Alan Pangborn is a great viewpoint character and a lot more interesting than Thad. He's a small town sheriff trying to do his job despite some crazy stuff happening.Basically, The Dark Half is Parker chasing down Donald Westlake. Since I've read all 23 Parker books Richard Stark wrote since the first time I read this, the reread was a much richer experience. I noticed some Richard Stark influence in the George Stark chapters. Also, I enjoyed the Creepshow reference, although I might have to check the timeline to see which one actually came first. "Call me Billie, everyone does!"Aside from the psychopomp business with the sparrows and Stark falling apart, The Dark Half is pretty much a crime book. It doesn't feel nearly as long winded as some of King's books and the ending didn't suck for once. George Stark was a chilling villain and since I forgot the ending, I had no idea if Thad would live or not. Four out of five stars.

The opening chapter does not pull any punches and immediately throws some gore and a shiver up your spine. We get further hits of this through the antagonist Starks point of view scattered throughout the novel, his actions are truly grotesque... I wanted to cover my eyes until it was over – but of course you can’t do that if you’re reading a book.I felt moments in-between when reading, where the narrative dragged out – embellishing characters and their back-stories, or descriptions of the landscape of the novel that slowed the pace and had me speed-reading through. Though my interest in the novel never waned. I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. Eager to learn the secrets of Thad and Stark.Thad was an interesting protagonist. I related to him immediately being a writer, and how he would get lost in a fugue of writing as if being taken over by another presence entirely. Though the smoking, drinking, patriarch stereotype that edged its way into this character annoyed me a little. But on the whole I found Thad to be intelligent, imaginative and a real risk taker; all with layers of love and compassion. I found perfection in his layers of imperfection.As I did to his wife, Liz. I frequently was reminded of the phrase about poking a mumma bear with a stick when her twin children were threatened. Liz was always the quintessential homemaker, adoring her little family and supporting her husband. But the moment any of that was endangered she roared and snapped like a wild animal. Her protective spirit and tenacity created a deep respect.Our straight-man (so to speak) being Sheriff Alan Pagborn filled the much needed critic against the supernatural. He guides the reader and grounds the narrative. The sceptic who deals only in facts and proof to form a conclusion. His added point of view helps to add credence to the theories Thad and his wife instinctively know.I found the cast interesting, fully developed and added something unique to the story line, ultimately rounding it in some realism. Though the plot itself did fell drawn out a little too long, the journey there was paced well and held my interest. Stephen King’s writing style is prominent, though more intimate than his earlier works. For a novel nearly 600 pages long, I seemed to fly through it.I was a little disappointed in the mythology of the novel – I’d read about the significance of sparrows before in Trent Jamison’s Deathworks novels, so this aspect was not a huge surprise to me; though Thad’s role felt like it was left hanging. Why had this event taken place in the first instance? Does Thad have some sort of ability? Was it Stark all along, clawing his way back from some dark place? I felt like I was wanting more resolution to this, or even a paragraph explaining why, but we didn’t get an answer.I’ve read creepier, gorier books from King. But I have to say, ‘The Dark Half’ had just enough of both to satisfy this genre without making it difficult to read. The thriller-suspense is light, but a great story to ignite the imagination of any wanna-be writer.It could have been a tad shorter, a tad more intense, and ended with more of an exclamation point, but a novel I’d be happy to recommend to all. I’d have to rank it in the top half of my King favourites.Not until I had written this review did I discover that ‘The Dark Half’ had been adapted into a film in 1993 – silly me, I should have checked, with so many of King’s titles being optioned for screen adaptations, it’s kind of a given.

Stephen King published this fine novel in 1989. The plot exhibits King's wild imagination and creative gifts! Thaddeus Beaumont is an English professor at a Maine college and the author of several novels. His most famous works star his "dark half" nom de plume creation the evil George Stark. As the novel begins Beaumont and his wife stage a fake burial for Stark in a spooky Castle Rock Cemetery in rural Maine. People magazine sends a reporter and photographer to cover the unusual literary event. The idea behind it is that Beaumont has decided to stop writing the Stark thrillers and concentrate on more substantial works using his own name. the only problem is that George Stark is alive and emerges from the cardboard tombstone covered hole in the ground! He kills everyone connected with the photo shoot and People story including several policemen who have been called on to guard the innocent victims of Stark's murder spree. The novel ends in a spectacular showdown between Thaddeus and Stark his evil dark half. Beaumont and his wife have twin children reminding us of the duality of Beaumont's life. The book is autobiographical in that Stephen King reveals thoughts on the art of writing and the entire creative process of making fictional characters come live. A dark and eerie book!Stephen King is hard to beat for excellent fiction which will keep you on the edge of your chair!

