal work in delineating the separate roles of the left and right hemispheres of the brain. As Sperry demonstrated in amazing split-brain studies, the left brain is more logical and analytical while the right is more synthetic imaginative. Sagan’s contention is that the right brain is really the essence of our reptilian origins, helping us fantasize and imagine, and it’s also a key part of what makes us creative human beings. This is most prominent when we are dreaming. Notice that dreams almost never include details of problem solving, instead they feature highly imaginative scenarios, part familiar and part alien that seem to be largely driven by our fears and hopes: are we partly seeing the world through our ancient reptilian neuroanatomy when we are dreaming, then? Are dreams holdovers from a prehistoric world where, because of inadequate shelter and protection, we had to stay alert and awake during the night to engage with snakes and crocodiles on their own terms? And in the ensuing history of civilization, did reptilian anatomy contribute to our achievements in art and music? Sagan believes that we should encourage the operation of our reptilian brain, constantly tempering its excesses with the logical constraints of the left hemisphere. This distinction between right and left brain behavior also raises very interesting questions regarding whether we can suppress one or another temporarily using drugs and surgery. In fact, it’s likely that that is partly what hallucinogens like LSD do. Here we see Sagan the Renaissance Man, trying to bridge hard scientific thinking with artistic intuition.With its bold style and engaging language, “The Dragons of Eden” won a Pulitzer Prize. While I was aware of it, I always thought it would be too dated. I now realize that I was wrong and am glad I read it; it has given me plenty of fodder to think about and has prompted me to seek out new research on the topic. The book asks fascinating questions about our kinship with other creatures and about the evolution of our brain, topics that will be of perpetual and consummate interest as long as our species is around.

He put facts into the book that impressed me as an young scientist. I first read this book while attending a management training course. The teacher recommended that I read the book as it would help me understand how the human brain functions and how it evolved to function in that way. Most people would not think about this book as a management book, but it really emphasies how the reptilian brain is over laid by the mammalian brain. The reptilian brain is where strong emotions are generated that are controlled by the overlying mammalian brain. It really helps understand the emotional issues in our lives and our interactions with other people.

As Sagan sets out early on, he is not an expert in any one subject here, but a jack of all trades. He serves as a bridge and synthesizer to the geniuses of their specialities and the rest of us. A must read. Some of the science is... dated, but on the whole his conjectures and larger narrative points are spot on

We are in 1977, Sagan is guessing about the development of human intelligence. He is thrilled that our big brains are speeding up development otherwise done by painstakingly slow natural selection. Remembering us that creativity and problem-solving are our unique skills. I am writing this in 2018 (more than 50 years later) and there are dozens books out there discussing recent explanations on the workings of the human brain. But Sagan is still very entertaining and original. For example, for him consciousness and intelligence are result of "mere" matter sufficiently complexly arranged (his own words). Therefore, there is nothing stopping us from building intelligent machines. Just our own intelligence!

Great reading, although it can tend to "ramble" in typical Carl Sagan fashion. This is an older book where the period writers wrote with orthodox precision; something I enjoy. If you like the sciences life, you will enjoy this book.

I still have my 1977 original printing of this book and wanted to re-read it after 40 years. I purchased the hard-cover version, said to be first printed in 2009, as I expected the many visuals to be easier to examine on a larger page than in the original 4"x7" format -- although I was surprised not to find some indication of the difference in page size. I just received the hard-cover book: it is exactly the same layout as the original, just with a hard cover. Bad surprise. With adequate information, I would not have made a purchase.

Virtually every American knows something about the Civil Rights movement for African Americans, but how many know anything about the fight for civil rights for people with disabilities that eventually gave us the Americans with Disabilities Act? Come on I’ll wait…Don’t worry Lennard J. Davis has you covered. In Enabling Acts, the reader learns details about the grass roots and legislative fight over the Americans with Disabilities Act. It also serves as an almost tragic case study because it was a bi-partisan effort that is seldom, if ever, seen anymore.I know the words legislative fight, don’t exactly light many readers, but Davis keeps it interesting and moving at a fairly brisk pace. The characters in Enabling Acts have a larger than life way about them from Deaf Selma to the Crawl, to the large personality of Justin Dart just to name a few. Davis struck a healthy balance between the painstaking give and take of the legislative process and the grass roots so that blends together as this clear, easy to read story of how the country’s largest minority group got it’s rights.

