#447,680 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I did find this book interesting but as others have already mentioned, it tended to skim over the surface and we really needed more in depth details of social life, services etc. for the population at that period in time. I did note that there are Romanians now wishing they had the security they had during that period, housing, jobs food on the table and I have heard similar reports from other Eastern block countries. I also thought that it jumped about too much from different periods and would have been easier perhaps to understand this period better if the each chapter in the book had related to a period in time from his rise to power to Christmas Day.Living in Greece for 35 years has brought home to me just how closely related we in the Balkan countries are compared to Northern Europeans. I have found here that same sheep like attitude of following a leader that tells his people what they want to hear rather than the plain truth. Here in Greece it has always been the aim of the vast majority of Greeks to find a position in the public services rather than persue a career in private enterprise or even their own venture. Is this due to history, the instability in the respective countries that citizens seek security rather than to be adventurous and work to achieve a goal in life.Of course total power does corrupt and this is exactly the problems we have here in Greece and why we are living in a bankrupt country relying on loans. When there is only one House of Parliament and the Presidency is stripped of all power then of course the leaches are there to benefit themselves. The longer in power of any totalitarian leader, the more will gather to feed from the trough. These governments hand out positions to the faithful that keep them in power. This is why Democracy is so precious. Thanks Catalin, I do consider this book worth a read.

The description for The Man They Killed on Christmas Day says it is a “concise journalistic account of Ceausescu’s life.” What it should really say is that it is an extraordinarily brief overview that skips pretty much everything he did to the Romanian people. It mentions the abortion laws and the dramatic decline of the economy in the 80s, but it doesn’t really give any indication as to why the Caeusescus were sentenced to death. It doesn’t really give any indication as to why the people of Timisoara rebelled. It doesn’t even really answer the question it promises to address: Who was the “real” Nicolae Ceausescu? There is just way too much missing and is not really worth the time it takes to read it (which isn’t much – it is quite short and really barely able to be called a book).

I have lived in Ceausescu's world for only 4 years before The Revolution came. I do have vague memories about a life lived in black and white shades smoothed out by my loving family: singing songs during evenings with power cuts when no light and no TV were available, having the weekly bath when hot water was allowed into our homes for a few hours, receiving gifts at kindergarden from a disguised Santa that we called "Santa Frost", beind made "hawk of the homeland" which made me a young communist in the making. Then The Revolution happened and I remember my family not knowing what was happening, being concerned for my grandfather who was then a colonel in the navy, hearing fire arms being shot in the streets and a vague joy that somebody called Ceausescu had died. We were tearing the pages that contained Ceausescu's face off every book, magazine and newspaper. It was a defiance towards something I didn't understand but something that my parents used to fear.It is not yet clear for my generation who Ceausescu was and this book helps fill in some gaps that the history books taught in schools fail to. I do fear the submissive, cowardly nature of my people that does not know how to defend democracy. I feel ashamed that my people did not judge the murderers of Ceausescu like they should have and that instead they allowed all the people behind the communist regime to survive in a masked democracy under the presidency of Iliescu and his kind. This is why today we still suffer from corruption and bad government and this is why my generation preffers to educate itself and work outside the country.

Without following the news closely it can be hard to keep abreast of all the changes that have happend in my lifetime (and maybe yours) in Eastern Europe. This story brings home the impact to the folks who live there how a dictator affects the common people, the ones who just happen to abide in an area of the world that is unstable. Not a long read, its clear and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys history from a personal perspective.

The beginning of the book seemed a little derivative, but that was not the case. This book revealed details that I, nor the world, had been aware of.I watched the revolution on CNN as it unfolded. I watched a few documentaries on the subject as well, but I was pleasantly surprised at the accuracy of the whole book.Buy this book. It's definately a page turner.

About a painful subject from the recent Romanian history. It's not revealing the secrets of December '89, but as a foreigner you might want to read it if you want to understand what stayed behind the latest Romanian revolution. might help you better understand Romanians.what I know for sure, it will definitely not answer the question â€Å¾why was this man killed on the Christmas Day?”.