This is a horrible kindle edition. It appears to have been a hard copy that was run through OCR software without the benefit of any proofreading. This is nothing more than laziness and greed on the part of the publisher. I will not be purchasing anymore of Mr. King's work until his digital editions proofreading has improved.

This is a great Stephen King book like most I have read. The Kindle version was edited by spell check and only spell check. There are 3 or 4 words in the book that are supposed to be one thing and have been "spell checked" to another. The word "gross" is "close" and towards the end of the book one of the main characters names, "Stark" becomes "start". It isn't anything you can't figure out from context but it severely interrupts the flow of reading such a good book.

Obviously a lot of people have gotten value from this book, and so there must be something useful to it that I'm not seeing. But I personally found it to be the opposite of what I was personally looking for in a book ostensibly about writing instruction. I kept waiting for the writing instruction to occur, something about hooks, plotting, structure, POV, voice, succinct prose, different expectations for each genre, or something, anything. I eventually realized the author had no intentions of providing any specific advice, so I relaxed into it being a book about living creatively with personality disorders. I feel sympathy for people who struggle. I know it's not their fault. I want to show them love.And, I'd be interested to read about someone's unbalanced emotional state, sure, but not if it's projected onto me. I didn't identity with her descriptions about what I will feel as an author. It's not promoted as a book about her life as much as a book predicting what "you" will feel. It's prescriptive. It's targeted to the reader. It's saying this is what we will inevitably feel. And I think that is a dangerous practice. People tend to believe authority figures, and they experience what they believe they are expected to feel, via a kind of placebo effect. What our subconscious is told our subconscious can believe. What she details feeling is anything but pleasant or productive.Also, since it's listed as being about how to write, untrained readers might actually believe this is all you have to do - write messy, write passionate, write diligent, and apparently don't ever plan out the plot according to some tried and true schemata, according to research about what readers enjoy. Even experimental writers need to learn the rules in order to break them meaningfully. I've talked to readers of this book who said it threw them off for a long wasted time of writing because they gleaned from it that all you had to do was write random words without consideration for putting the correct plot points in the proper location in the Act structure.As well as being a manuscript editor, I've taught writing with universities for fourteen years. My fiction writing students are happy with my classes, and they make great improvement. I don't feel that's a bad thing. But this author boasts about how unhappy she makes her students by insisting to them that they will experience what she did, and she makes fun of them for not commenting and instead asking about getting an agent. That was somewhat a little funny if I looked at it from her POV, but it was the only moment I saw as remotely humorous. I read it as a desperately sad book overall.There is some cautionary advice not to let the ego get too involved, to strengthen the self esteem rather than depending on book feedback to provide it. If she had provided some proven, specific psychological methods of doing that, and if she demonstrated that she had that balance, herself, and what that feels like, I believe it could have been more worthwhile.

Wry writing tips from a true master, filled with hilarious patter, poignant moments, and a treasure trove of good advice. I learned to get started with short assignments, write "shitty first drafts," and denounce perfectionism (one of my major hindrances). She writes, "Perfectionism is a mean, frozen form of idealism, while messes are the artist's true friend."Ms. Lamott touches upon all kinds of subjects that writers find intriguing, such as writer's block (and writer's jealousy), the benefits of writing groups and conferences, the ups and downs of publishing, and finding your voice. I loved her writing voice - it was honest and clear-headed and self-deprecating and touching. There's one very short story she includes that literally brought stinging tears to my eyes. I still to this day find such a feat to be a miraculous gift from a writer. I also loved this little instruction on writing and life: "There's no point in writing hopeless novels. We all know we're going to die; what's important is the kind of men and women we are in the face of this." Wise words, Ms. Lamott.As writers, we tend to be navel-gazers, but the following tidbit really hit home with the selfishness of some of my writing: "Some of us tend to think that what we do and say and decide and write are cosmically important things. But they're not." After which she states, "If you don't know which way to go, keep it simple." Such good advice!Finally, she advises that writing can bring you great pleasure in the midst of undeniable pain. And maybe, just maybe, you can write something that actually makes a difference: "Against all odds, you have put it down on paper, so that it won't be lost. And who knows? Maybe what you've written will help others, will be a small part of the solution. You don't even have to know how or in what way, but if you are writing the clearest, truest words you can find and doing the best you can to understand and communicate, this will shine on paper like its own little lighthouse." I think it's safe to say that now I want to be her best friend.

