This is one of those rare books that one finds by someone "on the ground" who writes accurately as well as entertainingly. A story of road building through one of the most interesting "remote areas " of the region, building on both history as well as the culture, but especially the incredible feat of putting in a vital road, still in use today and using only local labor. For those of us (Westerners) who have lived there, it is difficult to find writers who resurrect our emotions so vividly of the people and cultural interrelationships as this Scottish road builder. It is a gem.

the print size is too small. I won't be reading it (not unless I want to bring on sore eyes, the need for glasses, and a headache). If I'd known the print was this small I wouldn't have bought it. Sadly to return it will cost, and so is not an option.

A highly readable and fascinating insight into the road and the lands across which it was cut. The narrative is very easy to read and portrays a vivid picture of what it was like for a British administration official (he was a New Zealander) to have to work in Iraq, and be transferred to Kurdistan and how he had to "cut his way" through tribal societies to ensure he got the job done. Having myself traversed a good part of the Hamilton Road in 2015, I can attest to the beauty (in Spring especially) and the front cover is a typical mountain scene...It is really not difficult to imagine as you wind your way from Erbil on the hotter lower plains, albeit above much of even hotter Iraq, through the roaring mountains in the west and lazy goat-herds still dotting the hillsides, that nothing much has actually changed since the book was written. Certainly a few holiday towns like Shaklawa have risen into more scattered concrete houses dotting the hillsides but beyond this the lands sweep into beautiful vistas cut across by rivers and boulder strewn mountainsides. Also it passes near ancient Neanderthal cave territories of "Shanidar Man". What a feat to cut the road at a time when motorcars had not been seen there! It is an entertaining read (there are a few black and white photos in my Indian reprinted copy found in Erbil Souk) and with the typical dry humour that one might expect.

"Those rocks had stood there since before the birth of the first Kurdishman, would they not stay yet another thousand years? 'The ... engineer is just a little mad,' they said, 'but otherwise harmless; let him alone and see what happens.'" - the opinion of the local tribesmen on Hamilton's labors to build his road"I looked and was satisfied that all was as it should be, and signaled to the men that it was done. And up from the depths of the canyon there arose the exultant roar of men's voices that reached almost to the mountain-tops." - Hamilton's recollection of the moment when the Rowanduz River Gorge was successfully bridgedAfter the First World War, the League of Nations assigned the subject territories and overseas colonies of the vanquished nations to the governmental administration of the victors. Such lands were known as "mandates." Mesopotamia (Iraq), formerly a province of the Ottoman Empire, was given to the United Kingdom as a Class A Mandate, and the U.K. administered the area from 1920 to 1932, when Iraq itself became a member of the League. In 1927, New Zealand-born and trained civil engineer, Archibald Milne Hamilton, was sent to Mesopotamia as part of the Public Works Department. Soon after his arrival, he was given sole responsibility for completion of the Arbil-Rowanduz road through the mountains of Kurdistan, an area heretofore inaccessible by motor transport and barely so by animal caravan. The most daunting obstacle to the road's completion was the dramatically rugged Rowanduz River Gorge, through which the paved highway needed to be constructed. It took Hamilton four years to do it, but it was ultimately a miracle of contemporary engineering.ROAD THROUGH KURDISTAN is Hamilton's personal account of the project's undertaking and achievement.Written in the matter-of-fact, detailed, markedly lucid (and always engaging) style that one might expect from a trained engineer, Hamilton's narrative is of a job well-done with a multinational workforce drawn from historically antagonistic factions and amidst terribly difficult terrain and always-dodgy tribal support. Occasionally - and all too infrequently by my mind - the author displays a dry wit, as when he describes the process of calculating his workmen's pay:"I sat in my little tent, and computed the amounts due to each man according to his attendance and his rate of pay, while scorpions and large brown beetles clinging to the sides of the tent took stock of my columns of figures."Though arguments can and will rage over the benefits, or lack thereof, of imperialism in general to the lands and societies of the ruled, there can be little argument, I think, that Hamilton and his road represents British imperialism at its finest. The King could never have stood prouder than after the service of this fair-minded, generous, and extremely capable servant of the Empire. Honor is due.ROAD THROUGH KURDISTAN contains thirty-three photographs and two maps. And, for those so interested, the author's observations about the Kurdish people will perhaps serve as the beginning of an appreciation for the nature, strength, and resilience of their independent spirit which has proved so problematic for their neighbors - the Iraqis, Iranians and Turks - who even today would wish to bring them to heel, but can't.

