A well written but essentially dishonest book, the dishonesty being the result of an imbalance. It’s clear Theroux had a vision of the south and southerners, whites in particular, before he made his excursions. In the course of his wandering he appears to have purposely went looking for (or only reports?) those encounters that support his prejudices The vast majority of people he spends time with are either minorities (blacks, native Americans, or what he calls “dot-Indians” from India) or whites he meets at gun shows. From the minorities he extracts anecdotal stories and selected histories in support of racial prejudice, while the gun-show visits allow him to present a somewhat narrow slice of southern men and women who conform to a view of them as gun-mad bubbas.Anyone both honest about and familiar with the south would have to admit there is truth in what Theroux writes. He does not deal in out-and-out falsehoods; rather he misleads by leaving out. He mentions that “progress has been made” and even touches on the phenomenon of northern blacks returning to the South because it represents a vast improvement over their lives in places like Chicago or Detroit. But he skims over this fascinating, revealing, and remarkable bit of history quickly and lightly. No where in the book do you get a true impression of the substantial and positive changes that have taken place in the South. Rather you get concentrated doses of its past history and the remnants of that history that indeed still remain.As I say, the books is dishonest because of its imbalance. One quits it, or at least I did, with a desire to say to Theroux: “Yes, yes, all you have chosen to say is true – as far as it goes; but why didn’t you give the other side of the story equal time and emphasis?” While there remain problems in the South, there is also much to admire in the way it has attempted to reform itself. It is in fact a better, more tolerant, more hopeful place than much of the rust-belt north, or even Theroux’s home state. It’s a shame, and venal of Theroux, to begin by pretending to liking the South and then to go on for over 400 pages not-so-subtly undermining it.

Take him or leave him, Paul Theroux always brings out a lot of interesting emotions in his readers. With Deep South this is no different. In fact, it is probably even more evident. I would assume that most of his readers are American. This being a very "American" book, it is perhaps too close to home for some. I can see many Americans not liking this even if they have liked Theroux's previous works. After all, it is easy to read about the negative aspects of a far away land. It is far harder to read about the issues that face locations closer to home.I remember reading The Kingdom by the Sea, which chronicles Theroux's journey around Great Britain. In the first few pages he details his observations about this island. I was living in England while I read this and I thought it was the funniest, most accurate description of the British I had ever read. The insanity of a TV license, the general tone of the people, etc. I cannot remember everything. But I felt it was totally accurate. I read these pages to several of my English friends and they got extremely upset. They thought it was total hogwash.I think Deep South might elicit a similar response from American readers. I've read nearly every non-fiction book Theroux has ever written. I've seen him speak in London and I feel I know the man pretty well. As well as you can know an author. He is constantly getting nailed for being misanthropic. However, I don't believe that's him at all. Quite the contrary. After all, why would someone spend this much time traveling and meeting new people? Surely you don't do this if you hate humanity. I don't even like to talk to people when I'm on a long flight!What Theroux is good at is simply observing what is what and writing it down. That's all. If you're offended by the way Theroux nails the Southerners for not having a great vocabulary, or being poverty stricken... well, that's how he saw it. Take it or leave it. I know of many South Africans that didn't like Dark Star Safari and thought he was full of himself and didn't do the country any justice. Perhaps that's true. I don't know.But what I do know is that I love how Theroux tells the story of the Deep South through the people he meets. This is true in all of his books. He meets quite a few people along the way and he tells their story with a keen eye for detail. He then passes this detail on to us, the reader. He's the best in the business at doing this.I for one am a fan of Deep South. I think it tells a very accurate story of what the place is like and what it's people are like. I hope Mr. Theroux writes more books about America.

Long time Paul Theroux fan here. Theroux is so good that after reading this book I traveled back home to Alabama and found I was remembering experiences as if they came from the book and not from my own experiences growing up there from age 0 to 23. I actually had to think, wait, no, what, I know this place, a catfish house for instance, from my own life not from this book. I found the criticism and the complements to the South accurate. And just in case I get branded a carpet bagger here, yes, I was somewhat annoyed that a damn Yankee could write so well about the South, but lemme tell ya'll, he did it and and did it right.

My wife and I are are discovering who our ancestors are. Both of us were delighted to discover that three of the folks that traveled to this land that was to became the United States were in our family trees that came over at the same time as the Mayflower and her sister ships. As I was hoping for additional information; all I found were the lists of their names.

Barebones and unattractive, but if all you want is a list of names and dates that you can find elsewhere on the 'net, this works. I will use it for citations in genealogy files.

Rather than buy/use this reference book on Kindlr, suggest you buy a hard copy of this book. It's too hard to use a digital version.

Let me start off by saying I am a college student starting summer classes at UNO for anatomy and phys. I am well aware that this kindle book is for children but it was great for me as a refresher of my memory! Anatomy and physiology are so broad and immense that books like these are great as a refresher and would be great for children to start learning at a young age all about the body! Especially if you see the medical field in their future ;) I do not have a kindle book but I was still able to download it super easily onto my computer to read and refresh my memory. Overall it was a great purchase; especially for kids to start learning all about the body or as a refresher for college or high school students enrolled in hard anatomy and phys classes! As a disclaimer, I received the product at a discounted rate in exchange for my honest opinion.