I have never wanted to take advice from anyone about writing. I have never read other books about this, and I have actively avoided workshops or classes. Behind this there is vanity and pride, and the idea that writing must come natural to me and it is an intimate process, secret and sacred and mysterious. But I have a problem. I have been in a rut for three years now. I haven’t written anything worthwhile, and it hurts so much. I chose this book because I liked the reviews. I liked it a lot. I think it’s the best way in which you can help other people write. As expected, there are no magic formulas (anyone who claims so is a charlatan), only a couple of simple, yet helpful exercises, but mostly just comments about writing and an introspection on a writer’s mind and life. What I take away from the book are the ideas about honesty, humility, and constant and passionate effort. It helped a lot. Anne Lamott is funny and sincere, the kind of voice that you can trust and makes you say “you know what, I’m gonna listen to you”. I also admired her warmth. I have been thinking a lot about feelings and ideas mentioned in the book, and I’ve been repeating myself some stuff, mantra-like. I feel I know what to do to become a better writer, and also a better person. Right now, the most valuable lesson was that vanity is useless and persistence is the key. It might sound simple, but it means a lot to me. Â

My son is a big Overwatch fan and as such he loves this calendar. He says it features a lot of the new characters so it is quite worthwhile. i gave it to him as a stocking stuffer at Christmas. I love the fact that it is put together very well. Quality paper and printing.

The field changes so quickly that no one book can cover everything, but there are a few reference titles in my own library that I use more than others....DINOSAURS: THE MOST COMPLETE, UP-TO-DATE ENCYCLOPEDIA FOR DINOSAUR LOVERS OF ALL AGES may look like a book designed for children, but (as the title says) this is presently the most complete and up-to-date book on dinosaurs you can get your hands on. All the major groups of dinosaurs are covered, reconstructed in eye-popping colors by Luis Rey, and it is a good resource to quickly become familiar with dinosaur diversity. The author of the book, paleontologist Thomas Holtz, has also been updating the list of known dinosaur genera on an online appendix, which is one of the most useful resources available to those wanting to keep up with new discoveries.

Over the last few months, I bought and read several books about dinosaurs. This book, Thomas Holtz and Luis Rey's Dinosaurs: The Most Complete, Up-to-Date Encyclopedia, was my best purchase by far. It is wonderfully written, wonderfully organized, and the illustrations are lovely. Not only does Holtz have a gift for introducing and describing the standard features of dinosaur paleontology in clear and accessible prose, he does a fabulous job of explaining the REASONS why paleontologists have arrived at their conclusions. In other words, in addition to learning about dinosaurs, a novice reader will likely walk away with a greater understanding of how one performs sound scientific reasoning.Many reviewers have pointed out that the isn't exactly pitched to younger children. That's probably correct. But of course, books are never "one size fits all." As a middle-aged adult wanting to learn about dinosaurs for the first time, this book was ideal for me. But I'm confident that a bright and motivated 10-year old will find the text equally enriching.For readers who might struggle with this sort of comprehensive and detailed treatment of dinosaurs -- for very young readers in particular -- I recommend Lessem and Tempesta's National Geographic Kids Ultimate Dinopedia: The Most Complete Dinosaur Reference Ever. It's a more straightforward encyclopedia, primarily made up of two-page entries on various dinosaur genera: usually a very nice illustration on the left page, and on the right page, a short and manageable text highlighting some interesting factoids about the genus in question. There are some weird errors in the Lessem and Tempesta text -- for example, they mislabel the parts of the dinosaur hip -- and the factoids sometimes seem a bit randomly selected. But it's a nevertheless a good text for particularly young readers who need less text and more pictures.I also compared Holtz's book with Paul Barrett and Raul Martin's National Geographic Dinosaurs, David Burnie's The Kingfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopedia, and Gregory Paul's The Princeton Field Guide to Dinosaurs (Princeton Field Guides). These books are quite fine in their own way, but I felt they all fell short when compared to Holtz's Dinosaurs.The Barrett and Martin book contained a lot less information, in every respect really, than Holtz. My main reason for purchasing Barrett's book was the illustrations by Raul Martin. They are just gorgeous; more pleasing than Luis Rey's illustrations for the Holtz book, in my own view, despite the fact that Martin's Troodons and Velociraptors were, alas, completely unfeathered. Similarly, I learned that Gregory Paul, the author of the Princeton Field Guide, is one of the most influential paleoartists of the last 30 or so years and I very much love the extensive illustrations of dinosaur skeletons he included in his book. However, Paul uses a system for classifying dinosaurs and groups of dinosaurs that is, at least in places, not widely accepted. This fact alone diminished the value of the book for me. But putting that issue aside, it was also not as well organized and as informative (to a novice) as I found the Holtz book to be.Finally, Burnie's Kingfisher book was probably the most comparable to Holtz in terms of both the amount of content and the type of content. Still, I regularly found Holtz easier to follow, more informative about basic information, and more informative about how paleontologists have arrived at their conclusions (or why they disagree). The Holtz book has the added advantage of being more up-to-date.In sum, Holtz's book is the best I've seen. It's comprehensive. It is organized extremely well. (In fact, it's not really an encyclopedia in the strict sense. But despite this, it's not necessary to read the text cover to cover; the chapter topics make it is easy for the reader to jump around.) It's up-to-date, with discussions of cladistics and the thesis that dinosaurs are not extinct (birds are dinosaurs). And the artwork by Rey, while not my absolute favorite, is still excellent in most places.This is the dinosaur book I'd keep if I had to throw away all but one.

