They served the purpose for her weekly readings for school.

Inspiring book for my daughters, 6 and 8, and me to read together. We all loved it & were encouraged.

This was a difficult one to pass on to children, because some of the women were martyred. Also, at least one young woman was the victim of the Roman Catholic/Protestant conflict. I passed it on to a RomanCatholic woman friend.

I have been reading through this series with my children, and we love them! This book along with the companion, Ten Boys Who Didn't Give in, are about Christian martyrs from various periods stretching from the early church period through the mid-1900's. Each story begins with the person as a child and ends with them being welcomed into the Kingdom of God by Jesus. The stories speak of the faithfulness of God in each person's life and death. At the end of each story, a brief historical blub about the person is included along with a discussion question that relates the person's Christian's character to your life, and a prayer is included.

I like the concept of the lighthouse books very much. Our children need to know about real people in history who did great things for God. I think that sometimes the stories are a bit drawn out and my kids lose interest. I may try again as they get a little bit older (they are Kinder and entering 2nd grade). But I do recommend these books anyway.

If you want to inspire children to virtuous religious lives, choose positive stories. Children are too young to decide to die for their faith, and not mature enough to decide when it may be appropriate.It doesn't matter if you are Catholic, Protestant, Mormon, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Animist, Atheist or whatever. If children aren't old enough to decide for themselves if they should have cookies or candy for breakfast everyday, then they are not old enough to decide whether the religion taught to them by loving parents is one they should die for.In grade school, the nuns taught me a song "Faith Of Our Fathers" in which we sang how "sweet" it would be to die for our faith. Not one of us had any idea what death was; we were just singing what we were told to sing. This is not teaching a holy faith; it is programming an unholy martyrdom (and luckily, it didn't take; I don't think the nuns really wanted it to.)When you're an adult, then you can make adult decisions. Teaching children that they might want to die for their faith is a bad idea. There are many more positive books for religious children.

I was taught these same lessons as a young girl. As a result, I was convinced from ages 8 to 16 that I would die as a young woman overseas as a missionary. While I applaud international ministry, I was far too young to be dedicated to dying. When I chose at 16 to be involved in a different kind of ministry, I was so accustomed to the idea of death that I didn't know how to live. A decade later, I still feel like death is around every corner. Preparing my young mind to choose to die for my beliefs robbed me of a sense of security in the world. I urge parents - please do not encourage your children to choose death. If you have taught them well and they have a good conscience, they will be prepared to die for what is right, if necessary.

My daughter is 11 and because this book deals with martyrs she said it was sad--every story. Listed as 8-12 I bought the boy book for my 9 yo son and he said it was sad everybody dies. Might be upsetting to a sensitive child who has not been exposed to any death issues/martyr issues.

This is a very nice, simple book containing detailed information and a map of all the hikes. It's small and light enough to put in your pocket and hike with it; and I'm not one who likes to carry much on a hike. I bought two more as gifts. These are all pretty easy hikes, but fun and with diverse habitats and wildlife to enjoy.

Do not buy this book. It has out of date trails that are overgrown and you will be either lost or behind a trailer park in BFE.

We keep this handy book around when we have a day off. It's nice to see what's in the area without doing too much research online.

I will be visiting and wanted to get a book or two that would have easy hikes and walks. Nice book with maps and trails descriptions.

very complete & detailed, with a wide range of hiking itineraries, used it extensively to select & set up hikes on recent Florida vist

The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is that it omits beach walks and bay-front park walks, which are the best of Tampa Bay area walking.This book is small and light enough to take along on your hike - very handy.The organization is excellent - distance, hiking time, and difficulty are always given, along with notes about such things as trail surface, fees, maps, whether dogs are allowed, etc.The locator map and individual trail maps are excellent. Driving directions include the trail head GPS coordinates - VERY handy for remote locations where a street address does not exist or is not marked. And you can plug their exact GPS coordinate syntax into Google Maps and see not only a map, but a satellite view of the trail head.After years of experience with various hiking books with faults such as the lack of a locator map, obscure directions, and lack of detail about difficulty or trail surface, I am very impressed with the small, handy volume.

This book delivers what the authors intended to deliver which is valuable discussions around the pros and cons of the current Web Services technologies and what architects need to understand as they make systems architecture decisions with their Web Services implementations.This book is broader than the concrete examples that show the individual technologies in use. It is important to show these, but what is more important, in my opinion, is the accompanying sections that discuss the design tradeoffs when using the particular technologies that every good architect needs to be cognizent of if they are truly doing their job.Yes, the content is Sun implementation focused but insightful readers will get over their biases (for or against!) and just see these sections as concrete examples of the standards/technologies at work.Highly Recommended!

This book is not at all practical. It has over explained individual topics to the extent that it is even confusing. It is the last book to be used for quick reference. Contents are of absolutely of no practical value. Go elsewhere if you want to learn to apply webservices. This book is quite useless to me and I am a very experienced J2EE architect.