To many people in Romania Ceusescu remains a hero in spite of the horrific human rights abuses and corruption of the Orthodox Church -- I wanted to read about him and understand why

This was a balanced and insightful account of the rise of a peasant's son to the dictatorship of communist Romania. I would have giving the book 5 stars, but based on the title, I was hoping that the author would expose more about those that executed Ceausescu and his wife and then proceeded to steal their way to wealth at the expense of the Romania people. Perhaps it is still too dangerous for that.

Writing Fiction: The Practical Guide from New York's Acclaimed Creative Writing School

From Publishers Weekly

The faculty of the Gotham Writers' Workshop-which now has 6,000 students not only in New York City but around the world (with online classes)-use an original approach in this how-to: Raymond Carver's classic story "Cathedral" (reprinted in the book) serves as a basis for their discussion of technique. The contributors are not household names, but all are published authors of fiction. Chapters touch on all the essentials: character development, pacing, dialogue and revision ("Real Writers Revise" the chapter title exhorts). All expand on the idea that "good writing comes down to craft far more than most people realize," while also reminding aspiring authors that "rules are made to be broken." The writing is fresh and full of concrete advice (e.g., "Desire is in the heart of every dimensional character"), and exercises allow students to explore what they have learned. This is an excellent starting place for someone exploring the art and craft of writing fiction.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

#18,670 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This workbook-style guide to writing fiction is put out by the well-known New York City creative writing school. With 11 chapters, it delivers lessons on all the elements of fiction including: character development, plotting, establishing point of view, honing description, building realistic dialogue, varying pacing, establishing voice, determining a work’s theme, and carrying out revisions. It also has a chapter that goes into the business of writing (as opposed to the craft of writing which is the bailiwick of the first ten chapters.)There are a couple of features of this book that set it apart from the vast canon of writers’ guides. First, this isn’t a single author work, which means the reader has access to a much broader pool of experience than one would in a single author text. It also means that an author can be assigned a topic according to his or her strengths as a writer.Second, across the chapters, they use Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral” as an example work, and they provide that story in an appendix for those who haven’t read it. It’s not that the authors exclusively use this short story for examples. But it’s useful to have a common story and to include it because there are so many great stories and novels available that no matter how well-read one’s readership, there will be works that some haven’t read. (e.g. Much as I should’ve, I haven’t yet read nor seen the movie “Gone with the Wind”--a common exemplary work because it’s a beloved book, a movie, and because pop culture references [e.g. “The Simpsons”] have made the gist of it available to even those slackers who’ve neither read the book nor seen the movie.) There’s a reason why writers’ book authors often use movies to describe story elements, because there are many fewer movies than books and vastly fewer good movies—thus a higher likelihood of a common experience. Yes, there are a few works common across most school curricula, but there’s no better way to ensure that a book doesn’t get read thoroughly than to assign it as required reading.A third useful feature of this book--but not one that is in any way unique to it--is that it offers writing exercises throughout to help build one’s skills through practice. This is where the value of such a book truly lies. The advice such books offer are almost always the same—sometimes hackneyed but almost always valuable. (A lot of tired advice is tired because it bears repeating owing to the constant infusion of new writers who repeat the same errors.) A final useful element of the book—but also one that features in many similar guides—is a checklist in the appendices that allows one to rapidly consider the book’s key questions as they apply to one’s own writing project. I’d recommend this book as one of the most useful writers’ guides that I’ve read.

Highly recommended for aspiring fiction writers who are self-directed and for whom teacher-directed learning doesn’t necessarily enhance the learning process, or for those whose schedules preclude taking a Gotham workshop. The eleven chapters, each written by a different author, clearly convey the essentials of writing publishable fiction. A sample of chapter titles: “FICTION: THE WHAT, HOW AND WHY OF IT,” “CHARACTER: CASTING SHADOWS,” “VOICE: THE SOUND OF THE STORY,” and “THE BUSINESS OF WRITING: DRIVING YOURSELF NUTS FOR FUN AND PROFIT.”The founders of the Gotham Writers’ Workshop, Jeff Fligelman and David Grae, accurately write in their introductory comments: “Now we’ve put the Gotham style of teaching into a book. The ability to write—to write with excellence—is in your hands.”

