Where to begin? Well, this was a collection of letters that were found after a group of patients disappeared. I sit in the middle with the book. On one side, the editing could have used a lot of work. And I'm not talking about Looney toon talk that would have fit in the story, nope, I'm talking about periods missing, quotations in the wrong place, huge gaps in sentences, not enough gaps. It was hard to get through the story when I kept running into those issues that could have been easily fixed if it was properly edited. Upon doing research I found this was a work of fiction, no truth to it. So I felt the author lacked in selling the characters. Now, the stories were good of what these individuals had to endure but I didn't buy the writing style as their own. I think the author could have taken it a little further, which she did with one of the stories. But the lack of individuality didn't work for me and made me all too happy to finally finish it.
Well it is a two part book, hopefully there is the second book but I wish they had told me. I hate to hang. Now my daughter is 23 and she is better educated and thought it was perfect the way it was and that it did end.To me I don't know what happened next. To her it was a metaphor or something about mental health or politics or ??.Now it's a series of letters from various inmates of an insane asylum who are hating the newest and most extreme administrative personal.I run a small hotel in Colorado and I actually set my alarm a half hour early so I could finish this story. It's a slim little book (the type was easily read even without my glasses) So it really should have five stars except I'm annoyed about the ending.
This is clearly a self-published novel. The editing is very poor in some places--there are actual page numbers left in from the manuscript or first edition. There are also a lot of irregular capitalization practices Thatcher Nalley needs to fire her editor. Those are very elementary, pathetic, shameful errors. There are places with spelling and grammatical errors--however, you have to take into account that the "chapters" are supposed to be "LETTERS"--and how many people have perfect spelling, grammar, and capitalization all the time in their writing? A quick scan of your Facebook news feed should point out that very few people do. And the people who have complained that the errors are so poor that they can't finish the book are either drama queens or have severe OCD. The errors are noticeable but not that bad. You can understand the story just fine despite the errors. The book does seem to end "suddenly"--but if you'll notice, this is listed as BOOK ONE. There's supposed to be a sequel, which would take care of the "unfinished" ending. There are two things that I think would add to the book. The first is use of different fonts for each "chapter" or "letter" to make them look more like actual letters. The second is a list of "patients" and "staff" to help readers keep track while reading. Overall, a VERY interesting read and an engaging story. You may need some interest or experience in the mental health field to really be drawn in.
Picked up this book while trying to get back in the habit of reading daily. Psychology has always been a subject that interests me. This book in particular was a fun read. It is set up as a collection of letters from mentally ill patients. This style does very well in putting you in those patients heads as you read through the stories of how they ended up in the hospital as well as their daily living situation. A good quick read for someone like myself who posses a short attention span.
For anyone who can relate to problems in your family growing up, this book is for you. I felt for each and every person while reading their letters. Could not put the book down. There was a couple issues with some of the words printed incorrectly, but that was on the publisher. I cannot believe they allow books to go to print with out first reading the entire book. Great read. Can't wait for book 2.
I was under the assumption when buying this book that it was non-fiction. Upon further research, it is definitely not. The actual writing itself is poor. Grammar and punctuation is a mess. I feel that the story line was also poorly executed. With all that being said, I still couldn't put it down. Each patients' letter that was introduced, I had to finish their story. I feel that if the book was truly nothing more that just the patients' letters about their personal life experiences, the book would have been much better. Adding the whole aspect of everyone going missing was a little too much and honestly was not even a crucial part of the story. It is a super quick read, only 132 pages.
Pretty interesting read. I actually got this as a gift for someone very into these types of stories. They said it was grim and hard to stomach certain parts and made them feel melancholy with the stories. I read it after and agree. Can finish in a day if you are like myself, an avid reader. Hard to hear such sad tales :( Especially the young woman in the beginning. Worth the quick read
This book is very difficult to rate. These are letters from individuals to family, etc., written while the individuals were incarcerated in a particular state mental institution. The letters are not easy to read, photos of the individuals and some personal items left behind are included; some of the patients were incarcerated for over 50 years. Having been an RN in a lock up ward I found the letters fascinating, and the backgrounds of these folks really complex and interesting, HOWEVER it is a sad and difficult read and NOT for everyone. I think you would have to be interested in the history of the mentally ill, and even then it is a very illuminating commentary on how we treated the mentally ill in the 1930s and forward, at least until most of the state institutions were torn down and drugs came into use. Lives wasted, brutality, sadness, lost souls. Left me with insight into how these folks became locked up, what their lives were like (non lives), and the book is well put together, photos are fascinating, and letters carefully chosen but again - the book is not for everyone.
