Once I downloaded this and realized it was a behemoth of a read, I doubted I'd be able to use it in my classroom, but I read on regardless. Despite its length, this novel is fluid and never tiresome. Its beauty is reflected on every page. The main character, Johnny Wheelwright, spends a lot of time talking about his best friend Owen Meany, the book's titular character, but through this narrative we learn a tremendous amount about the Johnny as well. Even alluding to the content of the story gives away too much, and this is a book you must experience for yourself.As an avid reader, many books fade with time. This one will always stay with me.

I laugh and I cry at exactly the same parts where I always laugh and always cry but the story and its miracle never grows old. It is a story of love. Love between friends, between a mother and her son, within families we are born into and within families we create. It is so hard to reduce the story to a simple rehash in a review. Owen came from a poor and depressed home where both of his parents were mentally handicapped. John came from a fatherless but loving home, where he lived with his mother and grandmother. Often, imperfect people, are used by God, to influence and teach others, life lessons. Owen was such a person, and he knew what his purpose was.A Prayer For Owen Meany is a book that will grip your heart, trigger your anger, make you think, laugh out loud and cry. It’s a fascinating book that will leave an imprint on your heart.

Personally, however, I found as a Kindle book, it was hard to stay involved with it. I ended up reading it over a long period of months, when usually I finish a book in days. The pacing is slow, the detail is great. Ultimately satisfying but a long, long journey for the reader (at least for me, in this format). But it's a good book, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes John Irving's work.

I think this book is unforgettable.It's long and requires some patience.There is quite a bit of political meandering, but I lived through the Viet Nam thing with my friends (and my husband) deciding to go or trying to get a deferment..The character of Owen Meany was unlike any character I've ever met before. and the relationship between him and the narrator was wonderful.For me to call a book unforgettable is saying a lot since I read or listen to audio books on a daily basis. A lot of books run through your mind and are gone. This is not one of them... at least not for me.But then I have always been a fan of John Irving and I think this is one of his best.

It took a long time to see the thread that brought it all together. After a while, I was involved enough to feel a commitment, to be curious. Then it all came together. Like John Wheelwright, I needed time to see the big picture, to become a believer.

The business interests from the future, namely NBC and its parent company General Electric, plan to utilize their time travel technology to allow them to transport a television crew back to the time of the Crucifixion at Golgotha. With the intent of sweeping the TV ratings, studio executives are transported to 96 AD in the form of holograms. St. Timothy is their main contact; the executives spare no expense to help St. Timothy prepare his Gospel. Apparently, a mysterious hacker has accessed history at its core and is erasing all other historical documentations of Jesus and his early church. So, St. Timothy must negotiate with self-serving holograms from the future. At times, he will have two holograms of the same person in his room, sent back from the future, but from ten years apart, so their holograms will be of varying quality.Gore Vidal takes a cynical and heretical view of religion and emphasizes Christianity's objectives as self-promotion in pursuit of the all mighty dollar. St. Paul is a charismatic marketer who rolls into a town with his dog-and-pony show. Sometimes, he is taken in and provided large sums of money, other times; he is nearly stoned to death. Vidal makes references to Saint Paul's Holy Rolodex of names used for fundraising and of Jesus' attempt to lower the Prime Rate as the real reason for Jesus' ousting of the money-lenders from the temple.With the aid of worldly knowledge he gains from a television that is transported back through time, St. Timothy transforms from an innocent apostle's assistant to an aggressive deal maker. This book is sooo chock full of interesting information! Perfect combination of short sentences and paragraphs, pointing out the most interesting facts and tidbits about the Titanic, why it crashed, some historical information that shows why so many people did not need to die, nor did the boat need to crash!- GREAT for kids from 4-10- Super inexpensive, we bought for about $3- Just the right length, should last the kid about 30 mins to read on his/her own while looking at the pics- Since it's a 2 ounce paperback book, it's very portableHighly recommend and thank you Nat Geo! My son is 7 and is obsessed with all things Titanic. This book has new and interesting facts and good pictures. It's a bedtime favorite in our house. I especially like how they address the fact that people died, but don't sensationalize the deaths. Instead they focus on all the changes put into effect so this type of accident wouldn't happen again. Also, this is one of the few books that shows some information about the 2nd and 3rd class cabins.

This book was just what I wanted for my 8-year-old grandson who is interested in the Titanic. The print is larger and not too intimidating for a younger reader. The layout of the pages is colorful and attractive for a younger reader, and the pictures are among the best I have seen compared to other books on the Titanic written for children. I deducted one star because the magazine is rather small, a mini-magazine, with fewer than 50 numbered pages.

I bought this for my 9 year old son who is fascinated by the Titanic. He’s read many books on the ship, and I suppose I was expecting a little more for a National Geograohic book, but it just fell flat. This would be a better book for a younger child in first grade, perhaps.