Gotham Writers Workshop: Writing Fiction has been the most helpful and informative of my many books on writing fiction. The instruction and examples demonstrate each element of the fiction-writing craft as though the instructor is providing one-on-one coaching. These are followed by challenges that stimulate my thoughts and, as I work with them, improve my skills in those areas. I can identify the improvements. I'm discovering how to give my characters more depth and power. I am building more precise plot development and gaining skills that help me keep the action alive in my story. I'm grateful to have found this material. It's built up my confidence and benefited my writing. Gotham Writers Workshop: Writing Fiction is a source I will review again and again.

I have what could be called a passing interest in fiction writing. It's something I've always wanted to do, and I know I'll do it someday but I can't say it's a serious pursuit. I bought this book to skim around and see what I could glean from it. I ended up reading it all the way through, and let me say this:If I were seriously pursuing writing fiction this book would set me up very, very well. It's structured well and gets you thinking about the right things when it comes to writing, (and even reading) a novel. The very first thing it does is explain the types of literature, examples of them and immediately starts priming you to start practicing the craft.I had so many "a ha!" moments when reading this. I began to think back and start to understand why certain authors did what they did. It's like being put behind the scenes while a movie is filmed, you start to discover the craft, as well as how and why certain things are done.It takes a close look at Cathedral and several other works and uses a lot of examples to explain theory.I feel like this single book could improve someone's work dramatically, especially if they start at a ground level like me. I'm sure even experienced authors could benefit from this book as well though. The bottom line: read this book before thinking about writing fiction.

From the Inside Flap

The First World War created the modern world. A conflict of unprecedented ferocity, it abruptly ended the relative peace and prosperity of the Victorian era, unleashing such demons of the twentieth century as mechanized warfare and mass death. It also helped to usher in the ideas that have shaped our times--modernism in the arts, new approaches to psychology and medicine, radical thoughts about economics and society--and in so doing shattered the faith in rationalism and liberalism that had prevailed in Europe since the Enlightenment. With The First World War, John Keegan, one of our most eminent military historians, fulfills a lifelong ambition to write the definitive account of the Great War for our generation. Probing the mystery of how a civilization at the height of its achievement could have propelled itself into such a ruinous conflict, Keegan takes us behind the scenes of the negotiations among Europe's crowned heads (all of them related to one another by blood) and ministers, and their doomed efforts to defuse the crisis. He reveals how, by an astonishing failure of diplomacy and communication, a bilateral dispute grew to engulf an entire continent. But the heart of Keegan's superb narrative is, of course, his analysis of the military conflict. With unequalled authority and insight, he recreates the nightmarish engagements whose names have become legend--Verdun, the Somme and Gallipoli among them--and sheds new light on the strategies and tactics employed, particularly the contributions of geography and technology. No less central to Keegan's account is the human aspect. He acquaints us with the thoughts of the intriguing personalities who oversaw the tragicallyunnecessary catastrophe--from heads of state like Russia's hapless tsar, Nicholas II, to renowned warmakers such as Haig, Hindenburg and Joffre. But Keegan reserves his most affecting personal sympathy for those whose individual efforts history has not recorded--"the anonymous millions, indistinguishably drab, undifferentially deprived of any scrap of the glories that by tradition made the life of the man-at-arms tolerable." By the end of the war, three great empires--the Austro-Hungarian, the Russian and the Ottoman--had collapsed. But as Keegan shows, the devastation ex-tended over the entirety of Europe, and still profoundly informs the politics and culture of the continent today. His brilliant, panoramic account of this vast and terrible conflict is destined to take its place among the classics of world history. I really enjoyed “The First World War” by John Keegan. For me it was slow reading and I was impressed by the concepts and details he gave. Yes, I skimmed over unit names. I saw a film on WWI and wanted more info on how it started. He filled in those details impressively. The author's theory is that after the assassination the Russian mobilization to defend their allies forced Germany to declare war. It was too risky not to.He talked about what some of the counties experienced in previous wars. So, every country seemed to think it would last a few months with little risks and more territories to gain. He talked some about the large number of French generals fired after a few months of war. Were they all inept or did folks have too high of expectations on them?He also talked about battle strategy of coordinating artillery and troops. How the battle strategy evolved, how the trench systems evolved, and the problems the commanders had of getting real time info. There are details about pre-war battle plans and how logistics drove them. Population unrest, food shortages, office politics of the generals.I enjoyed the book and am gonna read more of his. Just ordered another one.