What I really loved about this book is that it really gave a great overview of the human body and a few of the processes our amazing bodies perform every day. It covered: The skeleton, the musculoskeletal system, the brain, skin, heart, lungs, liver, stomach, kidneys, adrenals, pancreas, red blood cells and platelets, eyes, teeth, nose, and ears.My 9 year old son found the facts listed about each system interesting. As a medical professional I enjoyed the quick facts regarding each system and thought the reading level was appropriate for beginners, but some of the labels on the pictures would be hard to pronounce if it was the first time reading them.I didn't give the book 5 stars because you can only view one page at a time in the e-book. It was obviously meant to be read side-by-side, the picture with the facts. I was also bothered that there didn't seem to be a logical organization to the book, there was not really an introduction or conclusion and the body systems were not in any particular order (for example, the heart, blood supply, red blood cell and platelet sections would have been appropriate to place together, but they were mixed in at random with the rest of the topics).Overall, if its a free e-book and it gets your kid reading about the human body, great!I received this book at a discount for an honest review, enjoy.

I found it to be redundant and confusing. I work with 3-6 yr olds and was pre-reading this for useful materials. I am really disappointed. It perpetuates several myths about brain and body functions and is absolutely not up to date. My students may be young but they still deserve accurate information. I found that their pictures are not very well labeled and clear. I can think of four different books in the shelf at school that are older and still better than this one. My kids are voracious readers and listeners and ask a thousand questions, redundancy loses their interest and not having good organizational flow makes it hard for them to remember the information.If a student asks why is our blood red, how will I explain that, where do I begin, where do end? A child who asks that basic question, usually at age 2-4 yrs old, is looking for a clear answer that provides them with a jumping off point for more questions. So I need to be able to accurately describe the entirety of the circulatory system and introduce at least one new vocabulary word per page or paragraph. These words need to be scientifically accurate as well. If a student draws a picture based on one of the pictures in the book and then labels it, it needs to be well-drawn and not too cartoony.I got this book for free for my honest opinion. My honest opinion, please update your info and streamline it.

I received this Kindle book for free using Amazon Review Trader. With that being said ...I really love this Kindle book. I work with children, mostly ones diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. I write programs to help them learn from working with at-home service providers. I've also worked as a substitute teacher for special education programs and as a private tutor for various subjects. From my experiences, and current occupation, I really love books like this. Especially for helping children learn about harder to explain topics.Why I like this book,1. This book has various types of images. The images range from very detailed and realistic pictures, to simplified pictures that are easier to gain general knowledge from.2. Fun facts. The book contains a lot of information blended in nicely among all the images.That's basically it. It has a lot of great pictures, both realistic and simplistic. Great for teaching at various learning levels. And it has a lot of good information. That's all you need and want from a book like this. And I love that it's a Kindle version, because you would almost never remember to have a book like this on hand when you needed it. It's the perfect kind of book to be able to pull up from your Kindle app, or on your Kindle in general, when you need to use it for teaching children about anatomy and physiology.

How some individuals are comforted by long-held, elaborate physical or spirituals rituals, or how many are relieved to be free of the burden of the shell, or may even be frightened in its presence.With Doughty’s voice and the influence of her and writers like her, there is a chance in our lifetimes to clear our psyches and sense of obligation, and to think clearly: What do I want? What do I want for my loved ones? It is not necessary, it is not more hygienic, meaningful or respectful to continue with the traditional American ways of death or burial. There are many paths and it’s OK.

'From Here to Eternity' is a very interesting look at the various death practices of different societies or subcultures throughout the world. It is by no means exhaustive, but gives the reader a sample of what types of ways that death is handled. My only criticism is that it reads like a series of individual chapters / vignettes and lacks somewhat of a cohesiveness that an overall examination would possess. I often was looking for ways to link the chapters beyond the overarching topic of death, and I couldn't find it. It might have been interesting to understand why the author chose the locations she did, in what order, and how she moved from one to another (other than via air travel).Overall, a really neat book well worth the read. I am looking forward to more books by this author!

I love this author and I enjoy her videos on You Tube. This books exams death practices in different parts of the world in a compassionate manner. She is really teaching us, with her humor, intelligence and her gift for telling story telling skills, to be more open and comfortable about the dying process and alternative ways to plan a funeral. She has really opened my eyes about the funeral industry and unnecessary costs. I enjoyed her first book as well.

Finished within a day of receiving it because I did not want to put it down! The writing style is fun and attention keeping while still maintaining composure. As for the content, this was a great exploration into different cultures. This is a great book to introduce oneself to multiple cultures and to a variety of aspects in the global community surrounding death. A great read that I would highly recommend!

Five stars from me! How interesting to learn about death rituals in other societies.The death practices that Americans see as "normal" versus those other cultures view as "normal" highlights just how unique each culture truly is. From the high-tech to the hands-on this book takes a look at many different customs and beliefs that are deeply meaningful to those involved, regardless of how strange they may seem to us. I love Caitlin's honest and quirky style and can hear her voice in the pages of her book. I've been following her "Ask a Mortician" YouTube series for several years and read When Smoke Gets in Your Eyes on the day it was released. I love it all! Through her hard work, dedication and encouragement of honest conversation, she is spearheading a movement in America to change the way things are "normally" done, explaining there is a healthier, better, more meaningful, MUCH more affordable way to deal with the inevitability of death and how we handle things before, during and after. This is a great read and gives such interesting insight to the world around us.

Another winner from my new favorite author! This one is rich in culture, and makes me a little jealous that these rituals have passed us for whatever reason. Love the Graham theft Parsons reference. One of my favorite movies, I secretly wish when I go that my friends would do.Thanks for another book that makes death less scary.
