About the Author
Thomas R. Schreiner has been a professor at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky since 1997 and is the James Harrison Buchanan Professor of New Testament Interpretation. He has also taught New Testament at Azusa Pacific University and Bethel Theological Seminary. He received a B.S. from Western Oregon University, a M.Div. and Th.M. from Western Seminary, and a Ph.D. in New Testament from Fuller Theological Seminary. Schreiner's writings include commentaries on Romans, Galatians, Hebrews, and 1–2 Peter and Jude, and forthcoming commentaries on 1 Corinthians and Revelation. He has also written a theology of the Apostle Paul, a New Testament theology, and a theology of the entire Bible. He is a pastor at Clifton Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. Schreiner is married to Diane, and they have four children (Daniel, Patrick, John, and Anna) and eight grandchildren (Sam, Iris, Willia, Lydia, Kesid, Julieanna, Canaan, and Maria).

A much needed volume in the study of spiritual gifts. Dr Schreiner’s arguments are compelling and worth considering as one considers Grudem and Carson’s work on the same.
One of the best books out there on the topic. Could have gone deeper, but fair defense on the topic without being dogmatic on issues which we don’t have clear evidence. Much better than MacArthur.
I find myself agreeing with cessationists but then also noting that the "quality of miracles" seems to have changed, and thus wondering if maybe I need another category. Here it is! If you are a zealot for either continuation or cessation, you probably will find this book wishy washy. If you are open-minded, you will appreciate his balanced treatment and may well agree with his conclusions.
for various reasons i’ve been reading about spiritual gifts for the past couple years, and found this book to be helpful. it is honest with some of the weaker arguments for cessationism and is clarifying on a lot of terminology and concepts around the charismatic gifts.
Bought as a christmas gift after a bible study and assessment. We enjoyed reading and learning about our strengths and where we have room to grow.
I consulted this reference as one of several for my doctoral dissertation on Spiritual Gifts.
Schreiner cover the ground of the salient scriptures in a quick, but sufficiently thorough way. He is gracious and clear about areas of agreement and distinction in this discussion, and I found the last two chapters to be imminently helpful as a summary.
This is probably one of the best books I have read on really looking at the spiritual gifts. I pre-ordered this book because Dr. Schreiner is the best NT scholar I know. He provided some excellent clarity to questions I had and I believe many others have as well. I cannot recommend this book enough. If you want a great book by a great man of God on what the spiritual gifts are and if they are present today then this is the book for you.