My 10 year autistic son is obsessed with Titanic. He loves it and has already wore out pages. It's been fun and informational to read with him. As a daughter of a school teacher, she ordered one as well for her classroom after seeing how well the story of passengers was told but didn't scare kids when talking about passengers deaths.

I have a four year old son who is very interested in the Titanic (don't ask me how we got there lol) but this is perfect for him! I got the kindle version and we are very happy with it. Perfect amount of information for the younger audience (interesting facts for me as well). The pictures are very detailed and colorful. I would buy again and I would recommend it!

My son is really into Titanic everything and this book was definitely not a let down. He loved the variety of information given and the way it was presented. Definitely would recommend for the Titanic lover in your life!

My son is 7 and interested in the Titanic. I wanted something that had lots of facts and pictures, but was still accessible and appropriate for his age group and reading level (too many books for kids on this topic are too dense, or are for older readers). The book is good for both solo reading and reading together. It's not too long or too big, so it's not intimidating. I like the imagery and the design. It is just enough for a young boy's attention span. The author is a good children's non-fiction writer, so when I saw her name as author, I felt confident ordering this book.

The book reminded me of many good lessons I learned during my ten years in the military and had almost forgotten.The book contains the following four sections on the topic of Survival: 1). Mental and Physical 2). 34 Specific Survival Scenarios 3). Gear and Weapons 4). Medical TreatmentI have already recommended this book to many of my friends and purchased the book for my sons-in-law (neither of whom has a military background). I feel Courtley's primary contribution in this writing is in the following three areas: 1). It helps people develop situational awareness. 2). It explains the importance of acquiring a survival mentality. 3). It introduces a method for making good survival decisions quickly under stress.If you are breathing, you need this book. Get it now!

The best messages for me from this book are to push myself to see how much I can really do, at any age. Run a bit faster or for longer. The only reason I rated this 4 out of 5 stars is because some people who read its advice would become paranoid instead of prepared.

SEAL Survival Guide is very applicable to the regular John Doe. You may not be able to become an expert, and I feel being a SEAL is a stressful way to live. From my standpoint, I would feel I was being very paranoid, but my life is not like a SEAL. However, the information he gives is very, very helpful and will help in the future. Thank you for writing this book.

I had heard the author on the radio, and thought this would be a great book for my adult sons. All of them live in places with inclement weather, and all of them like outdoor activities. I thought that the book would cover situations like getting stuck in a show bank overnight, but the book covers ALL survival scenarios--at least, all that I can think of--and many more. Be sure to go to the preview on Amazon & check out the Table of Contents.When my sons got the book, they asked when I was going to disarm a hand grenade or be involved in a high-speed chase. (You never know what grandma might do...) These are some of the more dramatic incidents that the author addresses, but the author does address more mundane issues like getting stuck in the desert, falling through the ice & auto accidents.One of the best parts of the book are the side bars. One is "Never Hesitate to Ask Questions That Could Save Your Life"--It's a paragraph long, but the salient point is--"Don't let the fear of what others think of you become an impediment to survival." Hmmmm....think 9-11 when people stayed in the buildings because they were told to.The info in this book is so current that the author addresses the Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster and mall shootings.The Table of contents is in alphabetical order by incident, and therefore serves as a quick & easy index! If I'm involved in the middle of a biochemical attack, I want to be able to quickly look up some practical tips. Of course, I'll be carrying my Seal Survival Guide with me! Grandma's got you covered.Buy it. Put it in the bathroom. Learn it. Live.

The author took what could have been a dull subject and made it into very easy reading. While the central point invariably returns to situational awareness, there are many good, and potentially life saving, tips for average folks. Since no one knows when a dangerous event may pop up, it seems only sensible to learn the best way to handle, at least, some of the more common ones.

This book is like a survival bible. It addresses most adverse situations a person might encounter throughout his or her life. The author then goes on to recommend one or more solutions that are most likely to keep (& anyone with you) alive & pointed in a right direction to get safely out of, or away from, the adversity. There is much, much more expert advice included. A great read & a book you’ll want to keep handy.

The book is well written. The author tries to cover almost every single survival situation. I learned a lot about topics and situations I hope I will never experience. Even dog bites and attacks are described. Some situations are described in great detail. Some are a bit shallow but they are not that critical in my opinion. Definitely worth the read.I only wish I had bought the hard cover version in order to hit a potential attacker in the throat as he suggests in the book.

Well written how not to get your self dead book. The author covers many survival subjects and makes some great suggestions. Even if you are not the physical specimen of a Navy Seal there is information that you can and should use. Most of what is offered is common sense which many in our society is lacking in an age that could kill you if you are not paying attention. This book brings focus as to what we should be paying attention to. Can you survive an active shooter in a mall? This book increases you chances in that scenario and many others.