My dinosaur-loving 9-year old son has literally a dozen dinosaur books, and has read a least a dozen more from the library, and this is by far one of his favorites. He loves that it contains details that he can't get from other books and DVDs. The illustrations are also very nice. Great book for kids who want more than the typical basic facts found in dinosaur books for kids.

A really great science book about dinosaurs that's good for all ages. I bought it for my six-year-old daughter who became interested in dinosaurs when she realize they can also be pretty. This book has colorful illustrations of feathered dinosaurs. It also has lots of great scientific facts that entertains me and I can pick and choose what I read to her. Some parts are over her head but I think she'll grow into it. The illustrations are colorful-some too computerized but overall great

Terrific. I bought this as a birthday gift for my soon-to-be 9-year old grandson. He adores dinosaurs. Well written, with a friendly, enthusiastic style that makes the wealth of information easy to absorb. As a former resident of Montana, whose son went to Montana State, I was pleased to see a chapter about Jack Horner. I have told my grandson all about Jack Horner who discovered a new dinosaur and was a consultant paleontologist for the Jurassic Park movies. I probably should have gotten 2 of these, so that I could talk to my Grandson about each chapter.

I purchased this for a 5 year-old (who has indicated that he wants to be a paleontologist!) and he immediately fell in love with it. Of course he can't read the text, but he loves looking at the pictures, which are ample and beautifully illustrated, and having the text read to him. I was a little hesitant after reading the reviews that he might be too young to enjoy this, but it was his favorite birthday present! It truly seems well-billed as "good for all ages". I anticipate this is something he'll have and use into adulthood, or at least until we need to replace it from heavy use!

It is an excellent book for the older kids group - not for the little ones (not younger than say... 10 yrs old). Good coverage of the facts and in nice detail - not just the dinos but the time periods, the geologic events - the whole basket. The aspect of the book that all buyers need to be aware of is the illustrations by Luis Rey. Luis is a well recognized dinosaur illustrator - he does not try to make "hyper real" photo like interpretations of the dinosaurs. Instead his images are very colorful and sometimes a little crude. The magic of the illustrations is that they very often show the dinosaurs as they probably were - jabbering, squawking, arguing or have a little curious look at something else. If you want super clear, restrained illustrations of what the dinosaur looked like, this will disappoint you. If you want a book with illustrations that are evocative and suggestive of what life might have been like then this is for you.The book is unsurpassed in having sections on dinosaur upbringing, how dinosaurs walked, how fast they grew and their overall biology. These sections in particular, made we wish that as a kid 40 years ago such a book existed. Imagine tens of Hadrosaurs forming a protective ring around the young ones to keep away a predator and you will understand the difference between this book and the many "identify and classify" books that exist. The "identify and classify" books are very much needed and important; and they are the backbone of all I have learned about dinosaurs. This book adds to them in a great way and is a lot of fun to boot!