As a published writer and speaker - and wheelchair user for 44 years - this book fills a void in the disability field that needed Davis' thorough research. Long in the field, he undoubtedly has a network of folks still living who were intimately involved in the thousands of hours of work - and the powerful resistance efforts by those with Big Money - to get this bill to President Bush 41's desk. The detail speaks for itself; hardly a leaf is left unturned. This is a powerful example, sadly, of the superhuman teamwork, networking, and collaborative effort on many fronts that is required to get access to the "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" that ALL are "guaranteed" by the Constitution. Obviously that's not a true statement any more than the one that Baptism gives a person full membership in the Body of Christ, the Church. Both challenge us and lay before us the work that we are called to do to embrace all. This fine book details the roadmap which one "minority" took to gain access to those freedoms. (I put "minority" in quotes because last count I saw there are 52 million Americans with disabling conditions. As we live longer, one can assume that the percentage of folks with disabilities will only increase.) Davis tells us a story here, our story, all of us, ALL Americans. It's a major part of our history and still the fight goes on. In recent weeks, the Trump Administration has rolled back some of the gains of the ADA legislation.

This is an extraordinary book with layers of insights about the key ADA people, the process, the politics, the consumers with disabilities collaborations/negotiations. One of my most positive "take-aways" from this book is the reminder about the incredible leadership of Sen. Tom Hakin and his Chf Counsel, Bobby Silverstein. I highly recommend the book to those who will carry the disability civil rights ball to the next level. By p. 8 of this book the author and Sen. Harkin note that the ADA, like the Disability Treaty, would not pass the Congress today. Ask yourself why as you prepare to vote in the next election.

Many sections of this book read like an episode of The West Wing. It is a pleasant read and a solid introduction to the ADA. The extensive notes allow for further research.

Bush, worked together with a Democratic House and Senate.”I received this book as part of the Goodreads First Reads program for an honest review.One in Five of every American is disabled, so I would venture to say that unless you are a hermit, you or someone you love is disabled. It is so easy to forget what life was like for the disabled in this country before the Americans with Disabilities Act gave people their freedom. When you look at a city bus and see the ramp, take the time to realize before the ADA people in wheelchairs had to stay home. It was difficult to get jobs or go to school with everyone else. The entire story of how this act was conceived and finally passed is in “Enabling Acts” by Lennard J. Davis a man whose parents were deaf.I enjoyed reading this book because I like to see how government works when it works, and how to make it work. I also am disabled with arthritis, my husband has epilepsy, a son is autistic and a daughter suffers from Multiple Sclerosis. I don’t get SSDI and don’t expect to but it is helpful for my son and hopefully my daughter will be able to get assistance soon. I think the most important thing to come out of the ADA was the integration of the disabled into normal life. It is less costly in the long run to accommodate and allow people to contribute to this country.This is a fascinating story of the ins and outs of selling an idea and encouraging people on both sides to work together and come up with a plan that works. Sometimes this book worked like a thriller to me, as I wasn’t sure how they could do it with so much opposition from businesses and the transportation industries.There are many heartwarming stories like Senator Tom Harkin from Iowa whose older brother was deaf. In the early days, there were outside programs that would train deaf people for certain jobs and Frank was forced to become a baker. He hated the job and one day a man came in and bought his bread and asked him if he liked his job. He shook his head and this man, who happened to own a factory, asked him if he would like to come and work for him, the end of the story is that Frank did great in his factory job, because he wasn’t bothered by the noise. Soon the man hired more deaf workers. It is a great story and one of the reasons the bill was able to pass was the fact that so many people know someone with a handicap and know that they are no different from anyone else.The last chapter in this book shows me that the work is not complete. Too many businesses, state, and federal government are doing their best to undo the hard work that the ADA requires.Lennard J. Davis wrote a great book about the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it passed and became the law of the land. Anyone who loves politics will enjoy this book, anyone who is disabled or knows someone who is disabled will like this book, and if you enjoy a thriller and mystery that happens to be true, you will enjoy this book.