The book doesn't only give you a good insight in the concept of web services and surrounding technologies (which woud be even great on it's own), it is also capable of using the latest evolutions in products and frameworks in it's examples.First, the theory and definitions of all subjects surrounding the web services concept. If you have ever wondered what's the relationship between a Web service and SOAP, whether SOAP has to be used over HTTP, or how that UDDI discovery idea can be used in practical, this book really gives a clear and usefull explanation of all these things.On the other hand, the examples used throughout the book give a very focused view on the steps to take to implement web services in all possible ways. As mentioned before, the tools used in the examples of this book are really the latest developments on the market.If you share the frustration of being confused by the number of standards involved with web services, how they relate, and how to carry all this theoretical stuff towards a real implementation, this book will provide you with what you need.

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an emerging technology. But it has not yet fully emerged out of the academic and research-labs closets. Web Services is this long-awaited implementation, which would usher in the era of packaged and pluggable software.The integration mechanism of Web Services is expressed by the now famous triangle: publish-find-bind. In short, a sevice publishes itself in a UDDI directory (yellow pages), another service which needs this service looks up its "address" in the yellow-pages (find), and then contacts it directly (bind).The publish-find-bind triangle of SOA predates modern science. Since time immemorial, arranged marriages have been executed using this mechanism. Thus this triangle should rightfully be called " the holy matrimonial triangle".

I took the suggestion of another reviewer here and purchased a total ten copies from various online booksellers and distributed it to my direct reports so that they could develop a comprehensive understanding of how Web Services will work for solving IT issues we have been experiencing and to gain advantage over our competitors.Coming from a non-technical background, I still felt that it added a lot of value to my understanding as to where we should be headed as an organization. This book does well in explaining concepts that I wouldn't have otherwise known about. The chapters on service oriented architectures, components and security considerations was an eye opener.Didn't personally read the other chapters since I do not develop software but my staff tells me they are good as well. Organizations that are serious about web services would do well to buy this book for all members of their project team.

The introduction of birdbrained Papi, the harpy, adds a lot to the story. (Actually introduced in Vol. 1, but makes a bigger impression here.) She's the most human-like of the monster girls, is straightforward in personality, is reasonably proportioned (see earlier review in vol. 1), and kinda dumb. But nice. Her innocent and uninhibited personality makes for good comedy. I don't care for Cerea the centaur. Her proportions (that is, boobs) are beyond ridicule, almost sad. Supposedly the stiff, well mannered motherly type, she's just a downer.Next we meet the illegal alien jelly girl whose name (of course) is Suu. Why are manga artists fascinated with this name? Suu doesn't speak Japanese, or possibly not at all, but she is the weirdest yet. All the "monster girls" are supposed to be girls, but I have my doubts about Suu. In her first meeting with the crew, she violates all the other girls chastity, but in a hilarious way.This manga is edgy, pushing my boundaries with unanticipated semi-erotic situations. This is also part of it's charm. It is lighthearted and not seriously hentai. The male protagonist Kimihito keeps his cool and threads the needle, lots of tension but no consummation or heartbreak. By its own lights, it is a innocent harem style roma-com. With a heavy dose of fan service.

Poor Kimihito, just when he was starting to get used to having three lovely monster girls under his roof, their handler throws a new wrinkle and suggests that he marries one of the three, be it magnificient Miia, precocous Papi, or curvacous Centora. But the news does not come at a good time, as the full moon in hanging high and all three girls are feeling their "animal" instincts. Now he has to deal with making a big decision, deal with Miia's reptilian nature when she needs him to help her, and learn more about the monster world and the creatures in it - or he might not even MAKE it to the altar.this story picks up right where the last one ended and does not let up. With each story comes new developments, new characters (especially the lovable Suu), and more problems for our poor host hero. And unlike other series, he knows all three of the girls care for him and love him in their own ways and he does come up with a solution to the problem showing that he has a brain as well a good heart. A series like this should get an anime series going and if so I will have to buy it when it comes over to the states. I can not wait for the next book to see what happens next.

We're all here for the same reason. You don't actively look for a Monster Musume book for no reason. Unless maybe you're buying it as a gift for a friend that likes the series. I like Monster Musume and my friends look at me like "Yup, that's our weird anime lover."Content-wise: I loved the book.Physically: Book was sharp, clean, not sun-bleached.

Well got to say its still awesome about this book monster girls comedy a lot and of course talking and seeing what everyday monster girl are doing. Ms smith asking them to marry one of those three but in the end probably a harem. Well to think miia cooking is bad but nasty. The slime just arrive and they name is suu she will be awesome the slime but yeah this book here is good and great.

Being the second book of the series things pick up right where we left our hero; in trouble. These half monster half girls are nothing but problems. Yet he still tries to make them feel welcome in the human world. With the subject of a possible marriage on their minds the girls get aggressive. Overall a funny spin on the cliche harem comedy you see in manga. Some corny translation puns, but forgivable overall. Can't wait for the next book.