The book "Road Through Kurdistan" is a fascinating first hand account of A.M. Hamilton, a civil engineer from New Zealand, who built roads in the mountainous Kurdish area of Iraq along the border with Iran. He provides a detailed description of the Iraqi and Kurdish peoples who he worked with in building the roads through incredibly steep and treacherous terrain. It was a formidable effort. I read a first edition (1928) of "Road Through Kurdistan" belonging to a Swedish geotechnical engineer who designed and built two dams in the 1950's for the Iraqi government in essentially the same region. One dam was located at Bekhme on the Greater Zab River north of Arbil and west of Rowanduz, very close to Mr. Hamilton's road. The other dam was at Derbendikhan on a tributary of the Tigris River, northeast of Baghdad. To pass his spare time in Iraq, my Swedish friend, Svante Hjertberg, read A.M. Hamilton's book with delight. Now I had the same joy reading the book and sharing Svante's experiences in Iraq. The fact is, Svante could have written the book himself because he had so many similar experiences, working and traveling in Kurdistan, as Mr. Hamilton. When Saddam Hussein came to power and began killing his enemies, the U.S. engineering companies working for the government of Iraq were forced to pull out. The book contains unique photographs and maps and is a great read for anyone wishing to learn about the terrain and peoples of Kurdistan and the issues of constructing public works facilities in remote, inhospitable countries using indigenous people.

We just received this book in the mail, the morning of its official release, thanks to Amazon pre-order. The kids were thrilled! Boys and girls ages 4-12 gathered around and poured over the picture and stories together, and then took turns reading it individually.Since they are big fans of Hatke's Zita series (see Zita the Spacegirl (Zita the Spacegirl Series)), the kids are excited to read all of his graphic novels. As a mom, I love that the pictures and stories draw the kids into books and inspire them to read.I asked the children what they thought of the book:"I really liked it. The setting (bridge and river and mountains) reminded me of my town. There's not many words, but I really enjoyed it." -- boy, 12"I really like it too, even though it's probably more for younger kids. The pictures were fun." -- girl, 11"A girl finds a robot but he wants to play with other robots like him. So he leaves her...I like the robot that fixes stuff. He fixes up all the other robos. I think it's silly... I like silly." -- boy, 8"The bridge looks like Virginia's bridge." -- boy, 5"Yeah, I like it. I like everything. It's about a girl and a robot." -- boy, 4

The best Hatke for beginners, story telling on par with the Owly and Wormy series, but with Hatke's ability to turn serious without turning scary and explore some harder themes. Great for teaching social-emotional awareness, perspective, bravery, loss, and sacrifice, but with light enough of an ending that you're still sending your kid to bed happy. Good as a read along a few times before you start letting them go on their own. One of the building blocks of the Hatke universe, that does a lot of world building that establishes where MIghty Jack's earth is, and how magic and technology interact.

"It makes me happy. I want to read it EVERY day." -Honor, age 4.A very cute story of a little girl and a robot. Very few words, so after a few times through, my daughter can "read" it by herself. The story is told mostly through pictures, and follows both the girl and the robot over the course of their friendship. A lot of emotions are packed in, so it opens up a lot of discussion about facial expressions and what they mean: "He looks angry" or "She looks sad." I'd highly recommend it for the preschool / early elementary set who are figuring out all those emotions and expressions.

This was our single book purchase of the year after reading over a thousand books this year (my son is 3.5 and he loves reading it all by himself). It's got an ethnically diverse female lead into STEM without making it into a big thing. It's just dramatic enough to really get my 3.5 year old on his toes, and it's sweet and adorable and just wonderful. It's gone viral in our books for littles book group. Hatke's other book, Julia's House for Lost Creatures is also amazing. This author is the bees knees.

As I expect from the author, the story is simplistic but well executed, the characters are simplistic bu endearing, and the art is superb. The details in the background and expressions of the various characters and environment carry the whole book. It is a pleasure to look at and study each page, even though the story is mostly predictable.

The age group Amazon recommends seems wrong to me. It's basically a picture driven story that even pre-readers can get into easily. Having the book out I have seen a few 2-3 year olds pick it up on their own and turn the pages. When my 2-3 year old has asked me to read it the sparse dialog makes it an odd book to read to a child in your lap, but it's fun. It's a super cute story that I think any child can get into, early readers too. I picked the book with my older first grader in mind.

There are very few words in this book, so it's fun making up the story to go along with the pictures. I've read it twice to my 3 year old now, and she sits still for the entire book. That's unheard of for her (she is more into imaginative play)! It's a special story with beautiful, imaginative illustrations. (Comic book/graphic novel style).

My daughter loves this book. The illustrations are beautiful and they are what makes the book great. My child loves this book. I thought that there would be more text to go with the story (for that I took away one star). All around, it's an enjoyable story with thoughtful, lovely pictures.