Great illustrations. Writing is ok.My issues are:1. the orange crabs almost seem red and there is enough red on the orange page (and there are orange clothes on the red page). This is enough inconsistency to be confusing to children as to which color is which.2. Some colors get two pages and some get four plus some colors have a lot of items but other only two. I don't like inconsistency like that.3. The book includes pink, brown, and white but NOT black. Black is the color of their hair, lacquerware, and panda spots so it could easily have been included. Its omission is strange. Although my daughter was born in China and now living here in the US. I want her to know her heritage. Grace Lin and Roseanne Thong have created many terrific books that let me share with my daughter about Asian families and how they celebrate and most importantly how color plays such a vital role in the Asians eyes and lifestyles.I love that Grace lin included dragon dancing and put feet under it for your child to see. I am trying to show my daughter that the Dragons used in Dragon Dances for the Chinese New Year is not a "live" dragon, but that there are many people or one person underneath and that they are wearing a dragon costume. Just like my daughter wheres a costume at Halloween. And then maybe this year she won't cry... or maybe not as much... she's only 2 1/2 years old.I love that the book introduces us to the Chinese culture and how they eat different foods and instead of using forks, knives and spoons they use chopsticks! I love that one of the last lines in the book prompts your child to see what colors are around them, be it in their homes, backyards and else where. I also love that there are definations of certain words that we might be unfamiliar with. No matter if you live in America, Australia, Canada or Neatherlands or anywhere that Asains have found a place to call home, this book will help you open your child & families lives & eyed to how Asians live.There are may terrific books by Grace Lin and Toseanne Thong, here's to many, many more books to come in the future!!!!!

We read my 28 month old son at least 3 books every night ... sometimes 5. To keep from getting bored, I purchase new books every month by season/holiday. Although Chinese New Year is long past, we still read this book every night. The poetry is simple and clear but yet still vibrant and descriptive. (I love the yellow scene.) The pictures are gorgeous! My son's ability to name colors has improved dramatically just from reading this book. We also have the Round as a Mooncake book and the Dim Sum book - we reccomend anything by this author.

My 18 month old children (boy/girl twins) both love this book, but my daughter is especially taken with it. I read it to her before bedtime and she is just absolutely mesmerized by the beautiful, flowing poetry, the gorgeous saturated colors and the lovely images. I look at my kids' faces while reading it to them, and I see them each carefully and thoughtfully scanning each page, enjoying the colors and images and taking it all in. It's a perfect bedtime book. It is truly a treasure in our growing library. I give it to all my friends for baby showers or new baby gifts.

Nice book. Simple. No real story and on the short side but the pictures are vibrant and attractive.

Such a good book to help teach colors and a little culture. My daughter is adopted from china and this is one of her favorites.

This is a fun biology/ecology book for very young children who are learning about North American animals. It incorporates learning with fun hands-on and visual arts and crafts, which makes it perfect for younger children. I especially liked that it looks at various ecological regions and the animals that live there. We used it in conjunction with lots of books and videos from the local library.

This book is great! It is layed out very well, which makes it great for parents/teachers to find activities for little ones. My preschooler has enjoyed the activities!

We use this as part of our Kindergarten curriculum for my son. And I chose it because I partly Unschool him. He is super interested in Nature and Animals. So, I can tell you that there is nothing in our homeschool he enjoys more than making this crafts! This is his favorite resource! Thank you for making our boy so happy!

I'm using this book as a skeleton on which to build a weekly "Biomes" class for elementary school kids. I appreciate the simple explanations of the different habitats and the way the book is organized (simple habitat explanation followed by information about the animals in that habitat w/ craft/project ideas and extra facts). The crafts are appropriate to the age advertised for the book (pre k), but also adaptable for older students (by adding more detail). The instructions for the crafts are pretty loose -- a lot of "draw a picture of animal X and then cut it out" type instructions. It would have been helpful had the book included templates for these activities. More variety in individual chapters would have been nice as well -- activities beyond animals -- perhaps plants and weather. Overall, a good book for the topic with lots of simple projects.

We got this book as part of our homeschooling curriculum. It was primarily used by my kindergartener. He loves to do crafts, and he LOVED this book! He was able to do a lot of the activities by himself, and I loved that it teaches you about animals at the same time! I feel like this book is DEFINITELY worth the cost! :)

This is a perfect book for young children who are interested in animals and nature. Each section has information about a particular animal and its habitat along with a fun craft project based on that habitat. The craft projects are simple and fast, and the kids can do many of the steps themselves. Most of the materials required are objects you would already have in your house.