And really, when it comes to serialized stories, isn't that the bottom line? Do you want to continue? Yes, sometimes the fan service can be a bit tedious, but this isn't the first series that I felt that way about. But I like the premise, the story-telling and the artwork. When I put down this volume, I was definitely wishing I had vol. 3 available.

Dr. Lester Tenney authors this firsthand account of the fall of Bataan during WWII and its horrific aftermath. The daily barbaric and sadistic lawlessness was so rampant and prolific, that I found portions of this book just unbearable and quite difficult to read -- albeit I did. Dr. Tenney and his allied comrades endured 3 and half years of sadistic treatment, torture and systemic starvation. This heinous and cruel barbaric treatment was doled out at the whim of his Japanese captors. Lester also provides for some grim statistics: 55,000 personnel died while in defense of the Philippines, providing for a 2:1 ratio; that is two deaths for every one survivor. Just on the Bataan Death March alone, of the 60,000 Filipinos and 12,000 Americans that began their 68 mile forced march, only 7,500 would live to see the end of that horrendous war... of that number approximately 1,500 survivors were American.I really enjoyed the last few chapters of this book, as it dealt with Lester's physical/emotional liberation and his subsequent acclimation back into the civilian world. His optimistic outlook is what kept him going day-in and day-out of being brutally beaten and starved for the duration of the war, (his prewar weight was 185 lbs. and postwar weight was 101 lbs.). It seemed that no matter what his captors did to him he would press on and roll with the punches. Truly this was his second nature, and a life lesson that he used during and after the war.I've been fortunate to visit, (in peacetime), Bataan, Corregidor, and Camp O'Donnell, and can only imagine the depths of what you endured. Dr. Tenney I salute you and your comrades.

In my junior year at Arizona State University in 1970, Mr. Tenney (now Doctor Tenney) came into my insurance introductory class and said something to the effect: Twenty five years from now you will not remember any of your professors or classes taken her at ASU. However, there will be one or two that will have impacted your life and you remember them and their name. My name is Lester Irwin Tenney and I accept the challenge to be one of those persons. I retired in September, 2016 after working in the insurance industry for 44 years. I was in his class my senior year when he received his doctorate degree. WHAT a man. Being only 20 years old at the time, I wish that I knew then what I know now about the Bataan Death March. He told us stories at the time that just seemed to be stories ---- IF I ONLY KNEW! I called him a few years ago and had the pleasure to tell how much he influenced me these past 40+ years.I just finished reading John Grisham's latest book called The Reckoning. Based on the story line, it sounded like Mr. Grisham had read Dr. Tenney's book in his research. I strongly recommend reading my hero's book My Hitch in Hell and The Reckoning. I bought this book, put it down meaning to get to it and then got sidetracked for 6 months. Just read it in the past few days and, man - what an incredible story. I knew little about the Bataan Death March but this book has inspired me to learn more. It was riveting in itself, well-told and, as another reviewer said, the pages turned themselves. I was glad to see that the author, 50 years later, took in a Japanese student and was subsequently invited back to Japan with him as a wedding guest. Humanity at its best, though I seriously doubt that I am equipped with the emotional and mental strength to have not only survived, but survive well as Dr. Tenney did. He truly was part of the Greatest Generation.

Les Tenney was my finance and insurance professor at ASU back in the early seventies, and I vividly remember his stories of the Bataan death march as he wove them into his classes. Les is a brilliant teacher, and his articulate, instructive manner permeates this well written book. At each chapter, just as the reader thinks things can't get any worse, they get horribly worse. The only thing that saved his life were his entrepreneurship and willingness to learn Japanese so he could literally bargain with the guards for his life. He is the only one I have ever met who actually saw the mushroom cloud over Nagasaki. Not covered in the book is the fact that the U.S., alone among its allies, never compensated the victims for five years of hell as slave laborers in the coal mines of Japan, and he has been a tireless advocate of this with Congress, to no avail. A difficult and gruesome read, but you can't put it down. A must read for anyone interested in World War II, and in achieving justice by compensation for these great patriots.

This was a really interesting book to read and one that gave tremendous personal insight into being a prisoner of the Japanese in Bataan and then to Japan. How these prisoners survived is beyond me. The torture, beatings, starvation, lack of medicine, lack of water and disease are hard to embrace and fully appreciate, but these prisoners survived. The story is amazing, but also well told, factual and a good insight into the daily life of a prisoner in Japan.

This novel is about an American WWII soldier captured by the Japanese and what happened to him as a POW. He is a Bataan Death survivor.as well as a POW in the Philippines and Japan. I cannot summarize the story author Lester I Tenney has to tell his readers. I recommend reading this book for anyone who has interest in our US military history. This story is as much a part of the history of WWII as any other book written about this war.Recently, I met a survivor of the Bataan Death March and his story was equally awful. We owe so much to our military and especially all POW''s.