Great, great book. Explains lots of things I thought I knew something about: the stumbling into the war, the mobile war of 1914 followed by the trench war, the massive asymmetry between offensive and defensive weapons that led to such massive losses of life, the interplay of politics and military strategy, the impact of personalities on the frontline, the importance of the US entry into the war, the collapse of the German army, when the soldiers just got fed up with death. At the end of 1914, the generals already knew that the war could not be won (by either side) without massive loss of life, and yet they wore on. Devastating in its portrayal of human gallantry and stupidity on a massive scale. You will never see one of those beautifully kept military cemeteries in France without feeling the sadness caused by such sacrifice and such mindless suffering.

I wanted to absorb a comprehensive over view of WWI. I have read other of Keegan's work with benefit to me. But I found it hard going. I could only read about 25 pages at a sitting. Why? Because I could only absorb so much awful stuff at one go. I did meet my goal. I understand a very great deal of the war as a whole story, all the bits I had in my mind for years, now have a frame to organize them. I could give an example of his writing on almost any page but offer this as an example of the power and wisdom of his words--- "The legacy of the war's political outcome scarcely bears contemplation: Europe ruined as a center of world civilization, Christian kingdoms transformed through defeat into godless tyrannies, Bolshevik or Nazi, the superficial difference between their ideologies counting not at all in their cruelty to common and decent folk."How many writers can write a sentence like that and have it not just make sense-hard enough-but to shift the heart and mind. Wow.

The First World War is a massive subject. Keegan does a great job capturing the essence of the war without dragging the book out as long as the war itself. When covering a topic of this scale, it is impossible to dive into all the details. So Keegan's overview is not suitable for the well read student. But for those who are a novice to the subject or have only read about parts of the war or seen it in documentaries, Keegan is a great place to start. Keegan explains at depth how the war began. He discusses the spark and what transformed an isolated tragedy into a juggernaut of world slaughter. It is fascinating to read how military strategy preempted political reality, and misguided belief in the quick decisive victory, sent millions to their graves. As a avid reader of WWII, it is interesting reading how the strategy of WWI influenced the path of WWII. Especially interesting is reflecting on what the outcome of WWI would have been with the technology of WWII.But with the end in sight (at least the Germans thought so), the war takes a different shape as it hardens into trench warfare. Keegan explains how the tactics and strategy for trench warfare evolved throughout the war. He discusses the uses of new technologies like chemical warfare, indirect artillery, machine guns, aerial combat, and tanks. Keegan also explains that all these new technological advances only serve to stack the body count without delivering the knockout blow so desired. He shows over and over again how the lack of development in communications prevented breakouts from sustaining their momentum. In fact, it would take another war to hone these techniques even after the technology was available. Even in Normandy during WWII, the allies found it difficult to coordinate infantry with armor formations and close air support. Keegan also explores the expansion of the war as a European war grows to consume most of the world. He covers the war at sea which results in the near annihilation of the German High Seas Fleet. But the book is not perfect. There could be more maps to reflect the narrative. Keegan does allow national pride to color his discussion of British actions. The end of the war lacks the coverage it deserves. Others have pointed out the gripes. But, it is hard to please everyone. Keegan still delivers an excellent overview of the "Great War". I recommend this book highly to anyone interested in history. Understanding WWI is fundamental in appreciating the history of the last century. The lessons of the world wars should be understood by anyone interested in foreign policy.

Mr. Keegan's book gives great detail of the various maneuvers that made the war the complex and horrible affair that it was. His conclusions suggest that (I'm paraphrasing) real causes and benefits of the war are difficult to ascertain, and from reading his study, that makes perfect sense. He truly underscores the utter waste of human conflict. The work has the strength of strong organization. I wish there has been more maps in the book to assist in pinpointing the described action. Also, despite the late entrance of the United States into the war, there could have been more on the role Americans played and the intriguing situation that existed in the nation as the U.S. entered the war.
