Read this book even if you're not panning a trip to China. In it, Bill Porter provides a day-by-day account of his observations and experiences during a challenging solo tour in one of the most remote and interesting regions remaining on this planet: southwest China. Each of the chapters in the author's travelogue features one of the many towns and villages where he stops to observe and describe the people and their unique customs as well as the history, folklore, and natural wonders associated with the locale. The narrative is supplemented by well-chosen photographs and punctuated with wry humor. My interest in this book stems from a year (1987-88) I served in China as a Fulbright scholar. That was some four years before Porter ventured there. I had visited many of the same locales the author traverses and describes in engaging detail. Much to my regret, I lacked the language skills needed to satisfy the intense curiosity generated by what I was experiencing. Thus, it was a privilege to be guided along this itinerary by someone who, though a westerner, obviously has a deep understanding of Chinese culture as well as the language skills needed to interact with the people he encounters in this enchanting realm "south of the clouds."
Bill Porter is one of the few translators and China specialists who can speak, with equal elogence and ease, on the Chan Buddhist priniciples underlying the all American sport of baseball. He continues on as the current bodhisattva for the lineage of the Beat Generation. Buy ANY and ALL things that Sir Red Pine writes! In this visit to South West China, he reveals the non-Han patchwork underlying this part of China. His travel books are the China version of Steinbeck's Travel's with Charley and thus a deeply rewarding investment of your time and attention.
A terrific book in the travel genre that offers a wealth of information to readers having little or no background in Chinese studies.
This book was very detailed of his travels. It left me asking more questions. But the details of what he saw and where he went was good.
I'm a big fan of Bill Porter (RC). I have traveled in China, & I think that he captures it well, I visited during the 10990's, which is the time he wote about.
Bill Porter is remarkable, not just for his depth of knowledge of Chinese language and culture, but also for his extensive travels in China itself. In this, his fourth book detailing these travels, he visits South West China with a view to visiting as many as possible of the traditional hill tribes that still maintain their unique identities within the container that is modern China. This particular journey took place in 1992, so may well be more than a little out of date, but I suspect that these places are sufficiently out of the way that in many ways they remain essentially the same.He manages to spend time with the Chuang, Yao, Tung, Puyi, Miao, Aini, Aka, Chinuo, Tai, Yi, Pai, Nahsi, and Lisu (and I may well have missed one or two from the list). I have never been to China, but I did spend time in Thailand in the 1970s and had some slight contact with the hill tribes there, and I found it fascinating to read how these tribes successfully maintain their unique culture despite being separated by present day national borders. He also visits a number of the spectacular sights of the region, such as the Huangkuosha and Silver Necklace Waterfalls, the Yunnan Stone Forest, and the Yuanmou Earth Forest, among others. I admire how he has the energy to keep going on a day to day basis, despite regular encounters with rice wine and other alcoholic beverages, and always seems to find the time to visit yet another out of the way site.I do find his prose style very easy to read and down to earth, and his account flows along effortlessly, so that what could become a repetitive exercise of detailing different tribes and tourist sites, manages instead to convey something of the experience and curiosity of the writer. All in all, well worth reading if you have any interest in the diversity and variety that is China.
Bought the soft cover edition of 'South of the Clouds' and enjoyed the authors style as he brings you in on his tour of 1992 Yunnan. I'm sure things have changed immensely but still enjoyed the content and style.... and the black and white photos.