The Four Books of Architecture (Dover Architecture)

From the Back Cover

Andrea Palladio (1508–1580) was one of the most celebrated architects of the Renaissance, so important that the term Palladian has been applied to a particular style of architecture that adheres to classical concepts. The wide spread of Palladianism was due partly to the private and public buildings he constructed in Italy, the designs of which were copied throughout Europe. But of even greater consequence was his remarkable magnum opus, "I Quattro Libri dell'Architettura"; translated into every major Western European language in the two centuries following its publication in 1570, it has been one of the most influential books in the history of architecture. The Four Books of Architecture offers a compendium of Palladio's art and of the ancient Roman structures that inspired him. The First Book is devoted to building materials and techniques and the five orders of architecture: Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and Composite. Palladio indicates the characteristic features of each order and supplies illustrations of various architectural details. The Second Book deals with private houses and mansions, almost all of Palladio's own design. Shown and described are many of his villas in and near Venice and Vicenza (including the famous Villa Capra, or "The Rotunda," the Thiene Palace, and the Valmarana Palace). Each plate gives a front view drawing of the building and the general floor plan. The Third Book is concerned with streets, bridges, piazzas, and basilicas, most of which are of ancient Roman origin. In the Fourth Book, Palladio reproduces the designs of a number of ancient Roman temples. Plates 51 to 60 are plans and architectural sketches of the Pantheon. In all, the text is illustrated by over 200 magnificently engraved plates, showing edifices, either of Palladio's own design or reconstructed (in these drawings) by him from classical ruins and contemporary accounts. All the original plates are reproduced in this new single-volume edition in full size and in clear, sharp detail. This is a republication of the Isaac Ware English edition of 1738. Faithful and accurate in the translation and in its reproduction of the exquisite original engravings, it has long been a rare, sought-after work. This edition makes The Four Books available for the first time in more than 200 years to the English-speaking public.

#341,578 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book belongs in all of the architecture libraries of the world. It is a book that is a classic, a "must have" for all the professionals in the field. It requires a bit of concentration to read, because it is written in an "old fashioned" way, where some of the letters look a bit odd for the modern eyes ( the letters "s" in a lot of the words look like an "f", which reminds you of the german "ß"). But other than that, I think it is a wonderful book, carefully illustrated. I gave one as a gift for an architect friend, and he has been enjoying it a lot.

This book is a MUST for every interested mind to understanding the basics and logic to why construction and design is, what it is! Today construction throws logic out the door and is based off of money ... short term return. This book along with Vitruvius's book, Ten Books on Architecture, will be the corner stone of a new chapter in construction and design. Designers, Builders and politicians (who should not be in the mix of decision makers) all talk the talk of "Green", proving to be a farce in many ways. Simple concepts explained and set in these two books prove more "Green" than anything brought up today in this world based off of fade and fashion.Just make it simple, get these two books into your reading schedule and learn what was forgotten. The thought process becomes clear once taken the time to just sit down and READ!!!Michael in Charlotte, NC(previously of FL, previously of NV, previously of CA, previously of DC, previously of PA)

Wanted to a little about the classical architectural standards and got a whole lot more. Also has some strange characters, but you!ll figure it out

This edition is in a large format so all the figures in the drawings are legible

Great book that includes many of Palladio's hand drawings! An essential collector's item for all architecture fans!

This book is apparently a print- out of the original which Palladio produced. I understand that Palladio was one of Thomas Jefferson's favorite architects.

The historic British translation is an interesting one if you can get past the curious habit of using an "f" as an "s". I found the drawings of ancient structures to be worth at least as much as the 5 orders presented by Palladio.

My architect son-in-law loved this gift.

A great investment book for beginner. I purchased it for my wife. She always thinks she is not smart enough when come to numbers, math, and investing. Hope this book will change her point of view on investing.

Thank you for a great purchase. I bought this as a gift for a special lady in my life and she loves it.

This book recaps a lot of what is in Rich Dad, Poor Dad, but from a woman's perspective. It also has a lot of good suggestions as to where/how to begin, which is very helpful for someone like me who suffers from analysis paralysis!

Inspiring! Informative! I loved this book so much I bought one for my daughters.

Good read. Good to have a woman's view of the topic.

I found this book to better written than 'Rich Dad Poor Dad', perhaps because since then Kim and Robert have had more time at investing, and writing books of course. This book is titled to catch the interest of women, thats why I bought it for my wife but investing information has no bias or gender preferance. I don't agree with the 'Bad Boy, Nice Guy, Whimp' men stereo type thing, which were made to be an analogy to men. If they only new what some bad boys do....!!However a good source of information and really a good start for anyone who is interested in changing their life.

Like the advice given in Rich Dad but from a woman's perspective.
