Used in a church Bible study.Great study with different women teachers and 5 different books.

Not my most favorite Bible study I've ever done. While it's a good idea to have so many amazing women Bible teachers do a study together, I was a little irritated by the fact that they literally just took studies that have already been done in the past and shoved them into one study book. I had already done over half of the studies in this book before we chose and started the study, so I was already disengaged by that, then they kind of throw you into the middle of each study every week and you spend a little bit of time trying to figure out where you're catching up in the story, and I really didn't like how they never wove the stories together as a whole. If you are a beginner this would be a good study to start with, especially when it comes to studying people of the Old Testament, which can be overwhelming. However, if you are a more seasoned Christian, I would pass on this one.

This Bible Study has been a very engaging one and one of the best ones I have completed. All different types of speakers with different personalities and styles of teaching.

It seemed like a good idea...all these amazing teachers covering some of the greatest Old Testament hero’s.It fell so short when they just grabbed random lessons from these teacher’s studies and threw them all in one book. My Bible study group would watch the videos one week and complete the studies the next. Only problem- the studies come into the hero’s stories midway and then the study ends before we know how the story ends. This book was put together as an afterthought- not a true study of any hero.

However, Ms. Devine has taken a newer, fresher look at the backstory of physician activity taking place while the battles raged , at the formation of a database which was the basis for a comprehensive look at what was and what was not accomplished, forming the basis for later works by newly trained physicians. The Am. civil war was a giant stepping stone towards a better future educational process, towards a more scientific basis for examining disease in the U.S. This was a much needed viewpoint. I commend her on the exhaustive research, the dedication to original previously untouched materials, and the formulation of this most positive view of what otherwise was a seemingly senseless loss of lives.

I found this book on the Civil War to be an incredible resource. I actually lived up the street from the Vicary House, in Freedom, Pennsylvania. Every year they put up a Civil War scene in this beautiful house from that time period, and they always put up all the medical implements that were used back then. They also showed the embalming that was done to send boys home to the families. It was all kind of morbid. We think of medicine not really moving until the 20th century, but the amount of information in this book, with the incredible research done by this author demonstrates how much really was learned during the Civil War, and how this knowledge changed medicine in the United States. It really changed my previous opinion of how backward the medicine was. I was always of the opinion that the doctors did so much amputation to save time, but it actually saved lives because when they didn't amputate immediately, it allowed promotion of various bacteria, including ones that caused gangrene.This book was fascinating to me, but it isn't an easy read. Lots and lots of research went into this...and some of it repetitive. I didn't mind that so much, because of the emphasis, but I'm sure some readers might have a problem with this. I kind of wonder if this started out as a Ph.D. thesis...but whatever it was, it was a great read for someone interested in the history of medicine, or the history of the Civil War.

Interesting book that pulls you in even if you do not have a medical background. All though it uses many technical terms from medicine, overall it is very understandable and readable.

Very informative! Readers will gain a tremendous appreciation for the giant leap medical knowledge took during and after the Civil War. You'll be amazed at obstacles they overcame. If you purchase this book, however, be prepared to either look up medical terms or just glean what you can. Written with some technical jargon.

I have not finished this as yet. However, it is a knowledgeable and well-written story of the advances in medicine brought about by the Civil War. It does give much attention to Dr. Hammond who was exceptional but, from my perspective, neglects Letterman, the head of medicine of the Army of the Potomac and the advances he made against diseases and how he brought about the Ambulance Corps.

This is a fascinating and deep exploration and study of Civil War medicine- one for which many students of American medicine have been waiting a very long time. Previously, only by visiting the fabulous museum in Frederick can one obtain a feel for what it was really like. Here, in this work, lies the birth not only of Emergency Medicine, but also the nascent beginnings of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), with all which that entails- triage, in-field treatment, transport and emergent intervention. That it reads like a novel is a marvelous bonus. This work is for the serious student of Civil War history, and it is a magnificent addition to the study of the history of American medicine.Robert C. I have always been interested in physics, history (especially WWI and WWII) and especially science history. I have read a great deal about many of the events and characters covered by Michael Joseloff in this short book.. But I had not, until reading Chasing Heisenberg, formed a complete, succinct picture of the origin of nuclear power, the development of the atomic bomb and how it all fitted together. Especially the race between the US and the Nazis. Nor did I appreciate, or even know about, how close were the relationships between many of the famous (even legendary) characters involved. I cannot think of a better way to do this than read Chasing Heisenberg. Only a short read, but very comprehensive and well written. Highly recommended.

I’m an unapologetic WWII buff and lost count of the number of books I’ve purchased and read about that era many years ago. Perforce most go over the same ground, and few offer any new information—after all, these events happened more than 70 years ago. But I found new information (at least to me) in Mike Joseloff’s book, despite have read several much more weighty tomes on the origins of the atomic bomb. The story of the personal connections between the principal scientists and the “race that was over before it began” is told from a fresh perspective that I found fascinating.

I know Mike Joseloff as a talented television producer who cares deeply about getting it right, paying attention to detail, and telling a story well, so I probably should not have been surprised to find "Chasing Heisenberg" a gripping, well-told tale. What surprised me was how much he made me--not a WWII buff--care about this story. It's a well-written page-turner....

Michael Joseloff is a talented writer and TV producer. What has always distinguished his work is the tremendous amount of research he does for every project, and how he marries complicated scientific and technical details with a grippingly dramatic story. I remember working with him on a “Biography,” of the two Googe founders, Sergey Grin and Larry Page. “The Google Boys.” which won an Emmy, brought the complicated Google process to life. In “Chasing Heisenberg” Joseloff tackles an even more challenging subject. While mastering and presenting the ground-breaking science and technology behind the bomb, he also vividly captures the scientists caught up in this extraordinary effort that would literally change the world.This is Joseloff’s first book, and I’m pleased to see that his talents as a TV producer lend themselves to book length non-fiction. This is a wonderful achievement, and I look forward to other subjects to which he applies his special talent.

For the most part it was a very good book. It was interesting to see the comparisons between the United States/Allies and Germany in the race for the atomic bomb, and all the different things going on: attempted abductions, sabotage, etc. For me it didn't do a very good job of explaining how some of the technical processes work, although that wasn't really the purpose of the book, it was a bit weak and confusing nevertheless. I would recommend reading it, a short book with some very good information.

Not a first book on the Manhattan project, but interesting and personal account of 4 pioneers. Building the bomb was about fear of antisemitism combined with incredible scientific talent and the enormous physical resources of the WW2 USA. It was about fear that the Germans, lead by Heisenberg, would do it first. There were 100 scientist and most knew each and every one of them as nuclear physics was/is a narrow field. Joseloff picked 4 of them and followed their work and lives during the project.

Interesting angle on the quest to build the bomb.!Still hard to believe that physicists could go from the discovery of the neutron to having a working reactor (and be close to building bombs) in only ten years. Heisenberg didn't have a chance after Hitler chased most of the great atomic scientists out of the axis territories!

This quite accurate description of events leading to the development of the atomic bomb, brings in Heisenberg into the picture he doesn’t really fit in. It turned out not to be a competition who will be first, but who is or was clever enough to think about it. Could have been better written and more interesting.

I've read a lot of outdoor adventure books and this is a great one. A nice switch from the "I climbed a mountain and almost died" type book (which I love.) As another reviewer said, I would have loved more photos. But the read was first rate. The feeling it gave me of being so far from civilization was excellent.

Adventure and conservation in one of the worlds most legendary places. There are not that many places left to explore in our world and this story is about exploring one of the last places. Highly recommended!
